Hey guys and girls

I wrote this simple guide on finding the right drivers (for missing drivers - and those unknown drivers) if any with Windows 7. For instance , now we are going to look drivers for our Ethernet (I've removed the drivers just to demonstrate on how to look drivers) . The main reason why I am showing this is that rebranding occurs for instance D-link rebrands their Broadcom drivers as D-link DWL-510 (for instance). The real thing is based on the chipset. So by getting device id and vendor id , we can trace who really made the card and by finding out who did , we can install the correct (mostly generic drivers) to get our device to work.

To do this , firstly go to Device Manager. It can be done in several ways (it can be launched from Start , by typing Device Mananger). Right click Computer , going to properties and selecting Device Manager. These are the common ways to start. Alternatively you may type devmgmt.msc (or by creating a shortcut to it)

As we see below, there is an unknown device in which Windows 7 isn't able to find the correct device for it. So to find out more about the device , I right click it and select properties. Alternatively you may double click this
Attached Image

Select Detail Tab and then select Hardware IDs from the drop down list
Attached Image

Now you'll see few IDs.

Take note of VEN and DEV . In this case its PCI\VEN_10EC&DEV_8136 . I would ignore the rest as its device sub-id , sub-vendor. These how vendors rebrand a generic card into their own name.

Now I fire up google and google for 'PCI\VEN_10EC&DEV_8136' (You may see the results by clicking here)

So I've managed to find out that the Unknown Device is my Ethernet card , and its made by Realtek. There are couple of links in the results and one it from Realtek's site. I've an option of trying peoples suggestion there in Google. Some of them even have links to where to download the drivers. So I've my options opened and I do know who made the card instead of just saying I've HP Gigabit Ethernet . This is another way you could find latest drivers for your card if its not updated by OEM.

This holds true if Windows 7 installs generic drivers. These generic drivers include for WLAN , sound card whereby you'll have some problems such as "distorted audio" or other slow downs. For this case , its possible to use drivers from Windows XP , Windows Vista and even earlier version of Windows 7. Here is the list

For Windows 7 X86_64 (64-bit) , you could use drivers from :-
Windows Vista 64-bit (98% compatibility with Windows 7)
Windows XP 64-bit (ot works for certain PCI cards (legacy) , (legacy) TV Tuners and Radio tuners whereby there is no more drivers) (Do turn off driver signing)

Keep in mind that if you use Windows 7 x86_64 and if you have some old drivers written for windows xp 64-bit , there may be some issues with it. For instance MCE-150 TV tuner , if you have 4GB of RAM , you'll have to set the memory limit in windows as 4095 (aka less then 4GB) - otherwise it wouldn't work at all.

For Windows 7 i386 (32-bit) you could use drivers from :-
Windows Vista 32-bit (99% - its higher because on how kernel , low level stuff are being handled is as almost the same as vista)
Windows XP (May not work for all devices , however its possible to get really old devices to play nice with Windows 7)

Hope you've learned something today about your hardware

This guide works with Windows Vista as well !

Alternatively use this database to find who made your card/device :- http://www.pcidatabase.com/

Realtek already has Windows 7 drivers for their LAN and audio.

Intel has chipset drivers but they are based on Windows 7 RC1.

ATI and NVidia have their Windows 7 drivers out for a while now.

Look in one of the spoilers in that thread above, find for the one with a list of manufactures.

Many other manufactures already have got drivers for Windows 7.

Is that BenQ Joybook S4?
or is that some other hardware?

BTW: You can use Vista drivers too if you can't find it. Read prasys tutorial first, then try his methods. I am still trying to get your drivers, but can't find a proper and legit link.

try this

Download the attached file. Extract to somewhere simple, for example: C:\DRIVERTEMP\
- Run devmgmt.msc
- Expand (+) Display Adapters
- Right Click on Standard VGA Adapter
- Click on Update Driver Software
- Click on Browse my computer for driver software
- Browse to where you extracted the RAR file ( ex: C:\DRIVERTEMP\ )
- Ensure Include Subfolders is checked.
- Click Next
- Windows does its thing, Prompts for Restart. Do so.

dont know... but last i help a creative sound blaster user find his sound card driver. at the end. realtek driver works for his creative sound card.

u can try... no harm. instead while installing the driver will detect ya sound card. if it doesnt match your sound card. the installation will prompt u hardware not found and installation terminated.

Well you could let the Windows install the driver by itself first and then use Windows Update to get driver. If really can't get Win7 driver, Vista 64bit driver should be working fine though.

Win7 detected all the drivers except the intel one. I used the 1st method and found out that intel not release the driver for win7..

So, can i just ignore it since my monitor not connect to the intel GC or i must install the driver with xp version..??

Friend, if you are using standalone graphic card, disable your on board graphic... You don't need it.

no worry about the driver mate. i am using windows 7 ultimate version. after installed the os, you need to wait a while for the windows 7 to automatically downlaod driver online and install for you unless your device doesnt have driver for windows7. if your ethernet driver not being installed after installing windows 7 then you need to install yourself by using prasys's way OR check out the chipset and google for it.

yes. it works for the VGA adaptor. try to change the SETUP.EXE compatability to Windows XP SP3 and run as administrator. but because the video controller is not support by 915GMS/910GML. your aero is not working. i did make a even older intel graphic card work on windows 7. so i know its working and no video playback laggy with real alternative and MPC.

Cant seems to find the correct driver for my PCI to sataraid card driver.

Card Name : PCI to sataraid 150 4port .
On the box it has this name 'Dtech'

In xp it will auto detect and has this 'Silicon Image siI3114 controller' appearing in my device manager. I've already tried silicon image driver for win 7 & vista, both sets of driver not working. On Dtech website they only have winxp & win 2000 drivers.

Anyone have the correct win 7 driver ?

I have just formatted my laptop [ACER Aspire 5040] and upgraded to Windows 7 from Windows XP since my laptop is getting very slow in starting up.

Everything is OK until my bro tried to connect my laptop to linksys router in my house last night. It cannot detect even one wireless network cry.gif CD of ACER drivers that I have is only for XP.

Am I suppose to revert to XP? Can this problem solved by downloading Windows 7 driver for ACER on the net?

Anyone can enlighten me on this matter? icon_question.gif Thanks. notworthy.gif

Thanks TS for the guide. I just installed my PC with Win7 Home Premium 64-bit last nite and I have installed every driver (Win7 64-bit) but I found 2 items in device manager shown as 'Unknown device'. Is it possible that this is the gameport of my Sound Blaster Live Audigy? (I know Win7 does not support game port). The other unknown device is still a mystery to me, I will look into this (using ur guide) tonite. Anyway, my LAN is working find.

One is Gameport (of my Sound Blaster Audigy 2 ZS) which is not supported by Win7 and
another one is asus (P5QL) motherboard ACPI driver -no driver available currently. Thank god these are not critical device.

My ACPI driver issues resolved already by Microsoft support... nice.
Gameport -clearly Win7 will not support this device -no problemo.

actually there is a very useful software caled Unknown Device Identifier (UDI), it can tell you what brand and type of device it is and ease your way to search for drivers. I have been using it for years for computer repair service so far no problem. It can be downloaded in this link:

sry for my noobie question below...

The drivers for windows 7 are only for those who upgraded from Vista or xp?

If I'm buying a new laptop and it says it comes with Windows 7, do I still need such drivers? The Windows7 will be pre-installed OR comes in CD for me to install myself (so now i need these drivers?)

Help!

I'm confused...

A laptop comes with Windows7 means it is pre-installed, in other words it already completely installed for you, including hardware drivers as well. You won't get the Windows DVD, but only will get the recovery cd as well as another cd containing hardware drivers and some softwares.

it's is advisable to uninstall the old one first because it may conflicting with newer one. In fact, all driver installation should treated this way.

Usually for notebook first try search in its website for your pc model under drivers, if don't have then search drivers for each of your hardware individually in each website good luck thumbup.gif

QUOTE(prasys @ Sep 6 2009, 10:15 PM)

I have windows 7 and for some unknown reason I wasn't able to hear any sound from the computer. I just updated the drivers and its like a miracle. Thanks for sharing.

Honestly i think this is not simple guide but rather a basic knowledge how to detect our driver easily by using hardware ids.. i think i will create new guide how to find a driver the easiest and best method.. offline and online
