New release: Zork: Grand Inquisitor

QUOTE
Today we’re releasing the last installment of the Zork series. As they say, third time’s a charm, The Grand Inquisitor is the third part of the graphical Zork games and surely the best. By far the best one in terms of being accurate to the original Zork adventures with its surreal, silly humor and the pop culture references that leave you smiling when you encounter them wink.gif

Zork: Grand Inquisitor is set in the Great Underground Empire where an ex-student of the Magic University takes over the whole country and implements a totalitarian regime banning magic as a whole. The dictator is the titular Grand Inquisitor who seeks to shun magic, shun the appearance of magic, shun everything, and then shun shunning. The Grand Inquisitor takes a unique view of how to shun someone with the aid of “swift totemization” by courtesy of Frobozz Electric, a process that, trust us, you don't want to go through. The people of Quendor need a hero to relieve them from the dictatorial regime! You are AFGNCAAP. "Ageless, Faceless, Gender-Neutral, Culturally-Ambiguous Adventure Person" which happens to be the hero in most of adventure puzzle games, as well as in Infocoms original Zork games. You meet Dungeon Master Dalboz who gives you the quest to find the three legendary artifacts (one of the Cubes of Foundation, the Coconut of Quendor, and the Skull of Yoruk) required to bring back magic and put an end to the Grand Inquisitor's regime.

The graphic side of Zork aged very well and with the use of real actors for its cut-scenes, Z:GI has nothing to be ashamed of. Superb music and ambient sounds would be enough for many games, but Zork: Grand Inquisitor takes things a step further be being one of the first games to offer full closed captioning so the hearing impaired can enjoy the game to the fullest. Don’t wait and grab the last installment of the Zork series for $5.99 DRM-free only on GOG.com.

QUOTE
You’re Michael Arthate, a young aspiring horror writer seeking a new hermitage to lay low and finish your second novel. The home for a terrifying enigma, the Blackwood Manor is rumored to be haunted by restless spirits of the dead...or worse! Isolated in your retreat, you have to face the echoing aftermath of the horrible past that happened in here. The telephone being your only link with the outside world, you have to penetrate the house to uncover the whole story and escape alive.
GOG presents you Scratches Director's Cut, which featuring remastered sound and graphics. On top of that you can play through the game in a different way to achieve the alternate ending and see how the Blackwood Manor deteriorates just before being completely destroyed. Scratches features first person view and gorgeous pre-rendered backgrounds which create a really creepy and eerie atmosphere that will make you check under your bed for monsters, and will make you want to sleep with your night light on! New release: Battle Isle: The Andosia War

QUOTE
We are on Chromos - it is the year 345 of the New Age.

The Emperor Wars are now only legends; the catastrophe of Scayra seems forgotten. Under the leadership of an alluringly mysterious figure, the sect of the "Children of Haris" is founded on Merth. Its motto: Peace through War! Its goals: the dissolution of the corrupt system on Chromos and the establishment of the dictatorship by its charismatic high priestess!

This is how the story begins in Battle Isle: Andosia War. It takes place in an archipelago which is divided into two kinds of islands. The titular Battle Isles are the ones which armies fight over and soldiers die over, the economic isles are to provide troops and support for the fighters on other islands. The combat system is the good old turn based combat mechanic, continuing the time-tested system from earlier parts of the series. The game economics have been rebuilt and improved, and are now real-time. There are quite a few resources to enrich the building of your facilities, research new units, and develop your economy even further! Troop training is also done via the economic part of the game and also takes place in real-time. All those preparations are just the appetizer before the armies get on the battle isles and the war starts! The magnificent 3D graphics create rich environments and bring a new tactical element to the Battle Isle series with Line Of Sight and elevation changing the ebb and flow of combat..

Grab the fourth installment (fifth if you count Incubation tongue.gif) of the great Battle Isle series, Battle Isle: Andosia War, DRM-free for only $5.99.

The game is played in a 2D isometric view and features beautifully-drawn historic and futuristic styles, with colorful and high resolution textures. Choose from over 40 pre-designed scenarios (including those based on real countries f.ex. USA, UK or Canada) and five difficulty settings to accommodate any playing style. Is EA planning a new Alpha Centauri game?

QUOTE
According to two registered trademarks, EA could be planning a new game for the Alpha Centauri franchise.

The cult turn-based strategy series hasn't seen a new game since Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri was released for the PC in 1999. In 2009 the EA owned trademark expired, but these newly registered trademarks by EA have sparked speculation from fans that a new title is expected to be announced soon.

QUOTE
The first trademark is for computer game software, the second is for online computer games. Both of these were registered on 1st August in the US, and then later a trademark was filed for Alpha Centauri in Europe on 2nd August.

Fans are speculating that this could be an iPhone game or a new Facebook version, but there's a chance that EA could be planning something PC or console related. What would you take a guess on?

We'll contact EA to see if we can find out more.

MDK2 HD arriving 'this September' on Beamdog, former BioWare dev's service

user posted image

QUOTE
Roughly a year after being announced, and just 4 months after parachuting onto WiiWare, the PC re-release of MDK2, titled appropriately enough MDK2 HD, has a release date of "this September." The port of BioWare's classic sequel is being handled by former BioWare co-founder Trent Oster's Beamdog outfit, under the name Overhaul Games. The release itself will be hosted on the Beamdog digital distribution service, which beams (dog?) games to your computer, with no installation needed.

This HD-ification is being handled by Oster and other "BioWare veterans" like Cameron Tofer, Russ Rice and Sean Smailes, "who were all heavily involved in the development of the original." Oster says, "MDK2 HD really is a labour of love for us. We've spent a lot of time improving the visuals and gameplay, and we can't wait to see what people think!" To that end, the developer is looking for suggestions from fans on what they'd like to see improved.

Don't have any suggestions? Never played the original? That's okay. Tofer, COO at Overhaul Games, says, "We think MDK2 HD has the sort of visuals, humor and great gameplay that can draw in not only existing fans of the game, but a brand new audience that just wasn't able to experience its magic the first time around." You can find out this September, for $14.99.

Rumor: Syndicate reboot at Gamescom

QUOTE
For the past few years, it has been rumored developer Starbreeze would be working on a remake of the classic Syndicate. The original game was released back in 1993 for the Amiga and MS-DOS, in which players would go on a series of missions for a corrupt corporation.

Starbreeze, who worked recently on the Chronicles of Riddick games, has been reputed to be working on the remake under the codename Project Redlime.

Well, a tweet from a Redbreeze employee declared, “Grand moment approaching. The reveal for Starbreeze and EA’s Project Redlime. Time to meet the press.” The tweet was quickly deleted, but it seems that a Syndicate remake could finally be making its debut at Gamescom.

Sigh... sometimes I really pity these digital distributors. If they sell the game expensive, gamers go rage. If they sell the game cheap, gamers still go rage. doh.gif
