I am planning to get a second hand car currently...
I am interested in two car by now... One is toyota vios and another one is nissan sentra...
Many of my fren suggest me to own vios... But the sit behind the vios a bit small if compare to sentra...
I like sentra one style... Very cool if own it and drive it...
But jz scare nissan sentra a lot of problem after I buy second hand one...
And I heard than sentra 1.6 are quite high fuel... Anyone own nissan sentra can let me know bout this?? thx!!

The price between this two car are almost same...I have budget around 50K...
can own 2004/5 one Vios or Sentra... Jz wondering which I wan to buy...
Wil Nissan Sentra lot prob if second hand?? Wil Nissan Sentra high fuel???
Izit worth to buy Vios?? Low fuel if drive Vios??
Can anybody choose for me?? Or giv me the good point to choose better car... Thanks lot!!!

You guys better stop worshipping the Dugong, aka The VIOS.

Between a SENTRA and a VIOS, get a SENTRA, get the 1.8L version and enjoy a better ride, better power than VIOS, and of course, bigger car than VIOS.

The 1.8L version, yes, somewhat proven have better FC than the 1.6L.
Just like their Cefiro 3.0L has better FC than the 2.0L.

Dude. Before you "follow the blind mouse which leads the blind mouse" and generalize about Sentra.......

If you think VIOS maintenance is lower than Nissan, You are still wrong. Both of them have low maintenance.
When I read this, I was thinking "WTF? Someone thinks that owning a Nissan is like maintaining a BMW?"

In fact the Nissan Sentra has already gained the reputation of proven reliability from the legendary Nissan Sunny to the Sentra B13 (genting taxi version), to even commercial Nissan Vanettes, which actually still uses legendary DATSUN 120Y engines.

Did u also know, that Nissan Sunny was once before, an official, national taxi, before the selfish G/Proton made it vanish and replaced it with Saga/Iswara and now Saga BLM? Did you know also, that Genting taxi are still running up and down in Genting, and they are ALOT older than the new Sentra N16. So what does that tell you about Nissan's reliability?

Also, Google up/search up before you generalize, doh.gif
If u are interested in the 1.8 version search for year 2003. Slightly less than RM 50K. Year 2004, RM 55K.
Go and search yourself in Motortrader.

I tell you la, the best is to get yourself a VIVA brows.gif . Lowest fuel consumption, lowest maitenance. Even VIOS can't match VIVA's fuel economy. But that's what you aim for, right? But that's what you don't want (a small car), I'm sure.

Of course Vios lah.No need to think also

Sentra super old technology.

Vios is brand new tech.

Some say Sentra 1.8 more powerful and all.

Wait till you actually sit inside Sentra and actually feel it.It is not powerful at all because it has a very frugal engine.BEsides I think TS is talking about the 1.6 version which is even crappier.

And seriously Sentra interior is worse than Vios ..

Not that I am worshipping Vios or what, but it is a fact that Vios is so much better than Sentra.

its very subjective for this topic i think..
but TS who's the one will buy, so just for TS try list down all the advantages n disadvantages for both car n decide by urself... u the one will buy n use it everyday, so u know the best what u need (eg spacious, fuel economy, less maintenance, powerful for overtaking, ect)
for maintenance try ask mechanics which know better, what their normal prob for both car etc...
n everyone got different opinion, that's make the world keep spinning around bro.. peace.. biggrin.gif

When i was in jakarta, i always goes to work using taxis. In indonesia, they use sentra and vios as their taxis.

I found out sentra is more spacious compare with vios. It can fit 3 adults or sometime 4 adults at the rear seat but in vios 3 adult is just nice.

In sentra it is more silent and more luxury if compare to vios.
As the result we always ask for sentra rather than vios.

If the money with me, i will goes for sentra based on the experience i have with sentra in indonesia.

all second hand car risk to have problem.. there are several types of ppl who sell their car eg:
1. people who upgrading to new car and trade in their good conditioned old car
2. people who think current car gives too much problem and sell it (normally contis due to high cost of maintenence)
3. people who is short of money and have to sell his/her car urgently without repairing the fault (and hiding it)

best if u can get car from the 1st case.. but mostly people sell their car due to 2nd and 3rd case whistling.gif
even if u get vios which is said to be problem free, it might not so for second hand car.. anyway, vios is 1 of the worst toyota ever.. fact!
juz my thought

hmmm well i personally believe the engine itself wont give u much problem as its 1 reliable engine, old school tech maaa tongue.gif lol
but still good luck in searching 2nd car lorrr, wont always be so unlucky and got a car which gives so many problem right?

Actually where did you guys get those information Sentra is having old tech and Vios is ultra super high tech? What is the technology Vios has and make you guys think it is more technology advance than Sentra? VVT-i? If you think about this VVT-i is ultra super duper high tech, then please google it first. For me, if you travel around town more often, then Vios is enough already, but if you travel long distance more often, then no need to think, Sentra is the better choice.

TS were mentioned about year 2004/2005 Toyota Vios, I never heard of that generation of Vios is so called "Dugong" look. It's no point to bash Toyota Vios here, TS just ask for some information but those jerky comment.

Most second hand Sentra, I've seen seems to have better interiors vs Vios. Don't know if its quality are better or all the previous owners take very good care of them. laugh.gif
Yup Sentra 1.6 feels more spacious. Don't know about the FC cos my nephew don't bother tracking. sweat.gif Anyway it is already in its year 3. So far maintenance no major issue or problem.
If you buying new then I would pick Vios but if second hand, Sentra with low mileage would be a better choice.

If I might add, between VIOS and LATIO (new), I'll go for LATIO
Because I like their wooden interior trimming, it's 1.6L and doesn't have that dull looking interior in the Dugong and at least I am away from the "too common" VIOS. VIOS is fast becoming the next common "Proton Wira" on the road.

Price also starts from RM84,680.00 for manual version or RM88,980.00 onwards for the Auto version.

Okay, seriously, TS, go and check out the Sentra rather than listening to others bashing about Sentra "old la" and VIOS "latest technology, safe fuel la..etc". Follow your heart.

Hey Guys,

Something to share, I did ask the mechanic about choice between Nissan car and Toyota and Honda

Mechanic always recommended Toyota, main reason is simply it can get spare part (OEM) compare to Nissan, so maintenance cost is lower compare to Nissan and resell value is better as well. you always need to get genuine part of Nissan car.Honda always got problem on gear box after few year later...

I have test drive both, Compare to Sentra, Dugong Vios is spacious and more comfortable but driving experience not that good compare to Sentra ...i would like to give myself a chance to try on Latio Sedan, i believe it will be good however outlook of Latio pretty similar to New Proton Saga...not sure you guy agree with me smile.gif

I believe 2nd Latio can't get around RM55k, do we have chance to get that ? i looking for 2nd car as well ...else will opt to pick Vios as it is cheapest among the all new car with same rank ..may be end of this year or next yr ...no money yet sad.gif

yes true, most toyota (especially vius and mypasso) workshipper dont know what is the feeling to have the real good car.. all they care is the badge on the car.. toyota keep recycling old tech on new facelift/generation car is ok coz it is good but if other manufacture, they said the manufacture outdated lah, kiam sap lah, old tech lah doh.gif

that's because the mechanic don't know shit about nissan (same with one of my mechanics who always recommend nissan over toyota).......with a 2nd hand car like the sentra, we always look for potong parts which are way.........cheaper whistling.gif than the overpriced stupid OEM toyota parts (i'm using a toyota also, so don't say i'm a toyota basher). Bought a Vios??? crashed your car? need parts? don't bother to look in potong shops.....because there aren't any there....buy new......buy OEM....with a "price"......muahahaha! brows.gif

Latio's interior looks too cheap, as is with the stupid Vios......older cars have better quality........looks and feels nicer too, no idea why, maybe because older cars "used to" be more expensive cars

And my friends and i have driven Nissan for such a long time, they have made very reliable engines, no matter how we rev it, torture it, rape it and it just won't die

I'm not saying that toyota doesn't make reliable engines, just not as reliable as nissan's, i've blown a couple of them, all toyotas and they r all standard engines, not modified at all, u can't drive a toyota like u drive a nissan, they aren't bulletproof (nissan is)

hi Stormlcc,

I agreed with you nowaday new Car are mostly overprice and not worth for money in the sense that you pay more with less material quality ...i guess every manufacturer trying to cut cost ..too bad to hear that ..

for the case of spare part, i trying to highlight variety OEM parts for Toyota have more choices than Nissan...of caused it is another choice for potong parts, but availability will mostly depend on your luck ..wish you can recommend good potong part shop if you are in KL ..so we can get an alternative in future

By the way, are you taking current Nissan Sentra model ? any chance to compare the Petrol consumption with Dugong VIOS ?

To all whom replied, please comment based on just d N16 Sentra n NCP42 Vios (not dugong please coz its on a different chasis).

As for machanics sayin so-and-so maker is better, it may not always b d case coz of different experiences, know-hows, training, spare-part supplier contacts etc. If u study even deeper, some spare parts supplier even claim tat certain models r rubbish while others swear tat its d opposite.

For those who say whichever model cost a bomb to repair or reliability issues, please state proof/example or at least provide a figure. Otherwise it holds no water.

I'm speaking of tis coz I hv been to spare part shops n mechanics n hv been doin some level of self maintenence for my own n some relatives rides since my schooling days. Further more, some negative claims r merely for bashing.

My comment on d N16 Sentra n NCP42 Vios as follows r based on my hands on drivin n some maintenence on both.

Sentra
+ space (interior n boot)
+ averagely higher quality materials used than Vios (knock on d dashboard n door panels test)
+ ride on d firm side but still more comfortable than Vios
+ timing chain
- higher fc due to weight n mismatched engine to chasis, but acceptable for 1.6cc range
- vague steering

Vios
+ compact as in better parking n more suited for 4 adults max
+ better get-up-n-go due to power to weight ratio
+ better fc due to frugal engine n weight
+ better steering feedback than Sentra
- engine too noisy at highway speeds (similarly to Avanza, Rush which uses d same engine design n layout Xcept block material)
- less stable at 100kmh+ speeds n may sway at crosswinds in stock form
- lower material quality than Sentra (note that Vios was designed as a budget car to undercut Altis/Sentra category in d 1st place)
- rear head room (I'm 175 n still dun like d rear seats)

Others/Conclusion
Maintenence/Service availability n cost r generally almost d same n most mechanics should not hv any prob due to their simple designs n layouts.

Key deciding points:
Vios for fc n city driving
Sentra for comfort n long distance driving

Vios is better for fuel economy n power & less problem even after 5 yr now ...

LOL..not really...quite the same as sentra..as i drive sentra (latest version, 4 years old) full tank goes to the same as vios (my mum 1, not dugong though) and the mileage can goes to the same as well..
i drove manual 1.6 with 17" rim, FC is about 0.14-0.15 cent/km in cities drive.
and sentra probably has less pick up compare to vios due to the heavy weight body..

for my self opinion i prefer more stable and safety 1st car..so i choose sentra...
i tried b4 driving 180km/h for both car (vios at kesas highway, on the way to KLIA and sentra at north south highway goin to penang) at 120km/h vios is less stable edy...like flying which the tyres has less grip..and at 180km/h it will go straight when u start conerning..it was like no grip at all..but for sentra at 160km/h still stable and at 180km/h starting to feel like 120km/h vios..

for maintainence issue, i could says that nissan is more expensive and most of the parts is from APM which locally made.

as i search for the dugong version review last few months, many of them says there's problem with the sound coming out from the front compartment which toyota service centre also couldnt do anything bout it or didnt do anything bout it...
and then again..toyota service centre bcome more and more lousy...

cheers.

- timing belt

Others/Conclusion
Maintenence/Service availability n cost r generally almost d same n most mechanics should not hv any prob due to their simple designs n layouts.

Key deciding points:
Vios for fc n city driving
Sentra for comfort n long distance driving
*
Are you sure ?

Get your facts right. Vios 1NZ-FE is using timing chain. How do I know ? because I own one.

the method is to include auto volume adjustment for sound system, meaning that the faster u go, the louder ur audio would be rclxms.gif

My dad have a VIOS, and I have my share driving it. My advice, go for Sentra. The engine noise from VIOS makes me feel like the engine will collapse sooner or later. I have sit in a Sentra before, and although the engine noise is comparable with VIOS, the space wise, handling wise is much better than VIOS.

Sentra wins all imo except Vios FC (mayb same or slightly better only). Power wise, both feels the same since Sentra 1.6 and Vios 1.5(considering Vios weights lesser than Sentra)..

i'll go for Sentra anytime, never heard of non reliatbility on Nissans though.

Ya..In my opinion sentra is realy look smart n cool than vios...
I just scare the maintenance lose than vios...
scare buy second hand sentra wil got a lot of problem...such as high fuel...
because non of my fren own nissan sentra... So dono izit comfortable when sit inside...
I sit my collegues vios today...he is new vios G spec... But the sit at behind are quite small lo...
As I knw vios less prob...low fuel only lo...realy scare it is same as MYVI only wo...

Honestly for 2004 models, I think Nissan offers more comfort than Vios. Maintenance wise, I dunno. I think you should get a better bargain on Nissan (in terms of price).

Im not sure slyphy FC but i dun think it only can get so low mileage for a full tank. Dun forget its running on CVTC and 15" rims if not mistaken.

My FD2 - 17"rims - RM 75.00 can go beyond 420km and
N16 (A/T) - 17" rims - RM 70.00 only manage to climb 380km
- both 100% town drive

By right Sylphy consume less petrol than Sentra. And those who is saying Sentra 1.6L FC frenly, I wonder how they drive. My fren driving a manual also cannot get good FC. Bear in mind, Sentra is very heavy with 1.6L engine, of course, the FC is high.

FC is so so only for the 1.6l sentra, full tank of petrol (RM70 - RM75) can get u around 420 - 470km, 60% highway, 40% city...
every weekdays from puchong -> bukit jalil -> klcc during working hours, highway cruise mostly 100 - 120km/h
so i would say its not that bad afterall

Yes, im trying to tell TS dat even FD2 (2.0) with 17" can get above 400km, so i dun think y sylphy with 15" can get less than 380km..

No doubt, my N16 1.6 is with oversize rims biggrin.gif

of course im using Bkt Jalil - LDP - Proton interchange (SA).
Wanna get better FC, dun revs till 3k rpm, u will have a shock also thumbup.gif No doubts, its a ahpek driving style... LOL

mounting... Honda's know of all mounting or bushing will not that last...
if bushing spoiled then make sure u have proper ppl to help u to replace if not... prepare more cash...
Tats y all mechanics said some car is good and some if not... because they see long term maintenance...
but now a days different ppl have different opinions...
so test drive, which ever u think is comfort or up to your expectation then ok lo... smile.gif

True, but for CVT, maintenance is important. I rather have new and quieter car with smooth driving that a old engine, old technology and engine that cry like it's being torture every time i foot the pedal.

for me nissan sentra is a level higher compare with Vios. As we know, bigger car has more FC, same as sentra goes if compare with vios. Don't worry to the slightly higher FC for sentra, sure you will slowly get use of it while u enjoying better driving pleasure compare sentra and vios.

same like u driving a super duple nice FC car, but when u close the door it has "piakkk" sound, meanwhile a affordable FC car but the door shut sound will be "chomp".... hahaaha.. biggrin.gif

for me nissan sentra is a level higher compare with Vios. As we know, bigger car has more FC, same as sentra goes if compare with vios. Don't worry to the slightly higher FC for sentra, sure you will slowly get use of it while u enjoying better driving pleasure compare sentra and vios.

same like u driving a super duple nice FC car, but when u close the door it has "piakkk" sound, meanwhile a affordable FC car but the door shut sound will be "chomp".... hahaaha.. biggrin.gif

I had tried both while vacation on Langkawi & I’ll choose Sentra. Main reason is stability, spacious & comfort.

For buying new Nissan Sentra, currently there is no 1.8L model available. There is only left 1.6L auto & manual to choose which labeled by TCM as Nissan Sentra Sport. I’ll go for manual since 1.6L Auto feel bit underpowered. For manual you can easily reach 180kph & can slowly catch up to 200kph but there is speedometer cut-off so after 190kph it will rebound to 160kph but still going on without any decreasing speed. I don’t know if it can be higher since I still value my life. icon_question.gif
For auto it can reach 165kph & if lucky, you can see it until 180kph & not more than that. So choose wisely. Anyway, it is always good for having Sentra 1.8 Auto if want to choose for 2nd hand & remember 1.8L having more FC than 1.6L Sentra.

Vios in other hand provide better FC on city drive. But in highway run, it still loses to Sentra FC. Since both are not in same class (sub-compact & mid-size), no wonder Vios is better in city drive. If not mistaken, Sentra B16/N16 had rated mid-sized car by EPA same goes for new Honda Civic which is also previously on compact class. Nissan entry-car level (compact) had been occupied by Latio right now.
My FC record for Sentra is full tanks Petronas RON95 45L can go up to 560km for city drive & 670km for highway drive. Fuel warning usually pop-up when reach 450km for city drive & 550km for highway drive. Usually I refill when 500km on city drive & 600km on highway drive only fill 41 litre so it still left 4 litre inside tanks. It is still acceptable for his class. New car always consume more fuel since all the part still tight. Real FC came after 10000km.

Sentra had been long in Nissan market. What irritate me is it dashboard still using same as 2001 when 1st generation PreFL N16 launched in Malaysia. Although the dashboard is nice comparing to new Nissan model & new one had sporty color, I still think Nissan designer is lazy or it is just TCM fault. New Nissan Sentra Sport is currently on it 3rd revision (FL2 N16) although the different is just it facelift & rear lamp design. Also it is still using QG16DE engine same as 2001. Only Latio & Grand Livina got new HR16DE engine which is co-developed with Renault. Another reason for me thinks Nissan is just lazy. But since it is NISMO, their entire engine should be reliable.

Yeah I'm so agree with your view. Pretty much the best comment so far from my point of view, since I'm an owner of Nissan Sentra 1.6 (AT). Plus, I'm working in Langkawi, but the car wasn't bought in Langkawi though;-).

Honestly, if anyone wanna own one (Sentra) or Vios, please stop comparing the FC of both, coz if he concerns too much about FC, so he better finds a Kancil or cars with smaller cc. Vios is a bit better in terms of FC, full stop. For me, so far it's been 2 years owning the car, there are things that bother me about the Sentra, but still it has nice things too. (the car was actually bought in 2005 by my brother, then I continue his monthly payments since May 2007 coz he bought another car)

First off, let me honestly explain those things that bother me, though not too much. Yeah I'm kind of annoyed with its dashboard, it looks good but in fact it's the same with previous version. The dials (speedometer) looks a bit simple too. As far as its engine is concerned, the 1.6 auto feels a bit under-power, especially when you have 4-5 adults in the car. For that reason, I'd rather have the 1.8, but if you normally drive alone or with 1 passenger only, 1.6 should not be a problem. And if anyone prefer better acceleration, Vios should win coz it's lighter and I've seen (in Youtube) a Vios doing 190kmh++ on PLUS highway, whereas my Nissan (auto) could only reach 165kmh & I don't know why (even some Proton cars can reach beyond 180kmh nowadays, come on..this is Nissan Sentra, arghh...:-(). I believe some are saying that Sentra has speed-cut behind its gearbox, but also don't know whether most workshops know how to remove the speed-cut. Another thing is, it's suspensions are just too soft & bouncy, and I've read many complaints on this issue in some forums..which I believe that this bothers most Sentra users. Last but not least, if anyone wants to own a Sentra (1.6 version), please choose the version that has brake-disc on all wheels, not drum brakes at the rear coz at times, I could feel that drum brakes aren't so effective during emergency..I think so coz that's what I experienced. For me, a car with that price should offer brake-discs on every wheel..even all Proton Waja come with that offer as basic equipment.

Now let's talk about nice things about it, that make me believe Sentra is a better choice than a Vios. Like I've mentioned before, my boss owns a Vios & I've driven it a few times. Vios engine is undoubtedly quite loud, but it never feels under-power. Nissan, on the other hand has a very quite engine..really. There are few times where I've almost start the car twice coz if you start the car & leave it for a while (for whatever reason), when you get back into the car you'll feel like the engine is not running at all. Sentra offers better interior & build-quality than the Vios. Sentra has better space too, & looks a bit luxurious at times if equipped with leather-seats. It feels better on long run with satisfactory comfort. People's perceptions also tell that Sentra is better than Vios, & I believe this mostly due to its price & cc (more expensive & offers two variants - 1.6 & 1.8 as opposed to only 1 variant of Vios, which is available in 1.5 only). There are other good things about Sentra & there are nice things about Vios, which I could not explain everything here. Thing is, do more research if you want better & a more accurate comparisons.

p/s: Please note that the above comparisons are only based on experience of a normal driver, not a professional.

Found this on Youtube. The dizziness of N16 speedometer after more than 180kph & more dizziest after top gear reach 5000RPM. Maybe should change to R35 GT-R speedometer. thumbup.gif
user posted image

This is at least around 230kph judging from 2 times speedometer cut off after 180kph limit & tachometer still increasing.

Toyota? Gives you old technology and sell you as new technology.

The Sentra 1.6 are way more comfortable interior & has larger cabin. And that's about it. However it is more floaty than Vios & not as zippy as the smaller Vios & lousier FC.

It is legitimate to consider FC as fuel price will be slowly becoming luxurious item - especially where 1 car is more zippy & also lighter in FC, while the other 'underpowered' & heavier FC; do remember Kancil 660cc doesn't offer the power available in these 1.5L/1.6L and even Kancil doesn't have such good FC as the 1.5L.

The only useless point for FC is when comparing 'powerful' or 'powderful' cars.

I'm not sure how come the engine of Sentra is noisier than a Vios. Honestly at idle, a Vios is a bit louder than a Sentra (coz my boss' car & mine always park side to side, where I could easily notice the difference in their engine sound). The sound while driving is still the same too, Vios is a bit louder, & I mean a bit (noticeably) louder than Sentra 1.6. Still a 1.6 Sentra feels a bit underpower, & you don't feel this in Vios, despite having a quieter engine.

However in Sentra, when you slam your pedal in order to overtake (especially on hills), the engine will become quite loud as its rev goes beyond 5000rpm, where my brother in-law said that it sounds like a turbo (he knows little about cars), but to me it's kind of annoying.

I should agree on that, I mean I was wrong to say that Kancil is the most suitable car if FC becomes quite a big issue. I understand that for potential buyers, information about FC is important, so to look whether the car in overall goes well with our monthly budget. But my advice as a Sentra owner (1.6), the FC is not much of a problem. Kind of reasonable from my point of view, especially if you normally avoid using aircond. I prefer using fresh air during normal cruising coz you can see that it does save fuel reasonably.

Turn-off air-cond & open car window after 80kph is bad for FC since wind will cause drag force making your car heavier.
For me, Sentra 1.6 (AT) performance was quite bad, but Sentra 1.6 (MT) in other hand the best in its class & surely going to leave VIOS TRD Sportivo behind. For stability, I admit Sentra quite floaty when in high speed unless change new sport RIM or adjustable absorber, but it will effect performance. However, Sentra had more kerb weight & width design, thus have better cornering stability than taller design VIOS.

Kancil & Viva 660cc has better FC than any 1.5L car especially VIOS. I had heard ppl said more cc more better FC. However I’m experience different. While VIOS FC average around 14-15km/L, Kancil/Viva 660 average FC has 18.5km/L. I can fill RM50 on Vios for KL-Ipoh, but I just need RM35 KL-Ipoh for Kancil/Viva.
For comparison, Sentra 1.6 (MT) is also around 14km/L. While Sentra 1.6 (AT) around 13km/L.

RM50 means KL to ipoh and come back KL? ya thats normal for a vios which used around 60-70% of full tank.

VVT-I is Toyota terms their variable valve timing. Had been used since 1996 & still same with VVT-i not like VTECH to i-VTECH or VTC to cVTC. Nissan use term VTC especially on Sentra N16 2001 until now. On newer model such as Latio & Grand Livina they got cVTC & X-cVTC for Sylphy. Not to mention VVL & Neo-VVL for Nissan's performance engine. While Honda with their iDSi , VTECH & i-VTECH.

While it term are different, the main goal is same & I don't think there is too much different. At this moment, only Honda's boy can proud with their adding i on VTECH (i-VTECH) although they probably doesn't even know how it work.

Although capacity correlates FC closely, it still widely depends on other factors. Smaller capacity cars will see huge, and I mean HUGE, savings when driving in seriously congested/stop-n-go roads. Otherwise a 1.5L could reach 18.6km/L even constant on 130km/h for 375km stretch. FC measurement varies widely and very dependent on road/traffic condition as well as journey length. And the 'sweet' spots for the performance/FC balance, IMO, seems to hover on 1.5L +/- 0.3L for sedan; and 0.9L +/- 0.2L on k-cars.

That's why I said average driving condition. We don't always go for highway when we decided to buy city car (K-car) do we? Same as most people with VIOS or Honda City. Not to mention 1.5L City iDSi only has 8 Valve so driving in high speed after 3000RPM will consume more fuel than other car.

Lucky for Honda fan since their entire new car had i-VTEC badge to show-off after VTEC including Honda City. While most common Toyota car still had VVT-i. Most common Nissan car already have cVTC badge, Sentra Malaysia still stuck with old VTC badge. Nothing to show-off unlike Sentra US already have cVTC badge. Pity for us.

Average driving condition Vios FC is still far better than Sentra and still better than Kancil 660, not to say the responsiveness is also better.

And regardless of 8 valve or iDSI, driving high speed after 3000RPM definitely consume more fuel. Whether it would be more than other car, depends on which comparables are you talking about?

It wasn’t too far. I had tried VIOS before decided to buy a car, but probably only a few times so it still can be doubt my observation. However, you can always search at Motor Trader forum if not Google for VIOS FC. The most record I see is around 16km/L for 100% highway drive although there is some people claim 17km/L. Not even reach my average Kancil FC; 18.5km/L for 50% town drive & 50% highway.

I also have Sentra 1.6 (MT). The highest FC record I got should be 670km per 45L for 100% highway drive. That make around 14.8km/L. That time my mileage still below 10000km so all part still tight to got real FC. However, there are people at NismoClub forum claim it can reach 700km so around 15km/L. That if you think VIOS FC is far better with only 1.2km per liter comparing to Sentra which is 1.6cc, having more curb weight & different class. Sentra FC still better than Iswara 1.3L (own) & Wira 1.5L (own).

As for City iDSi & 8 valves you also can search at Motor Trader if you still doubt my observation. They got user list for all Honda model’s FC. You’ll find City iDSi highway drive consume more fuel than city drive. That is since we assume most car had better mileage on highway drive especially when talking about 1.5L car with also has 8 Valves & 16 Valves. For comparison you can take Honda City i-VTEC (16 Valves) which is way better FC on highway run if not VIOS (16 Valves). Kancil also can.

After several years using Sentra 1.6 (AT), I decided to trade-in the car & I'd rather go for Sentra 1.8. I still love using Sentra, but somehow I can't get enough satisfaction using 1.6 (AT) for some reasons..like mine doesn't have full disc-brakes (drums at the rear really annoying during emergency, it feels so bad with only front disc-brakes)..another thing is I've been watching Sentra 1.8 so many times already & I think that the interior is also better than my 1.6 (2005)..with dashboard matches its leather seat colour, few wood-like trims, auto-close side mirrors, plus some other nice features.

I've heard that even 1.8 Sentra has better FC than 1.6, I wanna hear your views on this. I even contacted some Sentra 1.8 owners who want to sell their Sentra for that reason.

Nope. Sentra 1.6 (AT) had slightly better FC with 13km/L. Since 1.6 (AT) really feel underpower, going for 1.8 is good decision.

Sentra 1.8 DOHC average FC (50% City, 50% highway) around 12km/L. Comparable with Altis 1.8 DOHC but lose a bit to i-Vtec Civic 1.8 SOHC (12.5km/L).

I know it's a difficult decision to make since both are almost exactly the same car, the only differences between the two 200cc & 10bhp with some additional features in 1.8. I've never driven any 1.8 Sentra before, so I can't really tell how much difference it has in terms of power to the 1.6 version. I learned that 1.6 has about 118bhp while 1.8 has 128bhp. My 1.6 (AT) really feels under-power when a/c is on & when 4-5 adult passengers on board, unless if you drive alone or with 1-2 passengers..only then problem of under-power is not an issue.

As far as FC of both cars is concerned, I think I'm quite okay with my 1.6 & I'm sure 1.8's FC shouldn't be much of a problem to me, unless if it drinks petrol like a 2.5 V6 Naza RIA. biggrin.gif

2.5cc vs 1.8cc? That's huge gap to compare.

Nissan’s rear brake disc you can get cheap as RM400 at half-cut. Also you still can get Auto flip side mirror for Fl1 & Fl2 (N16 2nd & 3rd generation) model at around RM100 price. If you want full set, there is ppl sell it at RM60 at Nismo forum. Just dig it.

For new N16 Sport (1.6L), TCM already include auto flip mirror, dashboard maple wood interior & black sporty color. Leather seat is optional for RM300. I personally don’t like leather seat thus go for tricot in hoping to change to Sporty Recaro seat, but later find regret since don’t have rear seat arm rest. How am I supposed to find Sentra Recaro rear seat? So go for leather seat if available.

Bros my GXE 1.8A 2002 is giving 280km on 37l of fuel.

Which translates to 7.5km / l, full city (subang, BU, ss2)

Can any bros comment on the possible issues? I sent to different ETCM service centers, so far not able to troubleshoot the real problem yet.

I'm pretty sure 7.5km / l is high even for 100% city drive.

really need sifu's help on this, thanks!

Your N16 is pre-FL (1st generation). Also first test VTC on N16, thus it's doesn't very efficient & most N16 GXE owner feel that way too. Even TCM was not dare to put VTC badge on Pre-FL. Not much you can do about it. For performance, you can try to adjust your Sentra Header to 4-2-1 with all the pipe change to same big like Frontier's pipe. So now when engine run over 4000RPM = [VTC ON] The VTC Open you will feel the car like got a Turbo Power make your car more powerful run!! The feel is better then Frontier Engine over 2000RPM Turbo On. Or probable it's only your feeling.

Are you implying that RM 7.5km/l is the best this QG18DE can give?
I think even if it's Pre-FL and whatnot, 7.5km/l is still abit on the high side, don't u think? My family's 15 year ol Merc W124 2,399 cc gets around the same mileage (7km to the liter)!

And AFAIK the 1.8 engines on preFL and FL1 are essentially the same QG18de, how much more fuel-efficient can it be after the FL?

pls enlighten. Thanks!

Who knows what Nissan put on their early QG batch production. Nissan Sunny 130Y around 8km/L considered best at it's time. Early QG18DE should higher than 8km/L. As I said before, many Pre-FL Sentra owner complain about the same things especially VTC functionality inside which is different from QG16DE since QG18DE using N-CVT which is already used by Nissan since 1987. If N-CVT is the cause, we can't do nothing except put a new version ECU's controlled VTC same as FL1 & FL2 or new VTC engine. One of my Pre-FL friends already put SR16VE (VVL) to replace QG16DE (VTC) inside. drool.gif The problem usually happens on Pre-FL model since it is rojak with Nissan Pulsar.

Or you can try send your car to mechanic to tuning Cam head inside the engine matching with fuel save you desire, but it will affect your car acceleration. Since all Sentra are DOHC, tuning should be no problem for most experienced workshop. If you send to TCM they only tuning using computerize. Try going for manual tuning for better result, after all your car warranty already ended after 3 years purchase, so nothing to lose.

A similar car Toyota GL KE70 could get at least 13km/L and you still consider 8km/L best at it's time? Come on.

The highest FC record I got should be 670km per 45L for 100% highway drive. That make around 14.8km/L. That time my mileage still below 10000km so all part still tight to got real FC. However, there are people at NismoClub forum claim it can reach 700km so around 15km/L. That if you think VIOS FC is far better with only 1.2km per liter comparing to Sentra which is 1.6cc

Using 100% highway drive for your Sentra can you get 14.8km/L and using the figure to compared to a FC of non-100% highway drive of Vios - you win!! notworthy.gif
hmm.gif I know where we are getting...

p/s: For all I know with my Vios, 100% highway FC I got 3.8km/L more than your Sentra (not the meager that you dream of 1.2km/L).

Does a Sentra 1.8L second facelift somewhere 2005 to 2006 worth it without much problem with VTC stuff?

Yes. FL1 model should already fully utilize VTC thus TCM already put VTC badge on all their Sentra's. Just remember, Many Altis owner also complain about their FC although it is not too bad for 1.8L. What FC can we really expect for 1.8L?

C'mon. We're not talking about Toyota vs Nissan this time don't we? It make feel really like on Fanboy defense force. We can talk all day long about this, but I won't reply again to you if it's not regarding Vios & Sentra. No more.

Lucky google always siding with me on this one. It not so hard typing Vios FC on Google search button. icon_rolleyes.gif
Probably should add RON95 not V-Power more kilometer = more pricey. hmm.gif nah. No need to.
Also, as a proud VIOS FC owner, you should contribute your FC record here: http://www.oneshift.com/pdb/lcmuserfc.php?pid=1234 & I'm glad there is ppl with higher record than you, but don't forget to visit Sunny (Sentra in Singapore) section too. brows.gif

Dude, i think you need to drive your car go to TC to check your engine, QG18DE fully city drive, or we call it extra urban FC should be around 9-11km/l, not like yours 7.5km/l.

At the moment there is also Toyota Harrier in front if you refer to video closely which is also speeding with Civic. I just came took them all. However I lose for pick-up at first, but after their car already reach max top speed my speed still increasing. My Sentra (MT) might have better top speed, but acceleration a bit loses at a moment. I don’t know if it is because I’m using RON95.

Actually the videos main purpose is to show my Speedometer problem to get advice from Nissan expertise. It is just coincidence there is also Civic 2.0 to test our speeding, so I just put it also. nod.gif

As I said before, Sentra speedometer can only read 180kph, but the car probably can go more than 220kph. You can see after 180kph the speedometer show lower reading although the car’s go faster. Just watch tachometer still increasing although speedometers reduce from 180kph until 60kph. After I slow down the car (watch tachometer decrease) the speedometer try to catch up with actual speed since in can read for 180kph & below. That’s why it quickly goes for 180kph to measure exact 180kph. No nitrous applied here. sweat.gif

Have experience before with older Civic 1.7 Vtec which also had modified piping. Since my habit for shifting gear is around 2500-3000RPM, so can feel the good smokes smell at first & pretty far the smokes continuous untill get overtake by me after reaching top speed limit. laugh.gif Unless their top speed doesn’t reach 200kph & above, the smoke still theirs to smell in long run. What can you really expect for auto vs. manual? hmm.gif

Yeah, your paddle shifter is best, if the MT change to short shifter, the performance will be better than yours best paddle shifter, wanna fair play, go to find what ever car model, both same model with same capacity, one is usng your so call best short shifter and one is using MT with short shifter, see who smell the smoke. p/s: FYI, Savvy 1.2L or MyVi 1.3L could cruise at that speed.

You both right. There is no way that Civic can shift to tab 2 gears lower at that speed (180kph++) unless the driver was stupid enough to smell his car engine smokes afterward at tow truck. The car already at it gears limit. No need to tab 2 gears lower anymore.

However to tab 2 gears lower until 200kph sound impossible as I know older Civic 1.7 best tab 2 gears lower until around 160kph only until engine feel doesn't very good. Care to explain?

When talking about top speed MT vs AT, even Caldina GT 2.0L AT (with turbo) can only reach 180kph while Exora 1.6 MT can go near as 175kph. Not to mention Persona 1.6L MT also can reach 190kph.

The video shows more of a broken speedometer than smoking any car. Unless I've missed something important in there.  rclxub.gif
p/s: FYI, Savvy 1.2L or MyVi 1.3L could cruise at that speed.

Yeap. It’s all about speedometer as I already mention before about my Sentra speedometer can’t read after 180kph. It just happens there is Civic 2.0 i-Vtec also speeding more than 180kph. So I just capture it up. After I installed GPS to measure my real top speed, maybe I’ll try to catch video for smokes purpose especially Civic if got another chances.

P/S: Unfortunately my best top speed with MyVi EZi (AT) can only reach 160kph. But my friend MyVi SXi (MT) can go up to 175kph after very long run. Don't have Savvy to try out.

Hey guys..I need some expert advice here please. My Sentra 1.6 SG (AT) is having an unidentified problem..perhaps anyone of you knows something about this or someone has had experienced the same thing in his Sentra. It's about a weird sound coming from err...I guess its steering wheel. I noticed this problem soon after I sped my car over 140kmh 2 months ago with full passengers inside. It makes the sound like "eeettt...eeettt...eeeetttt..." noticeably from the steering wheel. Ever since then, everytime I speed my car over 130-140kmh, the sound will certainly appear which is so annoying indeed. Normal driving under 130-140kmh is nearly perfect, no sound whatsoever. I've asked a couple of mechanics on this, in which I let one of them to see & listen the sound himself, but to no avail bcoz eventually he just said that the problem I'm having is pretty much unheard of.. I'm so in need of advice so that I can overcome such an annoying problem...

Added on November 30, 2009, 6:47 pmOh by the way, I guess the issue of Sentra 1.6 smoking a Civic i-Vtec 2.0 should have settled even before it begins.. I-Vtec system itself is superior than VTC of Sentra..with higher cc & bhp, & better power-to-weight ratio than Sentra, Civic 2.0 should smoke most Sentra in normal condition. My Sentra was once smoked by a Civic 1.8, expectedly. But from my experience, a 2.0 Civic i-Vtec still loses to a 2.0 C200 Kompressor..

Anyway Nissan has its answer to i-Vtec for sure..SR16 Neo VVL is known to have kicked some i-Vtec's a**...;-)
