3 years ago, my desktop was top of the line with the best and latest of everything.

i'm sure its crap now compared to what i can get in the market.

please recommend a good Dell desktop for me, preferably, one of these:

http://www1.ap.dell.com/my/en/home/top_pic...s=mydhs1&~ck=mn

i don't need a monitor, so can save some cost there.

just need something that will allow me to play wow without having to be too flashy.

cheaper the better.

What were the specs of your desktop 3 years ago?

There's some issues in-game even with high-end hardware that you may not get what you bargain for.

can't remember my PC old specs, had 2gb ram and a really good graphic card 7800 i think...

Considering the Inspiron 545 now, RM1699 seems reasonable.

ATI® Radeon™ HD 4350 512MB DDR2 is the graphics card, comes with 3gb ram.

what do you think?

Hmm...atm, I'm lagging like hell on a 192 kbps line. Yeah screamyx. So can't see what are the Inspiron specs.

See what others have to say. I would beef up RAM to about 4 GB though since it's Vista.

IMO, you might need to go any hardware shop to get custom instead of getting dell package pc...

Yup, decent enough for WoW.

But I'm thinking you might want to wait 2 months for the Windows 7 to raise the hardware stakes for no extra cost. If you buy now you will immediately be one generation behind.

unless ur goin for 64bit, 3gb and 4gb isnt that much of a difference minus dual channel mode from 2x 2gb. as there are memory address limitation from 32bit os, the amount of RAM you may have is "capped"

Don't bother with anything. Wait till Windows 7 is released, wait for DX11 cards to be released, and get a whole new system from there. Your PC will last you many more years, so no point rushing to get a pc that will not fully support future games.

1) windows 7 can be upgraded for free from current windows vista releases.

2) dx10 cards prices are plummeting insanely, an option of buying a cheap dx10 card that plays WoW perfectly, and then sell it off for dx11 cards is there. and also, since this topic is for WoW, WoW does not support dx10 or dx11 exclusively. in other worse, it wont matter nuts if ur gonna have a dx11 card, or a dx10 card, or neither.

This Christmas is slightly special, they start selling Windows 7 PC with a new generation of mainstream components. The core duo and other stuff you see on sale now are older generation. My humble opinion la, if you can wait a couple months for windows 7 desktops with new Core i5s and thingamajigs, might as well.

If you can't wait, I think that RM1699 desktop is quite decent for WoW (until Cataclysm).

Actually, see what happens during Raya. DELL tends to drop prices during the RAYA period although not sure whether it's the latest or not.

Hmm...and when is that Black Friday day? The day after the US Thanksgiving Day when they give the discounts on goods? Just before the Xmas break? I noticed that DELL Malaysia starts giving some cheap deals around then too.

Yup, you can buy a DX10 card now and sell it off when DX11 cards become available, but by then, the retail price of your card would have dropped even more, and you would lose ALOT of money if you want to re-sell your card, no matter how new it is.

Yes, WoW doesn't even use DX10 and 11, but why upgrade for just ONE game? If you're upgrading, make sure it's even worth it to do so. If you're ever ONLY gonna play WoW, stick with your system. If you're planning for your computer to last you years from now on with full DX11 functions for future games, get a new system. Nobody buys a new bleeding-edge pc JUST for WoW, cos WoW doesn't need it.

its a given that pc part prices keeps dropping as new stuffs come out. and there will always be the waiting game. the question lies if a person want to play with it or not. if someone wants a PC now, you telling him to wait next year for x item, you're already defeating his purpose of having a pc now.

again, look at the thread title, it says WoW, ONE game. and no, WoW can be demanding by itself depending on what you run with. and who said nobody buys a bleeding-edge pc just for WoW? i know many people who does it, and hell, even i did it. and just FYI, my pc cant even go everything max details with AA/AF etc while WG/raiding. fps will dip below desirable levels. back then when i got it though, i can even get up to 150 FPS with everything maxed out including AF maxed/AA maxed.

i5 isn't going to drop that much in price to be under the 2k price range anytime soon by the looks of it. If anything, i5's are probably gonna at most go down to 2-2.5k setups by mid next year I predict.

On another note, it's no point waiting for DX11 because let's be realistic here, he wants something budget and cheap, and trust me there won't be that much of a difference between the lowest end DX11 cards and the low-mid-range DX10 cards now (which are pretty decent themselves for the price). Having DX11 capability on a low-end card from next generation cards won't really help, because with that kind of processing power you probably won't even be using DX11. That, and OP mentioned about getting this machine mainly for WoW, and WoW is only using DX9.

About waiting for Windows 7 - I totally agree. However, you don't really have to wait, if you buy one with Vista preinstalled now you have to pay for shipping and whatnot of Windows 7 and then deal with the upgrade (not hard but still something). There are people out there who're able to source Windows 7 already (Yes, Final RTM version, genuine copies) including myself, so if you're interested I can help you get it too. Much cheaper than retail I might add. Start clean with a clean Windows 7 compared to get Vista now and upgrade to 7 in 2-3 months from now.

Anyway, I recently built a computer for a friend for just shy of 1.5k, and it was a decent computer that's able to play most of the latest games with decent settings. It's not top of the line but it's cheap and it works. If OP is interested then feel free to PM me and I'll help out for free. As per wow professions, tip if you're happy with my service tongue.gif Just helping out fellow forumer smile.gif

Well it's not about DX11, WoWers don't care about it laugh.gif and yes that offer OP linked has the W7 upgrade option.

But i5 desktops are of the new generation, so the buyer saves himself money on one generation of upgrade cycle, and probably ready for the Cataclysm expansion from the get-go.
