I Heart Shoes. Over the years I bought a pretty wide range of shoes from sport sneakers to designer dress shoes. However, I don't think all shoes are really comfortable and stylish at the same time.

These are part of the shoes I owned and worn before.

Tod's Limited Edition Country Mocassino Gommini

user posted image

Comfort Level: 5/10
Tod's shoes are suppose to be stylish and perfect for jet setting exotic holidays. But, while I tried on the pair and worn for a day. It cause serious ache at the end of the day. The design I bought is not water resistant like most of the leather shoes. It will have some water stain on the leather once the shoes get water drops. So, it's quite troublesome sometimes. Especially, while raining, your heart just sank. So, now my 2 weeks old shoes looks quite dirty by now.

Brian Atwood Ontario Boot

user posted image

Comfort Level: 7/10
Brian Atwood is the current creative director for Bally. His own label Brian Atwood is worn by many hollywood celebrity such as Victoria Beckham, Kim Kardarshian and so on. This Ontario Boot is surprisingly very comfortable. Non of a single pair looks the same because of the tie-dye effect on the Suede boot. Hence, you need to take out all the available same size pair to choose the exact pair you love.

Bally Espadrilles

user posted image

Comfort Level: 4/10
Espadrilles is one of the best shoes for traveling. It is light and easy to wear on. However, this pair of lambskin Bally Espadrilles looks really cute but not comfortable to walk at all. The leather hurts the feet and the leather sole is not a walking friendly sole to walk.

Moreschi Lace Up

user posted image

Comfort Level: 4/10
This pair of Moreschi Lace Up is made of 2 different tone of brown leather and looks really stylish on jeans or suit. But, don't expect it to be comfortable. It's leather soles are not walking friendly.

Jil Sander Sandals

user posted image

Comfort Level: 3/10
Jil Sander is the only designer who create the most adorable sandals for every seasons. The looks very stylish but extremely painful. The first day I worn the shoes to school, I can't walk after 1/2 a day. After 7 months wearing it, I still feel very painful. But it's just too stylish.

Zegna Sport Sneaker

user posted image

Comfort Level: 8/10
Zegna Sport Sneaker is very comfortable and understated. Probably the only shoes I could run with it. But, design wise is very simple and not that stunning compare to a designer sneaker.

Puma x Neil Barrett 96 Hours Sneaker

user posted image

Comfort Level: 8/10
96 Hours is a range of Puma sports sneaker design by Neil Barrett. It's the best of both world for comfort and function. But it is less stylish compare to Puma by McQueen range.

Maison Martin Margiela DHL Sneaker

user posted image

Comfort Level: 7/10
The only Maison Martin Margiela Line 22 Sneaker I owned. I bought it purely because it's unique and a DHL design are pretty stunning. It's comfortable for a lambskin designs. The sneaker won't hurt your feet even it's a new pair.

I was doing research on the Edward Green and found these:
(adopted from blog.leffot.com)

"How to store your shoes (in this case, Edward Green)?"

Lovely shoes -I would also suggest that shoe trees be inserted before the shoes are packed for storage. Leaving them in boxes without silica gel is not a good idea in our climate. If the shoes are worn best keep them is a cupboard with ventilation .

EG's usually come with shoe bags which protects the leather from scratches when traveling or when placed in storage.

sweet!!!! nice shoes!

i have a question though.

how do you clean the soles before putting them in the carrier bag? i dont want the dirt and grime to go into the bag and goes around the shoes; damaging the leather and bag itself.

in the past, what i did was to dust the soles, wipe clean, air dry and wrap the soles only with those clear polystrene wraps sold in hardware shops. similar to those sandwich wraps, just not food grade.

works well, but turned out to be a lot of work especially if i am travelling.
*
It depends on the type of sole. With rubber attachments that are now the norm, it's a case of wiping with a slightly damp cloth.

In the case of leather soles, you should not just clean the soles with but treat them with water proofing or leather oil -Try Colonnil Waterstop which is sold at Plal's .

I wouldn't suggest plastic wrappers as fungus might form if the soles are not properly dry. The good carrier bags are usually made of cotton .

Alternatively , you can buy shoe boxes with rear vents from Ikea to store your shoes. They come in a set of 4 .

The ultimate is to custom make a specially design shoe cabinet with camphor wood interior & tempered glass shelfs ( for easy cleaning ) The camphor wood will help eliminate bad smells & keep the fungus at bay . The shops that sell Chinese furniture will be happy to make one for you, PM me if you are interested in having this done.

leather soles in my case.

no, Beau, I am not referring to storing shoes in the house. i was talking about storing these shoes inside the cotton bag and in the suitcase when travelling.

regarding the cabinet to keep shoes in the house, i am thinking of getting 1 made also from teak wood, cant think of any design yet.
i just made 1 box to store my shoe care stuff from teakwood last week....yea yea i know i can easily use an old shoe box..LOL

Your method should suffice. I always pack the shoes at the bottom of the case in order not to crumble my clothes. Shoe bags are a must if one wishes to avoid staining one's clothes.

The box is nice. I have one which I bought at a substantial discount (Euro 20 ) on my travels & would like to have the same replicated in a larger size. It comes with a slanted rest similar to that found at shoe shines to render it easier to polish one's shoes. Not sure if your maker could do something similar.

Which part of Indonesia are you in?

i got it done here in Indonesia. Teak wood is plentiful here. I dont know about Malaysia. Initially i wanted to use Chengal wood, but nobody knows what i was talking about. anyway teak is way more than enough for shoe box or rack, in fact way overkill.

i paid only about USD40 plus to get it made.dirt cheap. it could be even cheaper i dont know.

i know for sure Malaysia would cost me more just to buy the wood.

The interior looks like the high end ones sold at Church's or Berluti -Kudos on creating something nice.

usd40 sounds reasonable. do you have its measurement?
*

[/quote]

Have a look at the box they sell on Bexley's website as guidance on what to replicate.

It's cheap to buy these things in Indonesia. Having it sent out is another ball game. You will find that all the grief, bureaucracy & " costs" will make it slightly cheaper than having it made in Malaysia in the first instance.

thanks beau. i am in south jakarta, apartment's there but i move around quite a lot.

all the wood shops i checked were in Ciputat Raya and Kemang Timur. rows of wood and antique wood shops here. all you need to do is just go into any of the shops and they will make anything for you provided you give them the design and dimensions.

i like the sound of your box with the slanted rest. smile.gif...make get something similar done.

they have a lot of vintage teak furnitures, boxes that i like, but i cant think of any place to put in my apartment. those are not cheap, but considered 'cheap' to us because they are not easily available back home.

the current shoe rack in my apartment is hopeless as it is not 'deep enough to put any of my shoes. Also lack of ventilation.

Added on September 3, 2010, 10:47 amcool stuff Beau. i am quite sure it can be done easily...let me think if i should get another new box done or just to fit onto the existing box.
any additional ideas welcomed.

In your situation , it could mean modifying your existing box to cater for the slanted rest .
I've seen some ready made Indonesian teak shoe cabinets in KL. They either have too much ventilation or none at all. The Chinese Rosewood ones are the best but sold at a very high premium. They ventilation at the rear of the cabinet & small nets to cover the vents to prevent insects from entering .
I'm sure you can get something made in Indonesia with Camphor lining. The problem will come when you want to ship it out as numerous friends have discovered. The 60 year old "Kayu Jati " is the one to get . Any younger & the wood is not sufficiently seasoned.

Good luck & let us know if you manage to modify or create a new shoe box.

Beau, what is Camphor lining?

Added on September 3, 2010, 12:08 pmThe Saphir box was what got me interested in shoe boxes to be honest. Not to mention my shoe care products are always stored in a torn old shoe box and things are all over the place.

However the size of the Saphir box was not practical enough for me, way too small and also price; i think they have bigger versions, but still too msall for me. Maybe they are meant for frequent travellers who likes to polish their shoes during their trips....not me, i am lazy. haha.

Camphor is an aromatic soft wood with a fragrant scent. It helps keep away moths, insects & most importantly prevent fungus. It needs to be unlined & raw in order to be effective. Once the scent or effect goes of ( after 10 years or so ) take some sand paper & lightly sand the wood in order to renew it's effect.

It's similar to cedar which is used for shoe trees.

Go to any Chinese furniture shop when you are next in KL & ask for a Camphor wood chest. The exterior will usually be made of hardwood & Camphor will line it's interior.

BTW if you happen to travel to Bandung check out PT Fortuna Shoe Factory. They make this brand of shoes called "Jalan Sri Wijaya" which look great.

Don't think they are allowed to sell the shoes in Indonesia as all the materials are imported under their manufacturing license. It's getting them to ship to Malaysia or Singapore which would be . The shoes are all handmade, fully good year welted , uses French Calf leather and comes with a beveled waist . Check out the United Arrows website for pictures of the shoes in question.

The factory also OEMs for Boss & Armani for the benefit of our fashion forward friends on line

The Bexley box is a tad on the small side but great if one is living in space constraint circumstances.

The quality of wood is nothing to shout about. Your USD$40 box will probably out last the Bexley one in this climate.

Pupjoint since you're an engineer (pj is an oil & gas term eh?), please draw up the ULTIMATE shoe polish box in Solidworks 3D and let's get it made. I want one.

Teak laundry basket? You're insane!

(I meant that in a nice way of course, please don't flame me. Don't wanna end up being pupjoint roast).
*
We should look at gettting quotes from various sources with different quality wood to cater to different price points.

1. Have Pupjoint put up the specs & dimensions etc
2. Get quotes from various places that specializes in Indonesian Teak ( minimum three quotes )
3. Find out how many forum members would like to participate in a group purchase
4. Negotiate with vendor
5. Share final price , specs & quote on forum
6. Purchase item.

I don't think it is practical to purchase this in Indonesia given the logistical challenges in having it shipped out from there so the next best choice would be the various shops that specialize in Indonesian Teak furniture. Given sufficient demand , they may manufacture a run of this box & forum members can purchase it directly from the outlet.

What do you think?

i was at Harvey Nichols today and I dint see those shoes. i will look again.

the black shoes are at Louis Vuitton.

i went to a few wood shops today, found one that specialises in imported Chinese and Tibetian furnitures. very nice prices. i cant afford anything there. i saw a 90 years old walnut chest from China with champfor lining, price was USD2.2K. still thinking what can i do with a chest like that.

saw a shoe rack that is close to what i need, minor changes required (vent holes, front door desigh and vintage front brass lock) , made from recycled teak ( old) USD300. not bad.  but i need to find a space to put it.

spoke to a few wood shop guys, learnt a thing or 2 about how to look at new or old teak and what to go for, terms used.

saw a shoe cabinet i really liked inside Grande Indonesia, but salesgirl dint allow me to take any pics. ....$%^&...not for sale also.

Tailors - I found one, supposingly to be good, Laxmi Tailors, but i had no time to check them out in detail.

Honestly, right now i dont need any DB, or suit, just some good pants, khakis and long sleeve shirts.  still reading up on these slowly. may get a DB made later one when i am done familiar with those.

sorry, no time to do any drawings for now. i really dont know anything about engineering drawings.
*
Laxmi's supposed to be one of the older tailors in Jakarta. Do share your experiences with us on the tailoring thread should you decide to try them.
