Hey guys i need some opinion on which flash to get. It'll be my first external flash. Since SB800 has been discontinued, there's only two choices left, SB600 and SB900.

I've been doing some research and found that some people recommend getting two SB600 over one SB900, some recommended the SB800 over SB900(when SB800 was still in production), some say get the most powerful one. rclxub.gif

I'll be using the flash for normal usage like events and portraits, stuff like that. I also like the multi angle rotating flash head of the SB900. Also, if i would wanna play with Nikon CLS, would my built in flash be sufficient to be the master?

Also read complains about the SB900 overheating very easily. Any flash owners here that can help me out? unsure.gif

Thanks biggrin.gif

Havent really tried CLS out yet but i think it's quite cool. Although i might say that i wont be doing a lot of photoshoot that i'll be placing flashguns here and there. More of a walk and snap person if u know what i mean.

If i use CLS with my built in flash as commander, will the flash actually goes off together with the remote flash? So there will be two source of flash light?

oh ya that's what i heard also about overheating while using TTL mode. Is there a flaw in the way it choose its flash power in TTL mode? For newbies like me, prefer to use auto TTL. Does the new SB900 firmware solve the problem? (edit: just saw the last two posts. anyone can confirm less overheat for SB900 after firmware upgrade?)

Is the SB600 power sufficient for indoor event coverage and maybe day time fill flash? Because this would be a one off buy, not planning to sell off this unit in the future. tongue.gif

It's funny to see most of the users here have no overheating problem or at least got the problem solved after installing the new firmware.

I think it comes down to how much flash power is being used and maybe because there's a temp. limiter function in the SB900, so it makes it like it keeps overheating.

I've tried using Canon 580 EX II speedlite, quite happy with the performance. So does the SB900 heats up as fast as the Canon? Im just worried after i get the SB900, end up potong steam only.

On another note, just wanna ask, if i use my built in flash as commander, will the working range from my position to the remote flash be less compared to if i use a SB900/600 as commander because it's brighter. Since if i understand correctly, CLS works by sending flash light correct?

Thanks smile.gif

What type of rechargeable batteries you guys use for you external flash?
These days there are Low Self Discharge type such as Sanyo Eneloop but those batteries typically have a capacity of 2000mah only. Whether i use a 2700mah or 2000mah battery, should not affect flash recharging time right?

Any recommendations? biggrin.gif

i thought mAh is the capacity of the battery as in how much juice it can store rite?
cycle times are more affected by the voltage. rechargeables is 1.2V, normal alkaline cell is 1.5V and the panasonic ones like the evolta are 1.7V when fresh.
There's another panasonic battery which are specially for digital cameras also but it was famous before evolta came out. it came with my panasonic dmc lz2 but i forgot already.

edit: ahh yes.....i remember already....its the panasonic oxyride. it's rated at 1.7V when new.

I was thinking of i have a lower capacity battery, then it'll run out of juice quicker and therefore result in lower recharging time? Since voltage would drop slightly also.

Anyway, is there a lot of difference between the Low Self Discharge batteries and those normal NiMH high capacity battery? I know Sanyo Eneloop 4AA + charger is around RM140.

Hi, any of you guys using a hand strap for your D90?? Something like Nikon's AH4? I remember using my friends 450D + 580 EXII flash and my hands got real tired very easily from gripping the camera which was top heavy and had a small size body.

Was thinking that the hand strap might help but im afraid it might bring some inconvenience by tangling up.

Same here, don't feel comfortable with it as well  hmm.gif
Yea that's what I thought too. Anyone here using 3rd party neck strap? Saw one usa brand OP/ sth sth, and those made by neoprene. Are they any more comfortable than stock nikon strap? I read most 3rd party strap are for heavy pro camera. D90 considered heavy? tongue.gif

I've been using it and quite impressed actually. I had never encountered any problems by the third party BG and I'd strongly recommend this as the alternative?.
Thanks for the input. I guess i'll get the phottix one and save some $ for a 50mm icon_rolleyes.gif

Any of you guys seen Jenny Sun's work? She's a Malaysian wedding photographer that's based in Sydney Australia.
Jenny Sun

Im just wondering how does she get the colours for most of her photos? Especially the very vibrant and saturated ones. I noticed she likes to use the light beams from the sunlight and incorporate that into her photos. Any ideas how she get those colours? drool.gif
