An off topic comment.

Alliance College of Medical Sciences advert:

"For the first 100 successful online applicants for medical related courses, an Apple iphone will be given free....."

Looks like there will be Mcdonald's, KFC, Pizza  and JUSCO vouchers to given out in the near future.

Sure, they are taking advantage of the gomen liberalising adverts on medical and related services.

Hope the docs dont go to:

"Come for 1st appointment, 2nd appointment free!"

exactly the point. and its pretty obvious the uni is only trying to suck money out of rich mediocre kids with these gimmicks. Thus our education and medical system collapses. hoorah.

Not to say med books in iphone would be necessary, but when a medical dictionary especially Dorland's would be useful sometimes.
One of my lecturers always told me that Powerpoint has no "power" in it...

ACMS TO BE UPGRADED TO UNIVERSITY COLLEGE SOON

ACMS) will be upgraded as university college soon, said executive chairman Datuk Dr Zainuddin Md Wazir.

He said the upgrading would enable ACMS to offer 15 new courses including medicine and medical science at degree and PhD level.

"ACMS was invited to become a university college by the Higher Education Ministry on July 19.

I din know that upgrading of a college to a university is at the invitation of the Higher Education Ministry!

Higher Education Minister said:

"Malaysia needs another 15,553 doctors in the public sector by 2020......last year, 29 tertiary institutions produced 1,845 medical graduates, while 1,908 were from overseas ......by 2020 expect local graduates to increase to 3,125....."

Wow! overseas graduates more than local graduates.....who says Malaysians no money and cannot afford overseas medic education?

And we can only increase local graduates by only 70% by Year 2020!

And dont worry, the 15,553 are only the needs in the public sector. It does not include the incresing requirements in the private sector.

Good doctors are always in demand, wherever you are!

Last week my friend's father fell and badly hurt his back. The ambulance took him to GH. Four St John guys help transfer the poor old man to the hospital trolley and wheel him in the emergency room. Guess how long before anybody attend to him?
Half an hour later!
The place was so chaotic. Some 'new' doctors was sitting at a desk chatting whilst 4 more were attending to other cases. During the waiting time, 2 doc seems to be attending to all cases whilst others...??? 6 'doc' on stand by?

Later they need the trolley and ASK the old man who was in pain to move himself onto another bed! doh.gif Only then, a doc ask to take the old man's vitals and start some procedures.

Dun start me about the wait for the x ray and x-ray facilities! But what takes the cake was after 2 hours, they have to take blood again cos the 1st sample clotted! After 2 hours then only they informed! rclxub.gif

i suggest you all do your maths carefully....15k extra doctors by 2020 means 10 years from now, ie, 1.5k doctors a year. assuming half of the new doctors leave the public sector (lately, it's less than 1/2), you will need 3k/year.......

even at least years production numbers, this number is already exceeded........this year and the next few years, based on the numbers currently studying medicine, between 4k-5k new doctors will start work.....if we take the lower figure of 4k, and 2k stays on in the moh, the number of 15k will be reached by 2017, or earlier if the numbers graduating increases.......

you don't turn off a med school like a tap.....they will continue to churn out doctors, and there will not be enough jobs for them....

this scenario is real.....

as for the masses coming back from overseas.....the majority will be from russia, which is cheaper than local ipts med schoosl.....

1. those standing by are likely medical students........

2. it is well proven, more doctors does NOT necessary improve services, nor improve quality (the reverse is the case when quality is compromised)..........

standing by? Ya chit chatting.

You know at that time got one 'doc' see the reading off a machine that register the blood pressure. The reading was about 174 and 145, he seek advice from another 'doc' and was suggested to give the patient something to reduce the pressure. Later after the injection the reading is STILL the SAME! Cos the machine is faulty! laugh.gif

If half were to go, we have only abt 1,562 ex overseas graduates.

foreign cheaply trained doctors(russia, indonesia, bangladesh, other unrecognised places) will not decrease, unless either the cost goes up significantly, or the gov de-recognise them (like they did for crimea), so expect another 1k-2k/year from out of msia....

With one stroke of the pen, Indonesia can be de-recognised, considering the increasing tensions and the "hardships" created for rich Malaysians who are "maidless" now.

Russia, not likely in the near term as we are exploring trade opportunities with them while Bangladesh can be dealt with either way as they need us more than we need them.

In the worst case scenario of oversupply, we can "export" our doctors like Myanmar is doing.

Not so bleak lah!

It is not easy to de-recognize a med school and if they did there'll still be a 5-6 years delay in enforcement. Many students and parents will foul cry and all and certainly the government doesnt want to lose any possible support/vote for the coming GE. Not so simple aye.
