Well, Monash is still one of the top unis in the world, I mean top 50 at least. It's reputable for their business faculty and their medical faculty has a long history. Some people choose the more famous unis because of fame/glory; some just feel that the teachers there are better, or that the certificate will be much more useful. They all are true to a certain extent, but if you ask me to fork out 100k for that extra bit, I won't do it.
*
not really.....

monash is somewhat overhyped.....while it is mostly ranked top 100 (some tables have it in 3 digits), it is never really in the top half.........

it is a relatively new university, being founded in 1958, and only took the first intake in 1961........about the same time as the establishment of the new campus of university of malaya in KL, which eventually became the main um, after dissolution and formation of university of singapore.....the medical faculty of um was formed in 1964, so both med schools are about the same age...

so is the utas med school, also established in the 60's.......and utas has a much older history, being incorporated in 1890.......australia as it is now did not exist at that time.....

Just because it's in the Go8, that's why most people tend to opt for monash first than UTAS maybe? To be honest, our faculty here is really nice too. I'm not sure how are the facilities and lecturers like in Monash though.
When MS2 is completed, all the teachings will be done there. MS1 will be used for Menzies research.

i presume you are back in hobart and starting year 3 tomorrow.....?

Well I should add on that I've actually applied to IMU during my undergrad years but they didn't accept my pre-U qualifications, even with the Biomed degree from Melb U they needed me to add on an extra year to do Honours.

that is because, unfortunately, for most of the graduate entry-pms, they specifically want the imu bmed sc, so another prior degree from elsewhere is useless......

Yeah I get what you mean, that's why it's made kind of difficult. It's weird though, I mean it's just another avenue for them to make more money, why wouldn't they accept more students with equally qualified qualifications as the BMed Sc?  unsure.gif
*
because this pathway was designed specifically for undergraduate entry students who wants to go to the graduate entry-pms....and the extra year for bmedsc satisfies the rules of these unis.....

actually, if you don't mind being narrowed down, uq and warwick will accept you 1st degree..... smile.gif it's only anu, sydney and melbourne that are fussy...... biggrin.gif

The fees at Perdana is nearly ridiculous, RM1 Million...! Got my eyes popping when I first did the math. And..yup! You're right about mostly Canadians making up the International students numbers, probably a quarter of Internationals are Singaporean students though. That's the closest it can get to home I guess! And yup, I am reasonably aware about the upcoming medical student tsunami, especially in NSW if more than any other states in Australia. However I wasn't informed about that by the University, all I got from them was a statement saying that they are currently "trying their best" in fighting for guaranteed internship training for all International students and they foresee that'll become possible when we graduate, nothing more than that. I got to know about the issue from the PagingDr forum, which was a really useful resource imo.

Just wondering, which uni are you from?
*
there are lots of canadians in uq and jcu as well.....

are you sure sydney actually say they are 'trying' to guarantee internship places?......the standard response, afaik, is the disclaimer 'the university is not responsible for arrangement of internship after graduation'.......i don't think any oz uni can make any kind of guarantee at the moment, as this matter is beyond their control.......

each med schools is tied to a local health trust/authority.....and graduates will normally apply and be accepted into the region's health trust, and rotated through the nhs hospitals within that trust.....it thus does not matter really, which med school you graduate from....the majority of new doctors do not compete with graduates from other areas....

however, beyond fy2, entering the ct/st years, your references (from the fy years), intercalated degrees, papers presented/published, and having honours will determine your chances....and potentially, which uni you go to may have some bearing...but minimal.....

the best judge of the quality of a med school is by the quality of students it attracts and eventually selects....

in that respect, all the uk med schools will want aaa for entry...so there isn't a lot of difference....(which is not saying much, as 25% of students gets aaa anyway, ,and they use ukcat/bmat and interview/personal statements to differential)........

the british is already clueing on the fact that they can gorge more fees from international students by charging full clinical fees for the pre-clinical years....like what oz has been doing....

east anglia has been doing this since they started, as their programme is a fully integrated one, with some clinical exposure from year 1....thus they use this as an excuse to charge full clinical fees for all 5 years.....

expect more and more british med schools to stop the practice of charging normal fees for pre-clinical years.....

Was talking to a MUFY JPA scholar today. She told me that in her batch, some didnt manage to get the score required or failed the interview or didnt get enough IELTS score for Monash Sunway MBBS admission..

Quite a sad scenario for all of us taxpayers.....
*
it is common knowledge that in the imu-pms stream, there are many scholars, and in the killer eos2 where 20% of students fails, they are over-representated....

From the business point of view, is this an indication that supply of mbbs seats by Monash Sunway exceeds its demand ?

Time to cut tuition fees ......  ohmy.gif
*
supply definitely far exceeds qualified applicants as per clayton level requirements....

they will just scrape lower in the barrel till supply is met by demands....

all the ipts med schools do that....until mmc throws a spanner into the cogs by imposing minimum grades.... biggrin.gif

Will the research year enable you to graduate with honors?

So "equal opportunity" does not come into play in Oz, as far as internships are concerned. 350 intl students fighting for a few spots does seem bleak.
*
equal opportunities assumes equals.....

as foreigners, international students are NOT equal to local citizens and pr's (NO country does that in the world).......therefore, it is fallacious to use the 'equal opportunity' argument here......

Was talking to a few friends during orientation. All are unaware of the limited internship opportunities, thinking that they can just work in Melbourne after finishing their degree here.

I was like. urhmmm yeah. Didnt want to break their fragile little bubbles biggrin.gif
*
ignorance is bliss.....

but 5 years is a long time away, and it is possible political efforts by medical students unions, ama, and other vested bodies may prompt the fed and state governments to increase housemanship places.....there were some regional newspapers articles addressing this issue, and saying other countries, notably singapore and nz are stealing aussie trained doctors, and oz needs to do something about this.....

the special category of monash msia graduates needs to be re-evaluated, as per some commentaries.....the current practice is group them together with other international students who studied on shore.....

there were arguments to put onshore students ahead of monash msia graduates, which some consider same as img.......

time will tell.....

There's about 10 Malaysians among the international MBBS freshies in Clayton, including the top student from Sunway Taylor's SAM program. There's also one JPA scholar, 5 MUFY (onshore) students, one VCE Yr 12. Students from Singapore make up nearly 30 apparently. O week sounds like a carnival!
*
sunway and taylor's are completely different establishments.......

many jpa/mara scholars earmarked for australia do NOT get places and end up elsewhere.....

Don't forget Singaporean students make up like a third of the international students in Clayton. wink.gif
*
singaporeans (including non singaporeans who studied in spore) make about half of internationals in utas.....several with multiple offers, but choose to take utas for cost reasons......

I personally know less than 5. This is excluding seniors not in my batch, whom are most probably JPA scholars (July 2010 intake, mine was Jan/March 2011 intake). All the MUFY students I know are self-sponsored.

Limeuu was right on the 'bottom of the barrel' statement. Met someone with borderline MUFY score, borderline IELTS, borderline interview and less than 20% ISAT sweat.gif
*
it is for this precise reason, that my respect for monash has gone south.....if they are willing to compromise their standards for the sake of money, like all other ipts in msia, then they are no better than the likes of mahsa, cucms, masterskill etc.....

and if they are willing to allow such wide disparity between their clayton and sunway programmes, it makes a mockery of their assurance in their website about 'the same high standards of both clayton and sunway pragrammes'.....

in the first few batches, their selection was stricter than imu-pms......now it's the reverse.....

I thought JPA n Mara are allocated fixed no of places n the best of the lot took up the places.
*
there was a time in the past, where there was an arrangement with several oz and nz unis for 'guaranteed' places for their scholars.....ie, jpa/mara 'buys' say, 5 places....and decides who gets selected.....

this arrangement was extremely unpopular with both local as well as full fees paying international students, as many were obviously sub-standard when compared to what the rest need to be to enter.....

i believe this arrangement is ended.....and all scholarship students now need to compete with all other international students for the quota of full fees places......

the result is that many scholars with 'uk, oz, nz' scholarships did 'not fly'.......their slang for getting a place and flying off......

afaik, there is no scholar in the current utas cohort.....

nus only takes in 250 students, from a total population of 5 million....(that is like uk taking in 3000 (instead of 6000 currently) or oz taking in 1000 (instead of 2500 currently).....which means you really have to be the real top to enter....

you don't need to be so, to do well and excel as medical students and doctors....

these so called nus rejects will in many cases, do better than their peers in uk/oz med schools.....

There was a time when us/nus admitted many msians to their medical programme, in the 70's and 80's....some years up to a third.....it was partly by design, to attract the best talents......all students must take a scholarship that bonds them to spore for a few years.....most stayed on...and many are now successful private doctors, or hold high positions in restructured hospitals/academia.....

That changed in the 90's......when spore became an attractive place to work in it's own right......they realised they can continue to attract msians....without needing to spend any money to educate them......their parents, or the msian taxpayer will pay.....

They still actively recruit such free talents.......they regularly send recruitment missions to various western world cities and unis to 'steal' these doctors.......and the recent recognition of um and ukm is also aimed at this.....

and a section of msian parents will gladly donate their children to singapore....

training and experience are NOT qualities the young can acquire quickly.....so no, the practice of medicine is still very much a skill acquired from the sifu....ie the senior doctors....

but i personally do not think spore is a good place to live, bring up family, and retire....i had the opportunity, but declined.....but hundred of thousands of msian think otherwise.....then again, i also had the opportunities of working both in uk and oz, and also declined both, so i guess i am not a normal msian..... smile.gif
