To all forummers and esp Limeuu, need your advice.

I have 3A*1A from my recent CIE level and UKCAT of 785. Two of the universities I am thinking of applying to are Kings College and Manchester. Kings College is reputable but very expensive. I am wondering whether is it worth so much to pay for Kings( that is if I get the offer), are all UK universities look upon equally as they are all difficult to get in.

I like Manchester until I found out that it is PBL. Coming from Malaysia where everything is spoon fed, I am a bit worried whether I could cope with it. Any students could explain about it? Is there a lot of differences between PBL and Integrated system?

Shouldn't you be in UK by now or you are applying for the Year 2012 September intake, which is a one year delay.
*
Yes, taking a gap year after changing my mind abt my course. From Economics to medicine.

Anyone please advise.

Hi, I have interview too with Trinity. You might want to get this book by ISAC abt medical interview. It is mainly on ethics. I used it to prepare for my UK interviews. It is very useful.

They have one on PS and UKCAT as well, if I'm not mistaken. Is that locally available or via Amazon only?
*
Thanks for the best wishes in earlier post.

I bought the medical interview and ukcat books from Amazon. Took them about 9days to arrive. Both books are very useful. I did well in the ukcat thanks to the book.

Fixed? Liverpool charging 22.5k "fixed fee not available".
*
Wow, I thought King's fee is hefty as it is London. 35k for fisrt two years and 100k for next 3 yrs. But Aberdeen is exp too in remote Scotland.

Last year was 16800 per year. 5% hike? Aberdeen last year was 13200, why such a drastic almost 100% jump. Unfair for those who applied based on last year rate n the unexpected increase.
*
Yes 5% increase. Wonder whether do they increase again in subsequent years?

Unless it's specifically stated that fees are "fixed", one can painfully assume that it will increase, and make for that adjustment in the spreadsheet!  sweat.gif
*
Hehe, that is what my mum feeling too. Sweat! Just hope no drastic increase.

Is your son going to Australia or UK uni for medicine?

There aren't many universities outside the Russell Group that offer medicine. Those that I know of are University of East Anglia, University, Keele University, University of St. Andrews, Peninsula College of Medicine and Dentistry (Partnership between Exeter and Plymouth) And Hull-York Medical School

Not sure which ones would be popular among Malaysian students as if they are diligent in their research they should be able to determine which universities they should apply to to give them a better chance of an offer. Each university has different requirements on the afore-mentioned criteria so therefore students should definitely play to their strengths smile.gif

Some medical schools eg. Norwich, Hull and York, Pennisula are not recognised by SMC.

Russell has 20 and add those that you named; not that many though. Malaysia has 20+ and is still counting.......as we are seeing an oversupply of docs in the near future and when gomen put a freeze, we could put those capacity to "foreign" students who are in need of med education. This goes well with our current promotion of medical tourism in this country.

It would be interesting to see how the current issue of unemployed nurses are being resolved.

Thanks for this update.

You are welcome. An "easier" school might be Queen Belfast which is recognised by SMC and regularly appear in UCAS extra for international students.

Is it true that Irish med schools which were very popular previously is no longer the case now. Is it a fact or just a myth?
*

If you can choose between doing a 5 yr undergrad medical course in either Australia (one of the Go8) or UK, (one of the russell group), which will you choose, under present known circumstances? What are the pertinent pros and cons?
*
Congrats to u and son. Which uni?

Exactly the point that PS and UKCAT / BMAT are equally, or for some universities, more important than AS results to "see if you have what we are looking for in medical students" . The interview then determines if the applicant is consistent with PS, plus body language etc. Assuming all boxes are checked up to this point, then academic capability comes in, thus conditional offers. Conditional offers = yes we are of the opinion that you are a good fit for our medical program, provided you meet the academic requirements. So we cannot in essence, "quantify". I think it was Elsielam who said, "we only need just that one offer".

Am glad the process is over, especially when A levels was not done.  smile.gif

Ps. Ask friend to send an email to QUBelfast. You never know, as they may be in clearing for medicine. Someone with 4 rejections last year, somehow managed to get an offer from QUBELFAST in August.
*
I think might be better to call QUB medical admission directly. Someone I know with 4rejections last year got a place with them eventually. He did get 4A* in his A level.

Hmmmm...that is quite co-incidental! This applicant went through an agent, apparently. Glad that he/they got in!

Sorry, eliseLam, not Elsielam.
*
Hi, how is the preparation going along? Confirm the accomodation and flight?

He called a few unis directly but I think only York-Hull and QUB have places for intl. It was really stressful for the whole family as he is a very good student. I think his PS and UKCAT failed him. Seeing his eg, I dare not apply for all prestigious unis, choose one so called high risk, 2 medium risk and 1 low risk. But the so called low risk rejected me after interview!!! So, I think there is really no safe unis for medicine, just play to your strength.

I was told accomodation will be known end of this month (Uni halls). Still shopping for flights.  What about yourself? Excited? You firmed KCL, or has my memory failed me?

You are right about the selection process.
*
Yes, firmed KCL and applied for accomodation. Not yet booked for flight but am getting excited and worried. A different chapter of my life, feel sad too sometimes.

The need for alternative plans is important for overseas medic education. Not Russia, please!

When is the earliest to apply for visa? Flight confirmed before visa?
*
Visa is upon getting CAS from uni. Need that to apply for visa.
