CARJACKERS find it so lucrative that they are willing to resort to violence and put their lives on the line.
The two latest cases revealed that these people can be very dangerous.
On Thursday, a luxury vehicle theft syndicate known to have stolen at least 30 cars in less than four months was smashed with the arrest of four people in Sunway, Petaling Jaya.
But this was not before three of them rammed the car they were in into a mobile police patrol unit several times at Jalan PJS 10/11 in a bid to escape on Monday night.
But police managed to arrest them after firing warning shots.
And yesterday, a carjacker was gunned down when he tried to shoot his way out of a police dragnet.
The culprit, identified as Chen Khien Hou, 30, opened fire when he was cornered in Jalan Persiaran Barat in Petaling Jaya at 12.30am.
He was in a Toyota Camry and fired two shots at the pursuing police team, Bernama reported.
The police returned fire killing Chen who had six previous records for drugs and armed robbery.
A .38 revolver, three small containers of “‘syabu” and four car chainlocks were found in Chen’s car.
Selangor CID chief Datuk Hasnan Hassan said police had been monitoring Chen for a few hours following the discovery of stolen vehicles hidden at a condominium in Taman Desa.
Police are tracking down the rest of the syndicate members.

In Monday’s incident, police personnel who seized the carjackers’ car, found a tool box containing a machine to produce keys, 22 fake number plates, 13 road tax stickers, eight car windscreens, a drill and a parang.
“The drill is used to deactivate the alarm system of the targeted vehicles. Several luxury car emblems were also seized from the trio,” Petaling Jaya district police chief Asst Comm Arjunaidi Mohamed said.
“Police are checking if the stolen cars were sold to neighbouring countries,” he added.
The syndicate is known as the Camry Moo Gang.
