need help on overclocking my amd athlon 64 x2 5200+

newbie here.

jus bought a new cpu cooler today.

confuse with the multiplier and fsb.

whether to maintain fsb increase fsb or....*confuse*
*
Increase the FSB (or HTT, or Bus Speed in CPU-Z). The 5200+ is multiplier locked (upward that is) which mean to overclock you need to up the FSB frequency

I just bought from lowyat a 955 BE C3 stepping after been browsing around, the price is RM535. I still wonder whether I should use the stock cooler or Arctic Freezer 64 Pro

If you want a better temp result, better use Arctic Freezer 64 Pro! Good luck then! laugh.gif

I'm not overclocking it just yet, I just ned to find where did I put my MX-2 thermal paste sweat.gif

EDIT: Found it, it boots and works biggrin.gif Looks like even Crosshair II have some sort of downcore control, maybe it can unlock the X2 or X3 model, I dont know. There is a few setting I still don't know like CPU-NB. Gotta read the first page info before starting to overclock

I bought mine at PC-Zone

EDIT: WTH?? CPU-Z detect my CPU speed at only 800MHz, all the CNQ and C1E is disabled in BIOS. very weird. Other program reported the correct speed

EDIT2: After running k10stats and set the speed manually, it worked fine

cpu-z version?
*
Latest one 1.53. After running k10stats and set it manually it worked fine

Runs at 3.4GHz 1.35V currently, I don't know what are the stock Vcore for this CPU, or any other Voltage to be exact

i think should around that default 1.30-1.35v..
*
Maybe, on AMD site they only put a range of Vcore from 0.85V to 1.4V. I wanted to run at lower Vcore since my PSU gets pretty hot at 1.35V but its stable as a rock nontheless, its as hot as I get my X2 3800+ F3 at 3.3GHz 1.5V but of course much faster. I buy this CPU just for GTAIV. And its worth every cent biggrin.gif

The BIOS is nuts, I don't know whether I need to reinstall Windows, but I never ever heard I need to reinstall Windows after changing CPU.

No matter what I set in BIOS it won't stick, the CPU speed only run at 800MHz, and everything slows down as a result. Although k10stat can fix that, I would like to set things in BIOS

I have done that, and from ASUS Club forum, I see someone with my problem. Damn! But there are new BIOS 2302, gonna try that *finger crossed*

EDIT: The new 2302 BIOS did fixed it, I'm happy again biggrin.gif But I wonder why its not in the official BIOS release?

Yeah thank God that it have a fix. It seems it stuck at C1E status all the time with 2202 BIOS, but its fixed on 2302. I just started to overclock it a little, my k10stat and SuperPI testing got me 3.8GHz 1.4V, but I just aiming to run NB speed at CPU speed to recude cache latency and increase cache hit

u mean the IMC? at cpu speed? 3.8ghz? this is madness...
*
No, I don't try at that speed yet, I just leave it at 2GHz and seeking for max CPU speed tongue.gif

EDIT: With 1.35V at BIOS I can reach 3.6GHz currently

EDIT2: 3.6GHz stable at 1.3V, 3.8GHz stable at 1.4V, both with NB at 2.8GHz

The link is broken

My 955 can reach 4GHz after been fed with 1.45V, I don't do much test because wanted to get some sleep but at least can run SuperPI 1M

Wuuu! care to do some stress test on it dude? Really wanna see the best of C3 version! drool.gif
*
I worried at its temperature, even at idle its at 50-52C sweat.gif Its going to reach its max 62C temperature if I stress test

Currently testing 4GHz with 206x19.5 to maximize memory speed which runs at 1100MHz. I got SuperPi 1M time of 17.032sec, I don't know how good is that

Urmmm...u need a better cooling solution i think! Try to use push pull config,it might help! nod.gif
*
Yes that's a good idea actually, I wanted to put two 120mm fan on the heatsink (stock is only 92mm) in pull push config but I need two identical fan, I have two but one of them are low CFM and the other is the total opposite, I don't know to put which one to pull or push. Phenom is still a new game for me, I gonna learn it bit by bit tongue.gif

I wonder do you guys/girls use ganged or unganged mode? Currently I use ganged mode. I read about it but does anyone here have tested them personally?

i'm not surprise if that's happens on asus board.. they are crap in 'memory management'.. lol
*
You just nitpicking, my ASUS board plays just fine in ganged or unganged mode. This forum is biased when it comes to choosing hardware brand/make because of certain people have a little history with them doh.gif

As for beast921, have you tried updating the BIOS? Download it here. I've browsed around in ASUS forum but I can't find anyone who have your board that have similar problem.

For anyone who wonder how does it perform in synthetic benchmarks, here is Everest Unganged vs Ganged

user posted image

There are two memory controller in Phenom (II). Ganged mode basically acts like one big 128-bit bus by combining this two controller but the downside is each core have to 'queue' to access them, the Unganged mode is better because it acts as two individual 64-bit and each core are free to utilise them. That is in theory, in synthetic benchmark like Everest it would prefer the big 128-bit memory controller than two individual 64-bit ones

Agree with you kunta bro! Otherwise we wont discussed in here bout those ahsus thiggy! rolleyes.gif

Just because some of us have it doesn't mean the whole series is bad. You got the best MSI board for example and don't have problems, does it mean the cheaper board are the same? I have use some asus board I have zero issues with any memory incompatibility. But I do have memory incompatibility with DFI board before, but will that makes me bashing DFI board and say all their board suck?

Best thing to do in beast921 case is e-mail them, their customer support are quite good, they will usually reply e-mail in 1-2 days

Just let it flip, it doesn't need to uphold any specific brands or model maa....I used Asus, DFI, Abit, MSI, Gigabyte (ol 939 days), Biostar and have found some pro and cons of each of them....its how your reply regarding the problems that matters, and not to simply say that A board is suck or the B board is good...its a matter of the whole board specific construction and a little bit of luck also....

The current 790FX when I first bought it, out of the box POST'ed once then never again...change 1 to 1 then only I'm running... Just let it slide... nod.gif
*
Exactly. What I'm trying to say is instead of say certain board brand have certain issue, its better for us to diagnose the problem like what you did smile.gif

Good run xixo! I still playing with this new Phenom and some BIOS related to Phenom setting. But from what I've set, its only a few of second off from your time

You have an advantage, because i'm using only 1gb x 2.. wink.gif
Come post your result smile.gif

I see what you did there, using single core. I have tried it, it actually adds up few seconds, IMO its best to use two cores and set affinity to one core.

I have found several other setting in the BIOS that could potentially reduce the PI time, I'm running one right now, will post the result when its done smile.gif

EDIT: Here it is, my best time so far

Nicely done bro! fast fast feed us with the secret weapon! drool.gif awesome NB bro! brows.gif

There is one BIOS setting, named 'CPU Tweak'. With that setting enabled I could get the same time as I did that one, but with full Windows services and Windows themes running. The NB could run at 3GHz but weirdly it won't run it today, I could get it run last night and get a good low latency and high bandwidth from Everest. Maybe tomorrow. I even tried 400x9 but I didn't check the PI time, just test for stability and it failed. Maybe tomorrow
