well in my opinion..
some of the thing practiced by the elderly cant be explained just yet and some researchers managed to find the explanation. that is the basis of the Obs/Gyn dr belief.

here are some of the example i can come out at this hour
old people used to say that if u have a toothache just put bunga cengkih to the gigi (sry cant find the english word for it)
and my dentist friend told me that the is a compound in bunga cengkih is actually used in the basis of painkiller in dental practice

sry cant find better example if ur seeking for one.
so in the end. u just believe and trust whichever way u want but make sure it wont do u any good and doesnt sound too obnoxious
