since this is a dog section , ill just ask something ... i have a typical mongrel dog , i feed him well with quality pet shop food , i even once fed him with fish based dog food but my dog's hair wont stop dropping . any ideas ? i went to the vet b4 and that doc told me its his growing up stages , sure drop , but after 7-8 months , my dog's hair still keep droping although there is no sign of baldness on him .
*
b4 i bought my miniature schnauzer, i did some research on the net. some dogs shed more than others. dogs like pugs (even tho they have very short fur) shed quite a bit.

miniature schnauzers and poodles are some of the breeds with minimal or less shedding. perhaps your dog belongs to a category that sheds more

Hi, since your dog is a mongrel it's quite hard to know whether its parents are from shedding breeds or not. Most dogs do shed though, some more than others. If from what you said your dog's body shows no sign of baldness and he's healthy and active, he's probably just shedding smile.gif If you are concerned about his coat, you could give him some supplements for the body and coat. There are quite a few good oil/paste supplements for coat. I used to give Scottie a brand called 'MyBeau'...but now I give him human grade salmon/fish body oil. You could try that too smile.gif Hope this helps a little!

u can check out the above link.

but as "rayne" said, it is difficult to ascertain if your dog is from a breed that sheds more fur

sorry for bugging in your house of schnauzers ;(

so shedding is normal for some breeds huh , btw my dog is 1 year old , when i first got him i can still put him inside my house and play with him but now eventhou he's outside , i can still see his fur in my house sometimes ...

fyi , i used frontline spray on him before , does this have anything to do with it ?

that so called oil and paste supplements , are they avaliable in pet stores ?
*
long long ago , i used to have a spitz.

it was kept outside the house. even then i could find balls and balls of dog fur inside the house ...........

the schnauzer is so different. it does not shed that much (in fact almost NIL) whenever i brush the dog

Max is hyper. When I bring him out for a walk, he will pull me like a siberian husky pulling a sled. Tat was until I couldnt tahan. I was also worried tat he will choke or suffer some neck injury. So I gave him hard smack on his backside. He has since toned down and when he tries to make a dash n pull the leash I will raise my hand and say "back, back" . So far so good except for occasional outbursts when he goes crazy n pull me all around

use harnesh rather thn collar. . .
*
I read somewhere that it is better to use a collar as opposed to a harness. I cant seem to locate the article.

but he is better now after being "smacked". whenever he pulls now, i will clear my throat and he will either sit down or stop pulling. wit max , one cannot use the soft approach . he is just too stubborn n rebellious.

dunno if i can ask this or not. How do you all normally clean pet bed?? Cause mine is starting to stink real bad.
*
max does not have a bed . however i soak his rug, towel n soft toys (esp his favourite stinking koala bear) in a strong solution of germisep. i almost pengsan when i washed his stuff that was soaked in breeze the other day. it was only better after i changed the water and put in a germisep tablet. i find germisep pretty useful as i can use it to mop the floor, spray the cage/pee tray etc

http://www.germisep.com/hovid-faq.php

a solution of bicarbonate of soda will also remove the smell but germisep (being chlorine based) has antiseptic properties.

but i dont know if hiro's bed can be soaked !!! furthermore, germisep, being chlorine based, has bleaching effects

Actually the white MS i have seen and like are pure white , like a Westie !!! i kind of like that but pretty pricey

Friend has a salt and pepper. Over the years , it has turned greyish white !!!!! the fur has strands of darker grey fur interspersed in between the white fur.

it looks like the hair of a man who is turning white but not fully white yet

Max is around 5 months old. On and off , he will lift up his leg when he pees on th epee tray. This means the pee will end up on the floor. Is there any way to train n stop him from doing that ?

Actually thinkin of getting him neutered but that will have to wait until he is 6 mths old which actrually coincides with CNY. That means I can only do it after CNY. I just called the vet the last Saturday and he does not recommend neutering a puppy earlier than 6 mths of age

from what i read a good time to do it would be around 6 months . i was thinkin of doing it earlier as max has started to hike up his legs whenever he pees. i am afraid he will "mark" the house

Marking is very natural, especially in male dogs. Although neutering might help, it may not necessarily eliminate the dog's need to mark as I've heard of neutered male dogs still marking smile.gif Scottie is 2+ years old now, and yes he does mark, but outside the house. Sometimes, he forgets and will mark some corners, but I have 'adjusted' to it by giving him a stern warning whenever I see him sniff around wanting to mark. He won't mark after my warning. Another thing is that I always try to block him from marking our rooms by not allowing him to enter the rooms. He is mostly confined to the kitchen, living room and the outside patio. Sometimes he goes into my room to sleep too, but he knows not to mark there, or he gets a good spanking from me. I guess from the many times of spanking and warning, he seems to get the idea that the house is not for marking. This doesn't apply for other people's house though...only my house. Which is why I let him wear a 'loin cloth' thingy when I go for gatherings at people's houses, so if he DOES mark, it's in control. laugh.gif

It's up to you to decide when to neuter...I have read also that it is more feasible to neuter after the dog has reached maturity, as removing the hormones inside the testicles will cause the dog to be sort of underdeveloped. You'll be surprised at how important sexual hormones are for growth (even for humans), so I'd think of both sides first before going for the snip wink.gif

thanks audrey

i was also told by my vet that neuterin doesnt provide any assurance that max will not hike up his leg or mark

hi , this is normal for a male dog. As long as a male puppy that never exposed to other male dog that do marking. He wont learn how to pee with one leg lifted.

Added on January 13, 2010, 6:18 pm

that is wat i was told ..... but i dont think max is exposed to seeing any male dogs peeing with leg lifted up ???

It depends I guess...Scottie and Kenji loves oranges smile.gif I've even tried giving bits of lemon to Scottie to test if he will eat it...he did sweat.gif

For me, I don't really use preventatives like frontline and all. Most of the time, when I shower Scottie every week and whenever I remember, I will check his body for ticks. Sometimes there will be a few...I'm not so concerned about that. I will just take them out and for the next 2 days or so I will check his body for any recurrent ones. If there are - let's say - about 10 or more of ticks around, and after rechecking there are still quite a lot, I use bayticol to rinse Scottie after his shower. Then, check his body quite frequently as well until I see no signs of live ticks.

There will be tick seasons throughout the year...if I'm not mistaken, there will be one in July/August and another one in November/December. These times I check for ticks very regularly. Right now, Scottie doesn't have any ticks and I just monitor...whenever I touch his skin I make sure to feel for any irregular bumps. These 'bumps' usually are ticks.

Max is on Frontline Spot On . Kind of pricey . Is there anything cheap and effective ? How about one of those collars ?
