mind to show us a cpuz screenshot? i guess the earlier stepping of i5 is the same as i7 C0/C1 which requires more voltage to reach a certain clock speed tongue.gif

cpu-z shot as requested. using gigabyte ud4p and first attempt to take it to 4 gig resulted in a complete raid failure and losing my windows vmad.gif
another problem is im using a coolermaster tx3 to cool it .. since cant get my hands on anything else at the moment.

occt has ibt built in but dont really wanna do it yet without better cooling. max temp recorded was 80, cant really expect a lot from a tiny CM TX3.

most stressfull is prime95 x64 25.9 blend 5.4gb in windows diagnostic mode
u need to pass min 8-12 hours

take note u can pass linx even 100 runs but will fail the above

y u think in xs less than 20 ppl only has posted in the thread... its that hard.. as it will cycle ure pwm's capability
linx stress is like a off and on switch every 4-5 minutes..
the above is talking 8-12hours straight 100% load

cstkl, sry for out topic question and a bit noob... issit the theory u mentioned apply to i7 as well rite ?

cause linx is load, then idle a while load again.. while p95 take ur cpu 100% for few hours...

if u read all, only one of them have his mobo and cpu survived. the rest weren't that lucky. so i guess this has to do with the vss and vcc connection eh. plus too much pressure from the cooler that causes the problem?

for high mem clocks
cpu tweaker doesnt help
other than helping tweak the main timings

the subtimings doesnt do much good other than rtl's
and rtl's is based on voltage ratios and dram chipsets.

Careful people, you don't want to burn up your CPU and Motherboard together. Affects boards with Foxconn sockets.

The issue is with the socket, not the chip. I feel weird too because Foxconn has been making sockets for so long but stupid things happen sometimes I guess sad.gifq

yah from a new consumer point of view, we may think that it is simply the socket's problem. LGA1156 CPU has 175 pads for VCC and LGA1366 CPU has 250 pads for VCC. Imagine that the power draw that the LGA1566 requires is the same as the LGA1366, how much stressed would be placed on those smaller number of VCC/VSS pins contact on the LGA1156.

but however they found out that it all happened to only FOXCONN socket, but not to another manufacturer LOTES (used mainly by evga). apparently is due to some pins not in contact at all! now foxconn is well aware of the issue.

2.8ghz with turbo on btw..(settings still all stock.. dare not move on till i know that the temps are safe) and ive resat the heatsink and tried another method of applying the TIM.. temps down by 2 degrees :/

*edit* finally got the hang of OC-ing the i5.. did 3.49ghz on stock voltage with load @ 60C XD... tho i dont wanna increase the voltage much as it will affect my monthly electric billzz (learned it the hard way)

turn off dosent have any effect.
not sure why u need to turn off since it is an extra 133mhz free.

maybe can turn it off by turning off the turbo boost in bios.
here ~ http://www.bit-tech.net/hardware/cpus/2009...s-core-i5-750/1

the temp will remain the same.
my processor last time idle also 49 and load up to 79.
so it is the same.

recommended to just change the cooler.

Whats the best oc for i7 860 has anyone achive?
Want to see the setting and temp.

Ts. You should do a oc database like the AMD thread.
At least we refer for reference.

the i5 stock cooler is really like a slice of bread over the processor :/ ... so far.. there aint many after market cooler around yet.. tho i realized that those push-pin type mounts on the LGA775 holes can cover the small the gap on the i5's mounting holes... thus.. you can actually throw on a xigmatek s1283 on the i5 system by removing the stock push-pins and replace them with screws smile.gif .. i did the same to my sunbeam CCF (drilled bigger holes on the mounts)

3DMark Vantage :

P12743
GPU Score 12691
CPU Score 12901

PCMark Vantage :

8159 Overall Score

I'm still looking around for comparison so i can tweak it. But i feel there is something wrong wit the CPU Score...

i tried other setting after i posted here.. seems like i CAN reach 1600 using higher ram multiplier just not at 200bclk

my proc seems limited to 180bclk@1.3v
pushing vcore any higher doesnt seems to make any diff. just to make sure vtt, pch n vpll is not limiting factor, i've also increase those to the max safe level i can get them too. Still ntg. i was wondering weather QPI is limiting my oc. since the higher bclk i go the higher QPI clock also...

yea.... im looking into that now. i updated my bios to the latest v1.5 already.

here is the setting im having on it, those i can remember anyway (im at office now)

max cpu multiplier x20
max qpi multiplier x16 and x18

eist, cstate, c1e, turbo boost disable

ram timing 9 9 9 24 59 1T

there are few more setting on the memory page but i cant seems to find a setting for them out there.

tonite i going home to lower down all the volt to a stable setting, drop the ram multiplier and have another go at the bclk

one question.. multiplier x21 not available for selection ar?

I did a little more tweaking just now. Now its running 3.6Ghz@180x20 on stock setting. I bump Vtt a little to 1.15v when windows hang during prime95. Ram at 1440Mhz@1.65v with loose timing just in case. Im running prime now. Will check if got error when i get back home later today....

Im still searching for software to report voltage. Non seems to work for me in win7. The MSI control center report at 1.78v regardless of how much i lower. It only show different reading once i push above 1.8v. So now im not sure is it a bios fault or the software fault...

for your information, msi, asus(except ROG), gigabyte board do not have the chipset to monitor the voltage of vdimm, vtt and such, so no software will able to read the voltage.. only the software come with the mobo able to read, and it just report the value u set in bios, it might have a big difference from the actual voltage.

Thanks.. i think tht is the case as i cant find any software tht can report voltages to me except vcore. Only the MSI control center could. So there is no where for me to double confirm the readings

After more testing. I come to the conclusion that my rig cant support bclk above 180 with ram ratio 4. Means i max out about 180 x 20 @ 1440Mhz which is about 3.6ghz. I have no idea what is the problem.

If i test seperately:

bclk
max out about 210 wit ram at ratio 3@1260Mhz

memory
max out about 170 wit ram at ratio 5@1700Mhz

I just cant make them work together...

Now im running a compromise of 3.9ghz @ 205x19 @ with 1230Mhz ram.... such a waste.

ya, cause cpu voltage reading is build in the cpu..
that a downside for a good board sad.gif

did u disable c states... c states cause my pc to hang sometimes when idle.

if u already touch c states to disable. then try to up ur VTT by 0.025v but keep below 1.35v.

yup.. same p55 gd65 bios 1.5. I think this bios is abit cacat, but its just a hunch. I cant seems to find anything to support it thus far as the resources regarding this mobo is few.

But in my case my proc cant reach 4ghz. I personally thing its the proc problem. I doesnt want to touch 4ghz no matter how much i gave, and im not willing to gave it 1.4vcore just to run 4ghz. Its not worth it just for the extra 100mhz. Max stable i could reach is 3.9ghz @ 1.35v. I was also unable to run bclk higher than 180 on this proc with ram multiplier 4 which is about 1480Mhz and above... no matter how much dram voltage or vtt voltage i gave it. I also up Vpll and PCH voltage too.. nothing. So my ram is just wasted. And also MSI Control Center report the dram voltage is 1.780 regardless of what i put in bios. It only changes when i go above >1.8v.

So honestly i dont know what is wrong. It could be any of it. Most probably the proc to me... coz the memory controller is now in the proc itself. So i guess the proc just doesnt like high bclk + high freq ram.

u can use msi live update to do the flashing. but reset ur bios setting to default first just in case.

whats ur bclk? try to lower down ur memory and qpi multiplier to the lowest. This will ensure this two is not the bottleneck. then slowly up bclk with the highest multiplier u can get.. which in i5 case 20x without turbo boost. then once u cant go higher, drop to 19x then try to increase bclk again. if still can not then up vcore. if vcore up and still not stable up vtt abit then drop vcore alittle. continue do this until u reach the limit. dont go above the vcore 1.4 and vtt 1.4 if ur on air cool. for me pll n pch voltage is default.

oh no wonder ur temp so low.. u use megahalem. i oni using cm 212+

my setting is:

3.9ghz @ 205x19 @ 1.35v

ram @ 1230Mhz 7 7 7 20 1T @ 1.5v (i doubt this is real)

ur ram multiplier might limit how high u can go wit ur bclk coz the ram will start to lock up if u run it too fast.
QPI is said to be link to bclk, so keep this low while oc'ing and once all done try to turn it to max. Mine is running at max speed

x4 means ur ram running at 1600Mhz if ur bclk is 200. This is perfect already. If u hav ddr3 2000mhz u can run at multiplier x5 to get that speed

qpi x16 is lowest. higher one is x18 i think... u can turn this up later once ur oc'ing is done.

i cant exactly tell u wut voltage u should use coz diff board is diff setting. and its actually odd multiplier. it was said odd multiplier can achieve high bclk.

200 x 20 makes ur ram speed 1600 if ur ratio is 4. u sure ur ram can o/c to 1600mhz or not first??

pch if i not mistaken is 1.05 oni for default rite? vpll is 1.8v default... for mine neither of this needed to be changed.

ur vtt also seems low... everytime ur proc lock up rite. if u up ur vcore by say, 0.5v already from previous setting. try up vtt by 0.25v.

the way ur oc i think is more important then hitting specific targets.

and yes.. mine is prime stable. Im using this setting now for my pc 24/7

each processor have it own stock vcore, try load the processor at stock clock and u can see what your processor vid.
if u load your processor at oc-ed speed, even u set auto in vcore, the vcore might not the actual vid of the processor.

yes, i5 default is 1.25v. try push vcore first with each increment of bclk. if vcore makes no diff then up vtt

how many memtest u run at one time?
did full coverage of ram?

Added on November 25, 2009, 8:37 ami mean how many instance of memtest?

coz usually error within the 1st 15min is caused by ram.

Actually to me rite~ the temperature is rather poor given that ur using watercooling. And 3.2ghz is not a big problem coz by default its supposed to run at max 3.2ghz wit one core anyway. on default voltage u can push it higher up to 3.5-3.6ghz

You need to increase voltage and others already
If still can't stable then you need to lower down your clockspeed

guys sometime my screen goes black for a sec then back to normal but before it goes black a single thin black line will appear vertically across my monitor, experience it a few times already.
GC prob? or RAM? my ram setting at bios is 9-9-9-20@1.65<-(the actual ram setting stated by the manufacturer was 9-9-9-20@1.7v)
should i set the vdimm to 1.7? btw my i5 is @3.8Ghz/Vcore is 1.33
hope pros in this thread can guide me on overclocking my i5. notworthy.gif

edit: no bsod, no auto restart, no hang apart from the thin vertical black line and screen goes black. pass 1 hour of linpack with no error,prime95 still running(about 1 hour+ already) and also OCCT.

this morning i did switch my GC slot coz i realize from GPUZ it only running at x8 hmm.gif i dont think this is the problem..
also stressing my GC using furmark for about 5 minutes no sign of artifact and hanging up.

dont know if there is...

but if u wan to upgrade i recon u mean buyin a whole new pc. coz impossible u upgrade from other i5 model... coz there are non. laugh.gif

anyway, to answer ur question, u should not look at i5 price. u need to look for the price of ram n graphic cards. coz this two item price has gone up. almost double for ram, and 10-20% more for graphic cards especially ATI gc. I would suggest to wait for a while if u can for this price to go down.

3ghz is quite low for i5. on default vcore ppl can easily get 3.6ghz. so i think for now if u really on budget then u can stay wit stock cooler. if the temp still consider high for u then just change to a cheap cooler like cm 212+. should be good enuf. its abt 100bucks nia...

the spec is 1.8v for the ram at tht speed. u try to lower down the volt ur ram might not be able to run at the stated speed. because all this 1.8v ram are actually o/c'ed ram. thier native speed are much lower.. mayb around 1333mhz nia

yup.. it default speed for my ram too. thts y i advicing others not to make the same mistake i did. 1156 was spec wit ram running at 1.65v. ram manufacturer now was force to come out wit 1.65v version to comply wit this standard. this 1.8v one are all o/c'ed version of slower speed. thts y they need 1.8 to achieve the claimed speed. u might as well be safe and run at 1.65v so at least u hav room to up the vdimm if nessasry. unlike us we are already at 1.8v. how much somemore u wan to up the vdimm? 2.0v? siao....

megahalems.. sad to say that 3.99Ghz@1.32v only last 1 hour + before it goes into BSOD on prime95. sad.gif
turbo boost on btw.

currently testing it again for the last time.
update: OCing with turbo boost on will result in BSOD after certain period of time sad.gif
idk if u were to increase the vcore with turbo boost on will make it stable and how much voltage it needed compare to turbo boost off at 3.99Ghz.

hmm after searching & googling i think turn off Turbo will not do any harm to ur proc laugh.gif ...

hmm still confuse about C1E & EIST....check my cpuz the vCore & multiplier not going down =.=...

it keeps at 1.248v & multiplier x20 all time....my temp all shows below 56c all the time....aiseh...no harm ka..

still confuse...some said off C1E only...some said turn off both....but is it true it will make the proc not stable if turn on both features?..

hmm im asking about lyn users experience...hope can tell a bit....thx ya! thumbup.gif

ppl only turn off those feature to get stable overclock. if u dont overclock u should on all this because it will help u safe on ur electric bill

swt.. y would they invent something tht can harm ur proc sweat.gif

EIST is same like turbo. Its also known as intel speedstep.

c1e is and advance c state. except c1e can also reduce voltage = save electricity

seems that its quite hard to make DDR1333 ram stable @DDR1600 hmm.gif
i got around 3000MB/s less on memory write and read when running @DDR1200 compare to DDR1600.
any pros here can tell me how significant that 3000Mb/s is?
im having hard time adjusting my ram @DDR1600.

I was trying to Oc my I7 860 to 3.8ghz. btw..my ram using corsair xms3 2gb x2..so, how far this ram can go? I still newbie with the oc things..how to tweak the ram more efficient? In bios, ram frequency dont have 1600, only 1440, 1800 and above..which one should i choose?

my setup will be 180bclk x 21 @3.78ghz

then you should not have any problem running it @1440.
try run memtest 1st before running prime95 after you adjust the timing and voltage.
refer Here for overview of ram timing.

im not pro in RAM overclocking, but i can tell that it depends on your ram chip, cooling or setting whether u can reach 1800 or not.
u can try though by adjusting timing and voltage,my DDR1333 seems to struggle even at DDR1600 which only last around 2 hour on prime95 before getting error but stable on memtest and IBT(10 loop@2047MB ram utilization).
whats your vcore anyway? your temp are very high.

vcore should be 1.278. i think the temp will reduce if use better fans..im using noctua fan at low speed..800-1000rpm only

yup biggrin.gif i even run IBT and memtest to make sure.
it was unstable at DDR1600 so i have to lower down the ram frequency and end up with DDR1200.
bios vcore is slightly higher than the vcore display on cpuz.

loosen your timing alot and decrease it bit by bit or run your ram with low frequency with tight timing then bro tongue.gif
idk if this will help how about disabling HT 1st until you find stable setting?

@jerrywan

to update d bios in dis board is so easy...u got ur live update installed[it should be included in the cd dat comes wit the mobo]..
after installed just search for the latest bios n donload[using d software]...
then just install like you install any other softwares through desktop....
**well i did the same thing so i expected it should be for you as well...

and for the oc part...i personally think dat temp is good already and very much normal....and the manual would be resulting better wit the newest bios[1.5] wit the vdroop control option...coz bios 1.2 dont have the option..
which need u kinda high vcore to stable...

***all the things i telling is based on my personal exp it may vary for pro/sifu oc'er...

well i dunno if i correct or not here...but based on my understanding....:-->

when u set:

vdroop high:--> thn the voltage will drop higher eg.frm 1.35v-->1.25v

vdrop low:-->thn tyhe voltage will drop lower eg.frm1.35v-->1.30v

try to set as low vcore as u can... now, im having prime on 3.6ghz, with vocre 1.18v(on bios, but show 1.22v on cpuz).. dunno why.. low vcore, u can get low temp..

~btw, on AMD platform, i think vcore below 1.5v is safe ...

about ram hv to ask sifu2 lol... but, i just set to 1200mhz since im just using kingston value ram 1333mhz.. scare if set to 16000mhz, will burn my ram..

Added on December 22, 2009, 8:34 amso, finally, i got 3.6ghz stable with 1.207v(on bios. 1.240v on cpuz).. but my temp very high.. btw im using hyper 212+ with 2 fan(2000rpm)

maxload around 80-82C(close side panel n without aircond)

maxload around 75-78C(close side panel n with aircond)

i think this its because of my thermal paste.. the CM thermal paste include in 212+ box doesnt look like thermal paste.. haha.. soo keras.. maybe will use tx3 later..

hmm..
i think thermal paste not a main issue...but cooler
the difference between best thermal paste and normal only about 2~3 celcius..

hyper 212+ not really a suitable cooler to tame overclocked i5/i7 smile.gif

LLC = load line calibration LINK
which means it disables Vdroop and make your power phases on your mobo handle the voltages. enabling this will cause what voltage you set in your bios appear the same in cpuz.. and it stays constant even on idle..

using this i hit 4.2ghz (210*20) with 1.35v though its a one hit wonder only... dont need that much power for 24/7 (3.0 is good enough for me XD)

Yes in generally
To be more specific,it depend on motherboard, bios, memory timing, uncore etc all play a part in affecting performance
If given all the factor are same then yes

OC-ing the i5 is a piece of cake lol... just turn off turbo, slap vcore to 1.4v.. lowest ram multiplier.. lowest QPI multiplier.. and push the BCLK slowly to find the sweet spot.. of course you need a good cooler to do that.. i dont think the hyper 212+ is really up for that task, but the sunbeam CCF made it to 4.4ghz (220X20) at the load of 75-80C

but of course 3.2ghz is good enough for everyday usage... lower electric bills... i even lower the voltage to 1.20 and made it run on 3ghz to make it save even more! biggrin.gif

oni core 1 reach 83c...
and d vcore is 1.35v...hehe
and ya, 3.6ghz is d sweet spot for energy saving and appropriate to cater most ppls needs nowadays...huhu

yea... i find that weird in the i5.. the first core is always hotter than the rest.. and it seems like in order for the rest as well..
core 1: hottest ,core 2 : cooler than core 1, core 3 : cooler, core 4 : coolest

resat the heatsink multiple times already and still yields the same result..

for me dont have to go all the way to 3.6 tho... 3.2 is the more than enough .. since now alot of apps has GPU acceleration ...aside from that, the temp is even cooler (makes my ambient cooler as well) the cores never hit beyond 60C haha

Yo TS, update the topic and add core i3 also tongue.gif

got my i3 530. maximus 3 formula and a pair of team extreem LV 1600mhz cl7 kit.

something to share :

1) Stock clock with 1m superpi...temp is really nice even im only using cm hyper 212+ tongue.gif
Attached Image

2) 1st attempt to oc and easily reachable to 4ghz @ 1.25v @ 1600mhz ( 2000mhz stable also). run LinX for 20 runs with no errors. temp was quit ok 70-72c top.
Attached Image

3) Tried 4.5Ghz @ 1.45v and run spi 1m. havent do stress yet coz the temp is kinda scary with hyper 212+.
Attached Image

from what i see, this proc is very2 ocable and have big potential to hit more then 4.5ghz on air. and of coz, need a good cooling biggrin.gif

4ghz mmg overkill utk apps skg. normal la clock high2 just for benchy/tweaking trying to reach the max out of it. thats the main purpose and kepuasan sebenar haha. for me la. klu just nak runnning normal apps tu 3.6ghz mmg da memadai huhu.

hi guys! anyone here reached 4.0 GHz on air for i7 860? please share some infos with me. i'm using a noob way of oc (oc genie). please mention ur cpu voltage and ur ram settings (speed, timing) also. my current oc (oc genie) yield about 3.5ghz (case open) and 3.4 (case closed). i know i can reach at least 3.8GHZ on this cpu with my aftermarket cooler. but i don't know how to oc this cpu. upgraded from q6600 used for about 1 year and oc to 3.4GHz on air.
