It's definitely a con.

One advise, if you want to open an account, it's better for you to bring any supporting documents, like offer letter (for salary purposes) or anything that makes sense. Opening a bank account nowadays is not as easy as walk in and open. The officer will ask a lot of questions. If you bring enough documents, that will convince them.

Same case when I opened my account in HSBC, brought my offer letter and the officer didn't even ask extra questions.

Yep, and the newly introduced account, HSBC Amanah Advance also will enforce RM10 monthly maintenance fee if TRB is below RM20,000.
