Hmm..I'm new here and the whole reason I registered was because of this topic. I need some advice from the experts here.

Education level: Associate's Degree in Retail Marketing and Merchandising, Bachelor's Degree in Marketing, CGPA 4.00/4.00

Location: Currently based in New York

Work Exp: 1 year with MNC in related field
Retail experience (6 months) and
2 internships (3 months each)
Total = 2 years working experience

I am wondering if it would be unreasonable to ask for a salary of rm3200 from a MNC (preferably Fashion or FMCG industry) if I return to KL with these qualifications, considering that the salary here would be USD3k+

I don't know about salaries since I'm not in that line, but I would suggest spending more time working in New York. Some people may not consider internships as actual work so you have only about one year of working experience which isn't a whole lot. Work experience in one of the fashion cities of the world is far more relevant and useful. Why are you in such a hurry to come back to Malaysia?

Thanks for replying smile.gif

First of all, I am confident that I would be able to justify my internships as valid job experience because I'm able to provide a portfolio of my projects, certified copy of my job description, as well as letters of recommendation from my employers.

Coming back to KL is more of a backup plan for me because I am allowed 1 year's employment in US upon graduation and I have to go back unless a company is willing to sponsor my work visa, which I've heard is getting harder these days. You always need to have a plan B wink.gif

Lol thanks all for replying.

I will keep your advice in mind about scheduling interviews, reveur. And by the way, that's why I'm targeting huge MNCs within the Forbes / Fortune 500 list that have locations in Malaysia, cos I know they can afford to pay wink.gif biggrin.gif

P/S: I'm a she smile.gif

Lol, I have no idea. I don't want to come across as being a poser, like just because I have some work experience in NYC I think I'm all that and that I'm sooo much better than everyone else. Get what I mean? I guess sometimes you have to be realistic...

As far as I know, fresh grads in KL are lucky if they get paid RM2k and above. I'm not sure about annual increments, but is there such a possibility that 2 years working experience can get you to RM3200? If yes then I'll definitely consider asking for more biggrin.gif

when we r looking for a job, don't always look at how high is the offer but how potential is the prospect . earning big bucks fr US or SG is nothing to shout about , but how far can u go with the job is more important. working for big / Top500 company will give u a platform as a start but the ladders to climb is higher n more steps to take, along the way there are lots of rules, regulations n protocols to follow, which makes u a good follower. to start with a small company might not give u a good foundation but a good stage to grow urself independently as many of time u r required to do one-leg-kicking task , green light is easier to obtain as access for plan approval is closer and faster, exposures are different....

Lol...I guess it depends on a person's priorities in life. For a person returning from the US, culture shock at the office (longer hours, less pay) is definitely a big issue to deal with. So a higher salary would make things more...ahem...comfortable? rolleyes.gif

ohh... i thought i saw an F1 visa student.. biggrin.gif
i wonder which part of new york is that person in.. i do missed that place

Added on July 11, 2007, 4:03 pmi doubt that person can save much money with just us$3k++ pay in new york.. federal tax, state tax, sales tax and crazy rentals.. it's zip before you have anything for yourself sad.gif
*
That would be me. I'm working in Manhattan, living in Queens. Rental's not a big problem cos I share, and I'm a really teensy eater so living expenses is cheap for me. Around $100 on groceries a month blush.gif

Federal tax and state tax, well that's expected everywhere. Sales tax ain't bad either cos clothing below $100 is tax free whistling.gif And there's such a thing as clothing allowance and employee discounts thumbup.gif

guys please follow this format, Age and Location is very important.

Just an opinion, I've always thought of it to be rather unfair to judge a person's abilities by their age. I say age shouldn't be a determining factor, but rather their achievements and experience. Oh, and I absolutely hate it when in classified ads they put "Chinese Female only" or "Malay only". Urgh, those people should be shot!
