is an iphone 3g which is just unlock in the united state will be used with any provider in Malaysia? or should I buy turbo sim?

my friend have just unlocked his iphone 3g ver 3.0. then, after he sync with his laptop, the phone automatically lock. anybody know his prob? is the unlocked iphone cannot sync with itune to transfer songs?
