Hi.

I wish to know how to calculate the cost of electricity for a certain electrical appliances. As an example, how much does it cost operating a table fan for 2 hours etc.

You can assume the normal electrical tariff.

I would appreciate if anybody can teach me on how, what or where to look for the power information for electrical appliances.

General formula would be much appreciated.

The reason I'm asking this is because I want to prove to my brother and sister that electrical energy is expensive.

Thanks icon_rolleyes.gif

if your power supply is 1000 w
it is equal 1 kw per hour
if 500 w it is = 0.5 kw

So power consumption. so you multiply by the number of hours you use.
that is the kW of your consumption.
However... like a fan there is speed 1 2 3.
so you have to make ur assumption at maximum.

erm..

where to see the power supply? i look at the back of my mouse, the only thing there is rating (5V-100mA)..

does the thing got anything to do with the calculations?

why do u look ur mouse doh.gif if u can look at ur PC power supply, normally 200W to 400W
generally almost home electrical appliances has it own power consumption rating measured in Watt, W.
things that generate heat such as rice cooker, water boiler, consump more electricity...
example, ur PC require 250W at its maximum performance and u turn on ur PC for 24hours...
so ur PC power consumption is 250W x 24h = 6000Wh = 6kWh
let assume tariff for 1kWh is rm0.20, 6kWh x 0.20= RM1.20

get a watt meter, like "kill a watt". plug your equipment in and it will measure your consumption, normally the watt fluctuate up and down, just get an average, like 100 watt, then assume that equipment will take 100wh(watt hour) if run for 1 hour, if you are paying RM0.50 per kwh(kilowatt hour) then that piece of equipment will cost you RM0.05 per hour.

its good to measure, cause that is the most accurate, like a monitor say its power draw is 15 watt, u dont know how they measure it, its very different if you set your brightness up and displaying a bright image, compare to almost black. same to air con, freezer, etc, those equipment will take alot of power when their motor is running and will take little when they are cold enough, and they will draw more and more when they are old and inefficient. apply same to your table fan, if you turn your table fan max, it will draw more power compare to minimum speed, also same apply to your PSU inside your CPU, even it label 500watt, most likely u are only using 100watt until u start playing game which your GPU draw alot of power which perhaps drawing up to 300watt, very low change u are drawing 500 watt flat, cause if that happen, most likely your PSU exploded long ago.

A normal fan, you could see at the back of it the max power of it. 55W for example. Same goes for lightbulb, 18w or so on. Just divide with 1000 then times how many hours you using, then times the tariff. This is for AC, your mouse is DC, doesnt count.

For example, a 100W bulb. Used for 100 hours per month

100w/1000*100hours = 10kwh
10kwh * 0.10sen/kwh(tariff) = rm1 per month.

Downloading, will check out and comment. Also maybe you need to tweak your app's search tags on playstore cuz when I use my phone to search "My Electricity Calculator", its number 62 on the list. biggrin.gif

it depends on how much power you use, not the max power rating

A fan which have a rating of 100W, however which may be less consumption if you reduce the speed to 1 or 2

same goes to your aircond and your other stuff
