This is what I don't get. Why Age is important esp. from most employers? I wish the current labor laws in Malaysia or Singapore prohibit employers from even asking Age when hiring like those in other developed western countries.

Sorry for nick pick. You meant you are an outsourcee (aka contract worker), not outsourcing. Correct? biggrin.gif

IMO, being a contracter is nice. You work on your own schedule and as long you deliver your products and make your clients happy, the paycheck will keep coming.

Just wondering, if you're located in Malaysia and work via telecommute, do you have to pay deductations like: EPF, Socso, Taxes?

Nice. But does your employer pay for your socso or epf contribution too?

Do you telecommute or do you make trips to office like most of us? biggrin.gif

Nope :'( but my employer was kind enough to spare usd$50 every month as a saving scheme.

i only telecommute smile.gif i can jump out of bed and start work. lol.

working like me can get lonely since you dont have a social working environment but its more flexible.
*
That's good. In today world, there are lot of people who dealt with technology work and earn their living online. IMO. that's the job of the future. The only thing you've to do is to make plans for your own personal savings for future retirement and health care. biggrin.gif

Do be a bit careful with the external/overseas income. The Malaysian inland revenue doesn't like it because they still want to tax individuals who don't work for Malaysians firms esp. you reside in Malaysia. The archaic 1967 tax laws have no means to tax income derived from legit online sources (such as performing web development or tech support or consulting) over a certain limit. Occassionaly, they do scour individual bank accounts for suspicious activities (such as money laudering) and issue audit letters. I 'kena' once but have to provide proof that I don't earn income from Malaysia but already paying some taxes overseas on my earned income to get away. I don't know what kind of arrangement you have with your oversea employer but do think about this when they start knocking on your door. wink.gif

Note: i hope i am not pointing fingers at anyone nor am i ranting, but whoever said private sector jobs are more lucrative than govt sector is dead wrong. of course i am talking about corruption. go to any district and you would see what i mean. the more remote the district is, the better. another thing is, top mgmt at state level salary (all-in) peaks at RM15K-20K per month but they are also appointed as directors of GLCs and things like that.
*
I am not sure if this is considered healthy way to promote the public sector.

Working for the govt and expect corruption to boost income? While it may be true in some cases but is this really good to continue?

Honestly, is this what you (and we all) want to tell our kids?

Malaysia will be continued to be perceived as corrupted third world nation... sad.gif

But after I stayed 6 months in Penang, I really will say that the cost of living in KL is extremely high smile.gif

Not many in IT management (eg. supervisor, manager, director) here either.
Wondering what's the avg salary like for those in the technical decision-making
and personnel mgmt focus area.

Don't drool. That salary means nothing if you're not-productive.
This manager has zero experience before joining and this is the kind of job he's doing?
If I am the owner, I will fire him immediately. This will happen the moment if there's any downturn in profits.

Say, what kind of professional level job can earn RM120K+/year (or RM10K/month)
in Malaysia?

Self-employed or business ownership doesn't count. Anybody?

Get into the oil/gas industry. Try to get offshore work. Within 5-7yrs or less if competent. You'll hit around RM20K -RM 35K.
That comes to what?....RM 240+ annualy?
*
Interesting. It seems that MNC or IT or Oil/Gas are the ones that pay more..

How about local doctors (physicians), lawyers, dentists, physical therapists or local universities professors or researchers? They don't make much?

Only 4 yrs exp and can make RM12k/month? This is rare..

Which area of IT?
- Consulting
- System Development & Programming
- System Administration
- Networking and Telecommunications
- Tech Support

When you said contract-based, does that mean it is not usually not a permanent job, has no benefits, (holidays, etc).

my fist post.
at the begining of this tread, some one talking about you can only make big bucks by "jump".

well, i am jumping now, illegal, i am now 21 years old, i jumped to england since last year october.

job title : take away counter
company:chinese take away
tenure: full time, no contract.
duration of working: everyday, no off day, work 7 hours a day
experiance when joining: no experiance
job description: taking order
salary: £240 per week. its like RM6000++ per month if converted to rm, food and accomodation included.
not too bad for 21 years old eh?

actually i am a advance diploma holder in hotel management in taylor's college in P.J. but considering the low paid in malaysia, i have decided to jump, and now i regret taking the course.

if I know earlieri would take hair dressing course and work as hair dresser here in the morning and do the take away job at night, that would sum up to rm 10000++ per month if converted.

any one jumped here
*
You poor sod.

I met quite a few Malaysian's wetbacks too in NewYork and Toronto China Town area. They have work like a dog (16-20 hours/day, 7 days/week). I guess they're earning pretty good money (US25k~US30k/year - mostly cash ~ tax free) but have no life and can't practically leave Chinatown area - always hiding from Immigration or Labor dept raids and have to share bedroom with 5 other illegals, very difficult restaurants/sweatshop life. Good luck to you.

f1 meteor, you know it, theres nothing much that we can do here, other than chinese restaurant, if you got any skills than that different story, like hair dressing, or what so ever. well, if you father can arrange a job as well as apply working permitt for you why dont take the chance?i am envy of you got father working legally here, my mom work here too, but illegal also. she had to come here to work and pay for my college fees. after i have grad how long I have to work to earn that back? thats why i decided to jump, work for 3 to 5 years, earn wnough money than go back invest the money or do my own business. i dont like working for people, i dont like receive order, i like giving order lol.

Life as illegal is quite challenging indeed! As long you're making honest living..But, sadly you have to go this route. Please do, try to pay their taxes...at least give some back to their govt, the natives won't complain too much about immigrants siphoning off their resources, and if there's ever an amnesty, you have better chances of getting legal status.

I read a story of a Malaysian black cab driver can earn up to 8000 pounds/month in London. Not sure if he's legal or illegal.. but he's a immigrant in UK - working extremely hard, saving every penny and can possibly retire early (if return to Malaysia, of course!)

with RM30k++/mth. i can even sleep at the company's toilet for 12 mths.

Perhaps not in toilets in Malaysia, you know how bad they can be... :-)

Some Japs companies have sleep in bunkers or sleepracks for staff who stays in office.
It is more like a 2nd home for them...slave to company..

Japan has same about standard of living like in UK, US or Aust.
Cost of living is very expensive..

I said..RM30K gross is about avg paid for highly experienced tech and comparing Japan to other Western countries, but you don't to have work those long hours.

It will probably take the same tech working in Malaysia 10 years or more to earn equivalent wages in Japan.

FYI. According to an ex-co-worker of mine from Japan for a short term assignment in US, he prefers to work in US than in Japan because he said although Japanese works very hard, but they don't have a smart system like the Americans do. Americans work less, and produces about the same quality of work. I thought that's interesting coming from a native Japanese like him who felt the American systems are better.

Oh well. anybody can be a papercert tech these days.

Try asking your candidates "what if" scenarios and see how they respond.
