creepy : The A850 has the same IQ as the A900. It's basically the A900 with the following differences :

- 3fps instead of 5fps
- 98% viewfinder instead of 100%

All other specs are identical. Twin Bionz and all... thus noise control also same.

The FF offer a narrower DOF compared to APS-C. Sometimes I feel like the lens have back focus at brighter apertures but it may very well be a case of me not used to the thinner DOF as I have tested and some shots came out ok and some seems like OOF.
*
i tot the noise control are tweaked by Dx0?? i mean, from the link provided somewhere pages before, they said the Dx0 manage last minute tweaked the A850 for Sony??

correct me if i am not accurate.

this problem doesnt apply to Alpha only, it applies to almost ALL portable mass storage devices. well, when u click cancel, can u still open the drive from mycomputer? i have this problem time to time, from psp to mp3player (i think once on my camera, with old 4gb card)... i just click cancel, dont format, double click the drive again, walaaa, it opens.

without the crop factor...using a FF..u need to go closer(compare to using APSC) to get the exact same framing..so when u r closer to ur subject..DoF = shallower...just like when u focus very very close using macro..altho the F only 2.8..but the DoF is extremely thin..

correct me if im wrong =)
accurate! if u move back, and frame it with a imaginary crop of 1.5, (meaning u shot wider composition) ur DOF will be the same.

haha just did a small test on a550...

first impression when i hold it,
i like the size and the weight compared to the A2XX and A3XX series...this fits much better....

summary

like:
- the size
- the weight
- the noise control seems pretty impressive on sony! Need to further verify on pc!!! I tried up to iso3200 (i saw sample from iso1600, very nice, but 3200 were noisy like A300's 800iso)
- AF seems faster or isit my imagination....
- the 50mm 1.8 MFD
- typical sony colors  flex.gif I used "standard"(not vivid) FYI smile.gif

Dislike:
- no dedicated top LCD (do we really need it? did u notice the info In The OVF???)
- small VF and slightly dark (sh*T? really VS A300? wouldnt that make it more crappy?????)
- no dedicated rear dial (no comment)
- pic doesnt seems that sharp until ~f/2.8 (sharpness of the picture is depending on lens. i opt users to grab a CZ hahahahah)
- i dont like the style of the menu, reminds me of A230/A330 smile.gif...though good for beginners.... (have u tested the liveview, change the view mode? i saw somewhere they have a 'live bar show the live change of Apperture and shutterspeed when set in P-mode, and u can switch it to more standard look then the noobmode)
- couldnt locate the 7fps sad.gif... (it's in the 5fps, u press rightleft button to access it i think)

all in all, the iso performance is really a step higher than the previous sony models that I have tried.....
*
have u tested the localAF? can u change the AF point with Dpad or have to access the menu like A330?!?!?!

u can change the AF on-the-fly like A200/A300 , thank god smile.gif..
top LCD is really useful...at least for me....faster and easier control....

the curve smile.gif

oh, a550 body color is pretty funky too smile.gif>..
*
THANK GOD... hahaha.

well, why arent the lcd infront of u less useful? i mean, all u have to do is, move ur head backwards, u see all info on the lcd, rather then tilt ur head backward and turn ur camera 90degree (or lower it) to see the lcdpanel... that make u unable to ANTICIPANT good shot for event, candid, tracks. tongue.gif seriously, think bout it. summore our sony battery life span is long. tongue.gif just my 2 cent, maybe people just love the lcdpanel on top. biggrin.gif

hehe....try it then u will understand...

besides, the front lcd is hard to view under sunlight..

with top lcd, i can change almost any settings on the go without accesing the menu, i can just press and scroll.
i can change
1) drive
2) wb
3) af
4) pic quality (fine, medium ....
5) iso
6) exposure
7) flash settings....

etc etc etc etc etc etc
*
mmm, true... but sony approach is using the Fn, so it will has less dedicate button like others

for purchase like camera body, i prefer getting from sony retail's. pay using maybankcards for 12 month installment,(sonycard can go up to 24 months!!!!and additional +1year extended warranty!!!!)

but watchout, some retailer sells demo units, as sony dont provide demo unit, they themself have to open one unit out for user to molest molest...

for lens, i get from supplier, *unfilled warranty + a little cheaper(not as cheap as KL), no catch.

*edit:typo

guys.. talking bout flash right.

how to do fill in flash to avoid shadow @ eyes in the afternoon with big hot sun right above of the subject?

i've tried with 50mm f1.8 iso 100, external flash attached. flash on auto mode, with diffusal. but i tend to get overexposed pics... what should i do if i want to remain the bokeh with fill up flash? manually stop down the flash power @ the flash?

pls pls share share
*
bro, u need to read up and experiment with exposure.

1. F1.8 is too wide open for board day light! use F8 if directly under the sun, unless u are under a shade/roof, then F1.8 might do (but i advise F2.8) ur shutter speed cant compasate the over exposure at the max speed (1/2000, or 1/4000)

2. flash is auto mode, when they detect u have too much sunlight from the WHOLE picture, the flash will fire at minimum powweerrr, so u need to do some read up and play around with manual flash biggrin.gif

3. with diffusal.... =.= WRONGGGGG. it totally use for indoor to stop ugly shadow, and when u uses iso400 and above. but u can use iso400 at boarddaylight! biggrin.gif

4. how to get bokeh but not over expose, for wide open lenses like F1.4-F2.8 for daylight shooting, ur shutter cant move faster then 1/2000 for entry level, or even for mid level, 1/4000 might not be fast enough! what u need is a +2 ND filter to cut down the light going into ur lens! (but warning! ur flash might not be strong enough to light up after using ND filter!)

ermmm. i think my advise arent really giving the direct answer, but all ur setting is wrong sad.gif

*edit: ahhh i got advise already!, use P-Mode! snap snap snap, review > see the setting the camera choose to use (F number, ShutterSpeed)... learn to think Why the camera AI choose to use those setting, the AI will choose the best setting to apply to the best exposure)

might need to check the metering too??
perhaps he was using spot with the subject near the center....i would try to use matrix with flash under day light..
*
yup, but the problem is, F1.8 at direct sunlight is too wide, unless u have 1/16000 shutter speed, then the metering sure can balance tongue.gif or iso50(super lo)

*edit: actually, A700, with 1/4000ss, F2.8 can work with no problem under direct sunlight (i think)

every brand has an entrance level camera thats good enough for beginner...and every brand has their own high end cameras which satisfy every pro(i guess when u r a pro..u shd not be biased)..so i don see y sony is specially good for beginners while C n N is better when u move on to FF..
agreed. infact, alphabeta, u are looking backward, u never know what sony next step will be.... they do have the leading HD Camcorder tech, masssive funding, hunting for graphic-software company to buy out and harvest thier tech... etc and they own a huge R&D sensor factory that made sensor for both sony and nikons. they are rich. drool.gif

i've read photographyblog review about the a330, it is not as good as a300 in term of handling & feel. as for a550 is still very new & the price is not gonna be lot cheaper than the obsolete a300.  hmm.gif
my main consideration is i'm a beginner & a300 already given what i need anti shake, anti dust & live view + most of all a more affordable price for me to learn b4 climbing up the ladder.  biggrin.gif

hopefully i will join this Orange legion very soon & by that time i'll definitely be more active in this thread for more guidance from all sifus here.  notworthy.gif

mind you, a lot of concept of photography is forgotten, due to they love comfort.

yes, A330 not as comfortable(handling or feel) IF u are picky, i find it just nice.

but to let u be clear.
1. ISO on A330 is better then A300. output is important
2. A330 new shutter design helps SSS to preform better, quieter, software, and longer lifespan.
3. A330 bigger OVF help u compose better. A300 is smallest in DSLR history. composition is important
4. A330 better informative LCD info help learning easier, faster. A300 doesnt hav.
5. A330 better DRO then A300 output is important

bad thing bout A330?
1. grip, seriously, if u say u are new to camera, and not very picky, i dont see the grip is any problem, as they Dont Make Your Photo Nicer.
2. Manual/custom WB being remove. i believe, 70% of lyn A300 user still dont use it. so... will you?
3. mmm, i can go all day long, but non of these i going to mention will affect the result or output quality of the photo.

@albnok..i like the bokeh produced by the STF...thx for the explaination.
yea up to each person... U may use photoshop to lower down the noise or get a better FF with a price of course. woah..i have not even been to anywhere outside malaysia except australia. Shooting under snow isnt my problem to worry too. But i really would like to shoot under heavy rains...i missed out few opportunities to shoot some events due to heavy rain! Im sure a700 onwards are able to shoot under rain..but im not going to risk it..coz they are no strong prove or ppl tried to shoot under heavy rain and claimed tht it has no problem.

wireless for the win! all DSLR grips are good for me except 1000d,d40,d60 and Pentax...gosh i hate pentax the most..
