We can jailbreak the 3GS right now. But making our jailbreak public at this point in time would benefit relatively few people. It would in fact be detrimental to many more people than it would help. So we feel it’s best to keep our version of the jailbreak out of Apple’s sights for the time being.
Details:
If you already have a 3GS phone and have already done a full USB dump or captured your img3’s signed with your ECID, then you’re in great shape. You will always be able to jailbreak. But many people who plan on getting a 3GS do not yet have one. For instance, many people are waiting for their existing contracts to mature to the point where they get a price break on the 3GS. Many people are trying to sell their 3G before they can buy the 3GS. There are parts of the globe where you can’t even buy a 3GS yet! The reasons are varied, but they are many.
The nature of the 3GS hardware allows Apple to stop IPSWs from being usable unless you’ve already gotten the signed chunks they send to you based on your ECID (a unique chip ID). You cannot get these signed chunks without knowing your ECID, and you don’t know your ECID until you’ve bought your 3GS.
The jailbreak requires at least one signed iBoot-family img3 for your device. And that iBoot needs to have an exploitable bug. It’s an all-or-nothing deal…you either have your signed exploitable iBoot ready to use, for now and forever — always jailbreakable — or you have nothing.
Here’s the critical point, the reason why we’re delaying our version of the jailbreak: Once the jailbreak is out, Apple will fix the iBoot-family bug we use to accomplish it. They will simply stop signing the old iBoots and only sign the fixed ones. If you bought your phone after Apple has done this, there’s nothing you can do…the jailbreak isn’t going to work for you.
It is possible that Apple will find the bug we use without our handing it to them on a silver platter (via a public jailbreak). In that case, we will have delayed our jailbreak for “nothing”. But we’d rather be safe than sorry!
Apple is surely coming out with a 3.0.1 firmware release shortly. They need to fix ultrasn0w. They need to fix some UI issues. 3.0 is buggy and 3.0.1 is coming. We’re going to wait and see what 3.0.1 brings before figuring out the release date for our version of the jailbreak.
In the meantime, we have some remaining 3.0 jailbreak issues to investigate, including push notification. Thanks for being patient with us while we took a 3GS “timeout”!
Do not upgrade to 3.1 yet if you want this unlock!
Here’s a brief video demonstration by @planetbeing of the iPhone Dev Team’s ultrasn0w unlock for the new iPhone 3G S. Special thanks to @Oranav for the at+xlog crash — a gift to the community that has kept on giving! Our ultrasn0w program uses the at+xlog crash as an injection vector of our unlocking payload — and it does so on the 3GS in exactly the same way as on the 3G! But this injection vector will be lost if you update to 3.1 using the official Apple IPSW, which updates the baseband. So stay away from official 3.1 IPSWs until we release the tools that let you update the firmware without updating the baseband.
Guys If restore my Iphone 3g, do i nid to put to DFU mode?? After i restore and change the iphone name do i get all my music bac?? Can someone kind enuff to help??
as far as music, video, apps r concerned, u'll get them back even if u change ur phone name. Just make sure u tick da right tab. Ie., on iphone's page, click on music n check sync music n select ur playlist. Same goes for vids n apps
If it's on ur pc, I dun see a reason y it shudnt be. Tats whr it cm from in da first place rite. although I hv not tried doing it on a password protected phone.
Actually I thought of setting up as a new iPhone. But what about ALL of my datas?
Especially my saved games. SIGH
QUOTE(teikwing @ Jul 26 2009, 01:03 AM)
your iPhone apps and games are stored in a folder. you can re-sync them back. usually, the folder is located @ My Music -> iTunes -> Mobile Applications. or worst, you can re-download them.
its true tat the apps are saved...but wat he's trying to say is tat da saved games data wud be gone... ie, u may hv 50% of a game n now u hv 2 start rite from 0.. or if for apps, the login data, other settings wud be wiped out...

Augmented Reality Apps to Arrive with iPhone 3.1 Update
QUOTE
The L.A. Times reports that Apple will begin allowing developers access to the tools they need to produce augmented reality applications starting with upcoming iPhone OS 3.1. While there have been many impressive demos floating around showing the possibilities, these applications have used unpublished APIs which prevent them from being allowed on the App Store. Apple, however, told one developer that the tools necessary would become available with iPhone 3.1.
Apple told Acrossair, developer of the Nearest Tube train finder, that the app will be approved for distribution after Apple releases version 3.1 of the iPhone software, which the developer expects will land in early September. The New York City version of this app is called Nearest Subway and is demoed in this video:
Augmented reality uses the device's GPS, camera and digital compass to overlay real-time data onto live video. Other possibilities include iPhone games as well as the Layar browser we've highlighted before. iPhone 3.1 has been seeded to early developers but the exact release date has not been revealed.

As the title says, does anyone know of some good augmented reality apps that work in Malaysia (for iphone)?
I know UK and places in the US have ones that overlay maps to trains/subways, also some for giving more information on various food brands, ones for finding houses nearby for purchase/rental, augmented ID applications with face recognition software that supply you links to a person's twitter/facebook/etc (this one would actually work here at least).. quite a lot of interesting stuff.
I'm just curious if there's anything that has particular relevance to Malaysia, its landmarks, products, etc, or if if anyone knows of a really awesome AR app worth having that isn't region specific.
im trying to read up n follow these kinds of app, but so far the only one ive cm across is layar, and da subway for NY... these are all in beta and thr has been no news abt public offering for such apps... im too looking forward for these AR apps...
My facebook don't have push notification 1 wo. It is not listed in the settings, means it doesn't have. I only have Nimbuzz in the list and no other. Nimbuzz also cannot connect to MSN or anything so can't test also.

150 apps? Did you JB your phone? Are the apps you installed legit?
what does push notification do?? lets say if i login to ebuddy with iphone, do i need to keep ebuddy running on background to receive notification or I can turn off the program and still get notification if sum1 pm me??
if ur push settings are on, it;ll be like wat u said if u hv an IM app, u can sign in to ur im and press da home button 2 return to ur springboard... with push on, u'll get popup msgs, sound alerts and badges for tat app... ur im msgs wud be displayed like 'sms'... but mind it it'll drain battery n data charges...

Hi harmeet,
Thanks for clarifying. I must have gotten confused with unlocking - as far as I know, JBed and software unlocked iPhones won't be able to receive push notifications as it requires a unique ID generated during the iTunes activation (for officially unlocked phones).
yup..u got tat rite..i did read abt tat unique id.. but otherwise, jb phones no prob... mine works fine
Boy Genius Report has received several tips that Rogers Wireless, Apple's Canadian iPhone partner, is in the process of shipping an 8 GB version of the iPhone 3GS to its retail stores. BGR has also received several photos of what appear to be an internal memo in Rogers' retail computer system announcing the transition to the new model to staff members.
We've had a number of unconfirmed tips over the last few days about this so we figured we'd post it apparently it seems that Rogers in Canada is in the process of shipping iPhone 3GS 8GB flavor handsets to stores. Again, unconfirmed, no idea on pricing (we have no clue where to start on that) but we felt it was newsworthy to at least let you guys know what we're hearing. According to the screenshots, it appears that Rogers is attempting to sell through its existing inventory of the 8 GB iPhone 3G before transitioning to the iPhone 3GS as a replacement at the 8 GB level.
