For the benefits of those who do not subscribe to The Edge.
KPMG/The Edge Shareholder Value Awards 2008 - The Top 100 Ranking is based on the returns % as calculated by (Economic Profit/Invested Capital)
* Economic Profit = NOPAT - (Invested Capital x Cost of Capital) * NOPAT = Earnings before Interest and Tax - Cash Operating Taxes * Invested Capital = Total Equity + Total Debt * Cost of Capital = [After tax Costs of Debt x (Debt/Invested Capital)] + [Cost of Equity x (Equity/Invested Capital)]

Disclaimer: Past performance does not guarantee future performance.
Note: I think there are more than 1,000 companies listed in Bursa. Sometimes people do not know where to start looking or find good companies to invest in. I reproduced this list here so that these people have a starting point to find quality companies and can research more into these companies if they want to.
Don't blindly go dump all your money into BAT just because it is ranked #1. Rather you should to analyze the companies returns vs your cost of investment to find out if the purchase will give you the kind of returns that you want.
It is better to invest in companies with at least several years of rising or consistent EPS. The companies in this list might perform well for one year but perform poorly the years before 2008. Or their performance could be like a yo-yo. Therefore, it is important to do more research into these companies before buying into these counters.

You already got the August 24 edition? So fast? I don't subscribe to the Edge but I buy it at the magazine shop every week Thx for the info. Glad that I have Uchitec. Seriously planning to get some BJTOTO for dividend stock. Can't believe KNM is also one of the top 10??? I thought their dividend is quite low......

Looking at the formula used, there's no mention about dividend. I think this is a list of top companies that create values for shareholders. Half of my portfolio are invested in 3 of the top 100 companies.

Is it still relevant this year as they put the assessment as "2008"?

Thanks for the list. This is a test of profitability of biz model. A very useful guide but 2008 was a terrible year for shares. Defensive shares stand out unsurprisingly. KNM's 2008 profit was good. This list goes by book values, not market prices.
I think they use dividend as cost of equity which is minused from economic value, and from invested capital.

QUOTE(skiddtrader @ Aug 23 2009, 09:00 AM) This list is only for the companies they are auditing? Or overall market? Page S4: In the article "Methodology approach" subheader "Eligible Companies".... "The starting point is all companies listed on the Main Board and the Second Board of Bursa Malaysia as well as Mesdaq that are considered in the awards programme. In line with our methodology, a process of elimination is conducted to exclude companies that have not reported 12-month audited income statements falling within the calendar year of 2008, and audited balance sheets for a 12-month period falling within the calendar year of 2007 and 2008. Companies which made initial public offerings in 2007 and 2008 are hence excluded from the current programme on the basis of data availability. Companies that no longer exist at the date of results publication will also be excluded. The same exclusion is extended to any company that made public announcements of distress conditions, for example, PN4/PN17/GN3 companies. The exclusion of non-eligible companies is then followed by a classification of 568 eligible companies into one of nine award sectors or segments based on the companies' dominant lines of business or their core streams of revenue."

Are you sure its based on book value, the existence of cost of equity suggest that its based on market price. Anyway, will check this on Monday.

They use market value of the debt and market value of the equity for the calculation of cost of capital. However for invested capital, the use the average in book value.
