In the evening of September 20, Gunma prefectural police recovered the body that had been found at the base of a cliff face on Mount Arafune. The body has been formally identified by family as Yoshito Usui, author of popular series "Crayon Shin-chan" who had been missing since the 11th.
It is understood that Usui-san (51) was heading towards the mountain to go climbing and contact could not be made to him by family. On September 20, police recovered his body by helicopter. It arrived at Shimonita before 4:00pm. An inquest was held by police after his family confirmed that the body was that of Usui-san. Police are currently investigating the circumstances surrounding Usui-san's death.

Actually, I've thought the direction the comic took after the late 1990s wasn't to mah taste. The pre-baby books were still more down to earth than the ones after.
The popular Japanese manga artist of “Crayon Shin-chan,” Yoshito Usui, was found dead in the mountains of Gunma prefecture after apparently falling to his death off a cliff. Usui had reportedly gone missing on the 11th of the month after telling his family he was going for a day-hike in the mountains.
The body of 51 year old Yoshito Usui was discovered by a hiker yesterday, September 19th (JST), at the bottom of one of the steep cliffs of Mt. Arafune, about 90 miles northwest of Tokyo. The incident appears to have happened on the north face of the mountain about 100 meters (330 feet) from the summit of a popular hiking trail. Mt. Arafune is famous locally for its colored cliffs which run between 200 to 300 meters tall (about 650 to 1,000 feet), and is considered to be one of the top 200 mountains in Japan. While there are no guard rails along the cliff edges, accidents on the mountain are reportedly rare.
I am not a big fan of his works at first.. the illustrations are too simple and ugly. But no one could pull off a best selling series without a good plot/story. Sinchan is really funny and the stories about him and his family touches the heart. Just to show how good this guy work is. RIP.
me is prefer the earlier shin-chan, more hamsup and didn't have too many spin-off story, i remember the shin-chan looked differently from vol 1-7..
from vol 40 onwards, shin-chan is getting more "mature" in some way, not so funny anymore imo
the earlier version is more fugly rite?and the malay translation also need to read few time baru paham...but for me Sin Chan one of the must read / watch

Most probably is accident... News said that the last photo in his digital camera is the shot of the cliff bottom taken from the top. They assume he accidentally dropped off the cliff after taking the photo.
