OMG My scorpion gave birth! What should I do????!!!!
Most of the scorpion available in the pet trade are mostly wild caught or being keep communally
It's not odd to find that your Scorpion suddenly gave birth after keeping it for 1year because their gestation period can range from 8-13months depending on their diet, environment and other factors
So this is what I do when I notice my Scorpion gave birth last year

Step1: Leave the mom alone until she finish giving birth
» Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... «

Step2: To feed or not to feed?
» Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... «

Step3: Separating the scorpling
» Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... «

They are still quite fragile in 2nd instar and tend to die when they molt to 3rd instar
The key is to keep the substrate damp (Not wet!) and make sure your scorpling is hydrated to keep them survive
With this method i have successfully raised 30 scorpling to 2nd instar out of 31 scorpling, 1of them died cause felt from the mom's back

FAQ
Can I feed my scorpling before they molt?
» Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... «

When can i start feeding my scorpling?
» Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... «

What should I feed to my scorpling?

Disclaimer:
This method is only apply for Heterometrus and Pandimus Sp, for other sp, they need different care
For bark scorpion can refer to: http://www.mtsociety.com/forums/index.php?topic=290.0
For desert scorpion can refer to: http://www.mtsociety.com/forums/index.php?topic=291.0

For me bigger size is easier to take care as they can eat more things and doesnt need to prekill the feeders but hav to buy a suitable tank for it but for some1 wiv limited space and finace dats a bit hard tongue.gif .For smaller 1,mayb the food source is limited to crix drumsticks, mealworms and pinheads.Mealworms sometimes is bigger than the scorps itself which u nid to prekill it.Drumsticks is a good food source but it is a waste for the whole crix if u dun hav other inverts to feed on it whereas pinheads u nid to breed them urself or u knw how to get them.It just all depend on u.I am happy if i got any invert to take care smile.gif

Hi all members,

I'm new to Scorpion world. I got my baby AFS from Rafiq. I'm found this creature it so interesting like tarantula. Well, I doing some basic research on it since i'm new here, hopefully sifu-sifu around here able to provide guiding to little brother biggrin.gif

May i know how often should feed that creature for size of sling ? Isn't same concept with tarantula (moulting/feeding) ? Btw, how to know that the scopion is thin or fat ?

Juz like how u differentiate a slim babe and a pork chop
Same rule apply, if wan example see lester aka s9876743532 pictures for fat one
Same rule for how often u feed tarantula sling
I ll feed it once or twice a week
Read 1st page for more info

ok. congrats ryo on V6 and i hope u are enjoying the longi splings.

selamat hari raya everyone. i'm facing difficulty to be online since i am moving a lot.

ok trip series.

while i am in pekan at my mothers in law house i had to clean the outdoor store room. and i found this fellas.
user posted image
this one is laying an egg sac
user posted image

id was given to me by leetplayer as harlequin roach.(Neostylopyga rhombifolia). some info of the roach from Allpet Roaches:

The Harlequin roach is certainly among the neatest looking of the pet roaches and is a very quick moving medium sized species. Nymphs start out life as a plain tan color but slowly molt to become very incredible looking adults. Harlequin roaches easily scale smooth surfaces and like most other glass climbers can be controlled by petroleum jelly. Also, this roach is an egg laying species.

sorry ryo for the roach story. tried to find scorps but only find roaches and pedes but i think it is in line with my trip series posting. lol.

some bads news ......

total 6 nos were born ..so far 2 nos were dead .eaten by the mum.. now left 4 nos ontheir mum back...
going to seperate them into individual container once they down down ...
i wonder if this sp is able to store sperm in their like my Isometrus Maculatus scorpion. we should see lol ...

27/9 - total of 6 nos enter the world of ours 4 were on the back of
it mum. 2 nos on the sand.. a little brood considered. i wonder
why .. normally is woul dbe about 10 to 12 nos..

28/9 - the 2nos on the sand did not make it. consumed by it mum.
may they rest in peace ... wonder how long will the little one
molt to 2nd instar. hope no more death from now onwards..
feed a cricket leg to mum and she ate it ... her size is still the
same as comapred to last .. more birth ??? or i am thinking too
much.

28/9 - this brood was considered quite speical to me. consider it
rare and hard to get.
decided to name them "lucifer" , "jesus" , "satan" and "saint"

28/9 - current size of each scorpion were abt 5mm each length wise., able the same size as my
Isometrus Maculatus recent brood scorpling size . small indeed and color was creamy white .
expact to see them touch down in a week time.

when sort of.. depend how much the scorpling can consume....
btw it is not advisable.. many disagree to this method... personally i try it out based on experiment mode.
powerfeeding reduce the scorpion life span greatly... raq did mention once abt internal explosion or bleeding on this issue when power fed.

therefore do think twice before attempting....... rclxms.gif

personally i have some experiment with afs . do read up older threads and might find some finding of mine based of feeding from amount to size of container etc which affect feeding of this sp

1-3 times a week is ok, IMO scorpling should be feed more
When they grow up u can slowly cut down their feeding schedule to once a week
Like that it should take around 1-2years to matured

Thanks guys. Haven't counted them scorplings yet. I think I'll leave the mother alone for a few more days.

A nice site for ideas on a rack - http://www.lpracks.com/

One of the most beautiful things about keeping inverts is being able to stack more than 200 animals in a 2 x 3 rack. Beat that snake keepers!

Nice racks, but they come in ridiculous prices as well sadly. sad.gif

Which gives me an idea, maybe we should like put our minds together to design a perfect racking system either modded from true furnitures or built from scratch! smile.gif

Ryo, how's the plastic shopping coming along? Any news? smile.gif

Have not setup anything awesome yet but I'm looking in to getting more of them for communal setups. Then again, planning on a plastic racking system that is more efficient and cheap. Exoterras are pretty expensive!! sad.gif

I'll definitely be needing your pictars to plan that, do snap as many pictures as you can man!!

Hi Lester. I'm sorry for the babies. I have no comfort to offer, but perhaps cherishing the chance you had would do much more. You had a gravid ortho, and it gave you babies. That is in itself a blessing. And owh, humility never kills a scorp. tongue.gif

Good luck to more babies.

this is a continuation of my trip in kl. sort of.

first and foremost i would like to wish a very happy birthday to hyorinmaru. hope u can get more interesting scorpions in the future and not be stung by them.
this is a continuation of my ikano trip while i was in kl
these events all happen from the 20th of september to the 29th of september 2009.

after my ikano trip i was busy with raya preparations and stuff.
i went back to celebrate raya in pekan and was helping cleaning the store room when i came upon these beauties.
user posted image

and 1 of them was producing an egg case.

user posted image

id was given to me by leetplayer as harlequin roach.(Neostylopyga rhombifolia). some info of the roach from Allpet Roaches:

The Harlequin roach is certainly among the neatest looking of the pet roaches and is a very quick moving medium sized species. Nymphs start out life as a plain tan color but slowly molt to become very incredible looking adults. Harlequin roaches easily scale smooth surfaces and like most other glass climbers can be controlled by petroleum jelly. Also, this roach is an egg laying species.

i also found a few centipedes which i think were cherry heads but were unable to catch any due to lacking of equipments.

on the 26th of september i traveled to (secret location) for some r&r with the wife. i have to say it is really a nice place to be.
some fact that arent told in any travel brouchers.

tempreature is around 18-21 degrees. so it is cold. any herping attempt at night should be done with cold weather cloths. and that is not accoutning for windy conditions or rain at night.

there are many hiking trails. some are 500 meters long and easy to cover and some are 5000 meters long and is dangerous.
for night time herping i would recommend the (secret trail) not far from the (secret location). it is 500 meters long and is dense pack with trees. here is a picture of the trail from my hotel room:

user posted image
the trail runs from the left to the right and it is much longer. i just couldnt fit the trail in my camare lens.

most of the trees in (secret location) have barks like this:
user posted image and are always covered in moss.

vegetation is really thick in (secret location). no signs of human activities anywhere. not many tourist also.

shops close early here. u have to get your dinner by 9 if not u will be starving.
hotel rates are acceptable.

on my way down from (secret location) through "The Gap" i found this fellow.
user posted image
seems it was run over by a car but it was still alive. the local call it "Banik". all i can tell it is a local land tortoise sp.

when i woke up the next morning in my house i was surprise to see this fellow greeted me:

user posted image
an adult blue bronzeback. docile fellow. even let me handle him.

that evening i went to Giant Shah Alam for some last minute shopping and i found a small stall selling scorpions. they were H.Spinifers and were selling at RM35 each. Unfortunately the guy who was manning the stall had no idea on how to sex or keep the scorpions properly.
user posted image

both were females and 1 of them i suspect is gravid. both had their acoulus cut off. very pity sight of the scorpions. here is the picture of the enclosure:

user posted image

i'm worried about the trade of these scorpions. not that they are lethal or anything like that but the misinformation that shopkeepers give is what i'm afraid of.

i also gotten my self a book not about scorpions but about entomology.
user posted image
i notice this book at a second hand book store. nice book. does explains how and what is use to classify insects and arachnids in their orders.

other then this book i also got myself 4 types of forceps. make my job easier.

thats is all from me
i'm back in sarawak already at the time of posting and is getting ready to go on another trip in the forest around my area. another report will follow after the trip is done.

1) sifting the 2 bags of coco fibre that i just bought
2) change the subs of my P.Regalis (i know its out topic here)
3) change subs of my Female AFS that will give birth soon
4) change subs for the mealworm beetle and check if theres tiny mealworms babies..
5) stick some sheets of glasses to the modified tank.

All this was done like in the middle of the morning while chating to people and playing some online games...... finished at 4 am to day... lol

I mated them few days ago when i first got the male but it fail
Both are juddering but male doesnt seems to be interested while the female tried to attack the male several times
After 15minutes i gave up and assume that the female already gravid

I separated them and feed each of them a cricket and heavily misted their enclosure
Few days later (Today) i tried again and this time with better luck

At 1st the female acted aggressively and try2 sting him, i stop it with my tweezer
Then the male gave her a sting to calm her down and they start dancing around, passionately
Female keep her chela close to her carapace as in defense mode while the male pulling her around nervously
Within 2 minutes, the male settle down a spot on the bark in the enclosure and stop there for quite awhile
I look from the side and i can see spermatophore coming out from his opperculum

Upon laying the spermatophore, he dragged the female on it but the female kinda refuse to go near the spermatophore
After trying for awhile the male manage to pull her above the spermatophore
Again i tried to peek from the side to see if it touched her opperculum but before i can see anything they started break off and attempting to sting and pinch each others to death

Immediately i stop them with tweezer and fight off the female and end the mating process
I'm not sure if any insemination was made but the female doesnt stay on top of it for too long nor bending down her body as written in the internet

I assume that she might really already gravid but was calmed by the male sting and was "forced" into the mating
I read that the spermatophore will plug the opening of her opperculum to prevent other male from inseminate her if she already mated
Perhaps she realize that she cant take the spermatophore at the end and tried to break off and kill the male

Whatever it is i'm looking forward to see the outcome

Envenomation characteristic/symptom typical to this particular species is what I call 'eyeball 360', where the eyes of the unlucky victim begins rolling to the back uncontrollably. Centruroides sculpturatus was renamed Centruroides excilicauda sometime ago.

Lol. About care, there's two morphs(based on locality) of C.vitts. The Xeric and the Mesic. Xerics are those found in arid habitats and Mesics are found in more humid habitats. What we have are from Xeric regions and will not do well in humid setups. They will appreciate a cocopeat+sand mix substrate.

Have fun keeping scorpions instead of boring petrocks. And good luck getting babies!

I'm a cheapo and a cheapo will always look for the cheapest solution to things. Guys, anyone here got any idea where I can find play sand that are cheap? I'm looking to rehouse my Nebo Hierichonticus and I don't really need that much sand hence the reason why I'm not planning to spend on exoterra's desert sand.

And oh yes, has anyone tried using those river bed sand that you can buy from gardening shops? The RM1 for a full big pack of em. The person that was selling it claimed that they were harvested from the river and hence the name. I have doubts and I need advice. smile.gif

And by the effing way, nice picture you have there Ryo, I'm more keen to look at the setup though. nod.gif

yes kar i think it can be use. just get some and sift them through a coarse sift to get the contaminents out then microwave them to kill off any microbes that may be lurking inside there and u are set to go.

i like ur thinking. i'm on the same brainwave as u are. the thing is stuf are harder to come by here in sibu then in kl. so most of the items i use have to be

a)improvise
b)diy
c)breed myself.

cost are going up but there are ways of reducing the impact of the price hike via sensible and creative thinking.

Yes, akagi I do agree that everything should be improvised and DIY-ed if it is possible. I mean true that we as keepers should probably invest more in terms of housing these beautiful looking creatures but I do believe as well that we should find the cheapest yet best solution out of everything because we can't exactly just keep one, we need more and MOAR!! biggrin.gif

Added on October 11, 2009, 12:58 ambtw i just recieved news yesterday on a actual location of this where it could be found smile.gif guess what tongue.gif lol ...

pics taken not by me but information and source is highly trusted ..
pics taken in sept 2009 smile.gif look like there is some light for this smile.gif
going to pay the place a visit ..to check it out ..

due to the fact the the population of this sp is dropping and the area where it was found is in danger and might be making way for new delevoplment which is a sad thing.. i am unable to say the location in order not to affect the natual population and prevent over havesting ..

but most of all .. i have to sent credits to the effort of this person who took this picture so well done...

depend on where u release it.
but i dont think it will damage the ecosystem there (knowing its a local sp) But scout the area 1st before u do release them there..

If they are nt exist in that area, releasing them there will damage the ecosystem
Only release to place where they are found
Too much could damage too so its really a lot of research to do b4 u decide to release them to a location

so far .. the sp is only found at that location as i know of... i think the best solution currently is not to release it back to the wild..first but to breed more and not let it extinct if the area is going to make way for new delevopment..

btw .. i found another location for Isometrus Maculatus scorpion too .. lol ...

hmm... u r a lucky guy finding new areas of these scorps....
well if the soon to b developed area is not far from another forest or its habitat then it should b ok to release it there... my 0cent ... coz as far as i know.. the only person who found this sp in the wild is u n a friend of mine way back north...

In that case, if we know that the place gonna be tore down sooner or later, why cant we save as much as we can? If we let them reside at the same place, one day they will still be gone forever. IMO what we can do is get them, cb and release in some kind of hutan simpanan or what... At least under our care (surely not me la, I know I am not experience enough, but I am talking about those pros) we can ensure their survival. Just my 0 cent

well my take on the introduction of the sp in areas that are not known to have that sp is just release them there coz the sp is a native sp in the malay peninsular, and singapore. it just maybe because of development and their natural habitat criteria that are not meet thus causing them to be wipe out from a certain area.

releasing 20 of them in an area of about 1km square is the most ideal option. u are not releasing too many until it disturb the eco-balance yet no too little until it is not viable for them to reproduce.

but that is my 2 cents la.

I have an offside location to keep crickets... biggrin.gif
Dug a hole in a unwanted land near my apartment and put in a plastic box with holes on the top for ventilation.
That's where i put my adult crickets.
Pinheads are with me in a small exoterra faunarium.

hello guys. i have sumthing to report and ask at the same time.

i found "things" on this crickets. and when i say things it is because i cant identify them. i tried taking a look of this nodes on the crickets heads under a magnifying glass but i cant really see anything that suggest these are mites or a living thing
complete lacking of any visual legs or mouth pieces.

can anybody tell me what they are and if they are mites i am just wondering are their parasitic or carrion mites?

caution! if ur just had food dont click or if ur the gross type dont click also.

Today i mated both of my P.Imperator again, being convinced that the mating was unsuccessful previously by a friend

This time the female doesn't show much aggression as last time
The male was pushing for a mating dance while the female just keep moving backward but at last was forced into position by the male

Immediately both exchange sting, i used a tweezer to prevent the female from stinging the male until the male finish stinging her
Both was dancing around and the male drop spermatophore not long after that

This time the female stayed on it longer than last time, aprrox 1minutes but i still didn't see her bending down in curve taking in the spermatophore as told by my friend
At least she stay on it longer this time, i will not proceed to mate them again and see how it goes 1st

The break off was a fierce battle between them both and my tweezer
Luckily both separated unharmed (Well maybe my tweezer was hurt lolz)

Pictures or it never happen
It start with a fight

not like my Pt.. or some other desert scorpion like a.a or a.m or h.h.. they attack when threathen

well... the above is based on my own observation smile.gif

1. Hide
2. Humidity
3. Void from heat

update in the pic of mites i posted yesterday.

they are called crickets mites and infest young crickets. apparently they drop off the adults for some reason or another.

they are parasitic. thankfully they only attack crickets.

on another note, i found a colony of Liocheles Australasiae. got dome really good fat adults and some really cute juviniles running around the tree.

Nice find, any pictures? I'm also currently looking to keep a line of breeding of the Liocheles Australasiae, but I'm still waiting for someone else's female to pop where I can ninja some! Hahahaha laugh.gif

gave him my c.hentzi for breeding.. so now.. hopefully the females will b 'humping' my male...all 2 of them..

Added on October 14, 2009, 7:24 pmjust checked on the afs babies... it eat the mealworm that the mother has killed.. thes one on top of her chelicerae and predipalps eating the mealworm... But sadly i saw a scopling being devoured by their siblings.. two against one dead spling.. poor guy.. other than that can see 3 splings are walking about around the mother...
i shall leave the babies with mother untill they reach 4i.. i shall document it on the scorpion forum... watch that space.. lol icon_rolleyes.gif

Hey guys, a little surprise I got today. This morning I woke up with 6 extra Centruroides Sculpturatus scorplings and a bag of infertile scorplings in my female Centruroides Sculpturatus enclosure.

The problem is, it was eating the infertile scorplings and then it started eating the ones piggybacking her and now it's down to 2 scorplings left. I'm not really sure what caused this. I have not been stressing her at all.

I read somewhere that says that it might be a sign that the female has given birth to a batch of bad quality scorplings and she is eating them up to prepare for a second brood. Could that be true?

that or that she need energy for her. I had one afs brood that the mother eat entirely. was told that it may b that she needs energy so she ate her brood. It may b true though coz i only feed her little and did not feed her after the birthing process was done. But i dunno this is my observation. Currently i have another batch at the moment and not even one scorpling has been devoured by the mother except 1 that has been devoured by their siblings. Coz i feed her 3 times since she gave birth. now the scorplings are 2i just 2 days ago..

Yup, I read about that too. What I'm actually concerned about now isn't exactly about the scorplings anymore. I mean, I can make it happen again. That's not really a problem. What I'm really concerned about is actually the welfare of the mother. sad.gif

i dont know much on y the mother dropped the infertile embryos but it may b due to stress level. Mayb u didnt harm her indirectly but mayb there is something that makes her stress out. Wut u can do now is try to give her food. if crix them take our their hind legs so it wont jump around. Place it gently infront of her carefull not to startle her. Thats how i do when feeding the mother...

Dun think its necessary and it will only stress the mother more
She ady consumed a lot of unfertilized eggs and babies, guess she ady have enuff
That's a lot of nutrient

Yes, I will have to agree with Ryo, she's settled down already. The one and only baby that is on her back seems to be fine with one on the floor. Others are all completely wiped off. I'm guessing another brood though. Referring my previous pictures, I can actually see that she's almost as fat as she was before she popped. Hopefully, things will go good on this! smile.gif

Hey guys,

I have decided to take out the remaining 2 1st instar babies and raise them up myself. Been reading a guide in venomlist and I do freaking hope that it would turn out fine. These two lil buggers seem to be awesome!! smile.gif

Dude, I know for sure that IF they were on their mom's back of course they have a higher chance to survive. But ze problem nao is not that. They aren't on their mom's back and the mom haven't been even TRYING to pick them up.

They basically wandered too far off away from their mom. I did a few research and yes it is possible to raise 1st instars. I rather try raising them than let nature's will to kill them. Furthermore, if I'm able to do this, I believe it will be a huge addition to the knowledge of all keepers here.

Since they are bound to die in nature's hands, why not let my own pair of hands give them a second chance to live? Not playing god but seriously, why not?

a word of advice.

dont put your hopes to high.

the experience of taking care a 1i scorpling is really sumthing that i dont want to repeat. really heart wrenching when u see 1 by 1 the babies die of.

i guess i was lucky that 1 survived.

anyway, all the best to you Kar. i hope u succeed on this awesome experiment and experience that u are about to go through.

No lah, it's actually a bottle which holds Gui Ling Gao. For those who do not understand, it's something like a freaking chinese herbal jelly and that's the bottle that comes together with it. A bottle is about RM16.50 and I was lucky because when I went to muh buddies' place, I found the bottle lying on the table.

One of his housemates threw the bottle there and I was like, I see a bark scorpion mansion there! Initial idea was to use RM5 pushpots which I still think it looks epic I mean judging from the price and as well as the size and all. Best enclosure for small scorpions imho!! nod.gif

well .. actually i looking more towards the dry clay powder .so that i am able to mix them with sand and create a more impact sand structure ..
i aready bought a new tank and sands.. now just need to buy the clay powder. 10% clay powdwer rest with sand and water ... mix well and do the structure .. let it dry .. and it will be readi for scorpions to roam smile.gif

1987yuda - have u made ur research and do you have 'a' scorpion? Start with AFS (Asian Forest Scorpion) such as Spinifer/Longimanus if u can spare more money an Emperor for your 1st scorpion. The one in the Video is not recommended for beginners.

something to spice things up. its getting really slow in here. So here is another 1 of my "walk-walk find inverts" series.

what prompt me to gp herping today was an information that there is a cummunal nest of adults and juviniles h.longimanus which to me is too good to be true. H.longimanus are known as cummunal species in captive conditions but to find them communal in the wild is very rare.

user posted image

very deep and dark hole but too small for my camera to go in much further

so of i go to the said location and after much poking and trying to get what ever it was inside to come out i finally stopped when 2 things were apparent to me.

1st the hole was very deep and none of my instruments can reach till the bottom. since it was a man made structure i cant make the whole bigger without damaging the building the hole was situated.

2nd i didnt have any imaging devices such as a flexiscope to have a good view inside the hole.

in the end i abandone the hole and met with a caretaker of the area. she said that in numerous occasions especially after rain she would see scorpions in various locations. i would follow up on this claims ASAP for the scorpions are not only in close proximity to human but areliving along side humans which is really great.

having with me alot of gear i decided to do a simple survey of the LA colonies. since the LA colonies are situated mostly on coconut trees, i decided to make my cencus smaller an limit myself to coconuts trees that are not taller then me since i lack the proper climbing skills and tools.

the first tree that i came upon which was in a different sector didnt have any LA in them but contains alot of ants and this little guy:

user posted image

user posted image

user posted image

all i know it is a type of jumping spider

moving on to other trees in the area yielded the same result: no LA. this was surprising to me for this sector im exploring is a disturbed the least in all of the sectors. moving on to the intermediate sector it yielded the same results. no LA colonies.

1 similarities that i can find between the 2 sectors that dont contain any LA is that they are very exposed to the sun. the enviroment is very dry. i think that would be a valid reason why there are no LA colonies in the 2 sectors.

before that i would like to inform that this is an area of about roughly 5 acres wide. so it is big and herping at 4 in the afternoon was hellishly hot.

moving to my next sector i did find a single LA on my first tree in that sector.

user posted image

fairly large adult. seems to be in good health. further poking around confirmed that this tree has a colony in it. a few more adults and juviniles were observed scampering and hiding.

something caught my eye and it was a large spider.

user posted image

user posted image
any id would be nice since i am really dont know anythign about spiders. this to me seems to be another type of jumping spider

this is the tree that i found the first colony.

user posted image
note the damp patch on the tree trunk just below the frawns. that is where the LA are living

moving to other trees in this sector and all of them have a colony of LA in them. here are a few more pictures:

user posted image
i notice this little fellow was munching on an ant

user posted image
another juvinile

and that is all for today. i will update as soon as i have onformation on the longimanus nest. hopefully it is true and not a snake nest.

comments and critics are welcome. thank you.

looks like my breeding project turn out well. see the food.imagine how many crickets are in there. this is a tub that can hold 8 adult afs in a communal setup nicely.

i'm gonna doa week to week review on the conditions of the colonies that i find. i also am going to make a map of the locations and some pictures of the surrounding and try to find out why are they more concentrated on the more busy areas as oppose to the quieter areas and also to find out what they actually eat in the wild.

not for feeding. pure breeding. i have coco peat inside as substrate too. millipedes will be recruited accordingly. it seems that those normal millipedes have an population explosion a few months ago. they are everywhere now.

try using bird nest fern. They're hardy and do well on high humidity setups.

Ryo, I think what went wrong is that the substrate. Imo, the guy used those soil that is quite sticky and will harden when dry, example like those yellow mud/sand/soil when use jentolak korek lantai, will find a lot.... Coco fiber dont really hold the shape, they collapse unless you housing a tarantula which can web 2 secure the structure. I think they are more suitable for inverts which need drier condition cause they will "melt" when too wet or you can try clay to shape the structure and cover with cocofiber. And for bird nest fern, IMO do not need to buy from nursery, they are available on big tree at road side. 1 thing, they contain a lot of bugs, cause they grow on rotten parts of trees and usually contain mites. That is the reason why i still havent plant the fern that i got inside my inverts tank. And quite big bark you got there, bought it or?

looks like my breeding project turn out well. see the food.imagine how many crickets are in there. this is a tub that can hold 8 adult afs in a communal setup nicely.

i'm gonna doa  week to week review on the conditions of the colonies that i find. i also am going to make a map of the locations and some pictures of the surrounding  and try to find out why are they more concentrated on the more busy areas as oppose to the quieter areas and also to find out what they actually eat in the wild.

sam, those pellets looks so colourful, a 8 years old kid will love it tongue.gif
Oh ya, btw, how you prevent those big crix outgrown the smaller crix and eventually eat them up? I found out that my crix number have been decreasing, mostly those smaller size gone. But those bigger size do grow well.

well fallenangel, those are whiskas cat food and they are safe, i even nibble on them from time to time. they are abit on the salty side.

plus i dont have kids in my room. this is at my camp not my hometown.

well actually i just let nature do the work for me. this tank was not clean or maintain for almost 3 month already.only last sunday i decided to clean it up. i was expecting rotting crickets and tons of very dirty rotting meterial but to my surprise there was none. only a kind of dust was at the bottom.

i thing that i always made sure to have are a ridiculous amount of hiding places. i use 4 egg crates in that setup. so there is ample room for them to hide. food i put on top but the as u know crickets they will dragg the food down. so what is left the small ones will eat while the big guys stay at the top.

and that is it actually. i dont have any other way of explaining on how i keep them alive till now. they survive 14 days without my care when i was in kl so i must be doing sumthing right.

rideon,

i think there is an excess of 150 maybe more cost there are pinheads in that enclosure. so i cant really say. like i said this is a breed and forget system and i am anticipating the sounds of the male crickets soon. i miss the chirps.the more the merrier.
