You might want to check out Bill Bryson "A short history of nearly everything". This book have won many awards. I found this book very entertaining~
Another 1 is "Why evolution is true" by Jerry Coyne, this book you can treat it as layman or academic reading. It has the facts but it rather make me feels like story-telling.
Another that my friend was recommending me to read is The fabric of the cosmos by Brian Greene, I haven't read it though
