Hi guys, and DIY experts,

I've been thinking of painting my gate. This is my first time and here's what my initial research lead me to.

1) Nippon 9000 undercoat
2) Nippon 9000 Gloss Finish
3) Go to a shop aka Ace hardware, and select a Nippon 9000 can (D-Deep, P-Pastel, etc) and mix in their machine for color.

Question:
Where's the best place to begin looking for Nippon paint? Ace Hardware does provide 15% discount though.

i was thinking of Dulux too, and their website is highly informative and impressive! Thing is, i understand that their pricing is also 20% higher than their competitors, hence i did not take their product seriously. However, do you think i should relook at it? Is it worth the effort? Or should i just consider other brands, even?

I like that idea, but i guess i want personal satisfaction from this too, hence the thought of doing this myself. *grin*

i definitely hope i dont regret there after!

The other things i need too are the following:
1) steel brush (to remove oil paint)
2) sand paper - anyone know what grit level?
3) touch up brush - 1.5cm, 4cm and 6cm
4) thinner (whats the diff with turpentine & spirit?)
5) loads of patience and energy

i use nippon paint for our gates. 4+ years already, still looks new.
but have to clean in 1 or 2 times a year, just wiping only. it's not self cleaning right?

we used ici for indoor and outdoor walls, but ground floor only lah.

Added on August 19, 2009, 10:05 pmb4 painting, especially old gates, sand it well. remove rusty areas, then use some coating before painting it.

the coating i forgot the name, long time d. and i do all myself. over a period over a month. i do on weekends only, when i felt doing it

That's good feedback! Good to know someone else has done this! very motivating indeed!

My renovation guy used a flat paint for my gate. Real problem. No wonder the paint didnt last.

Anyway, i'm all for a gloss finish, and Nippon looks like a good way forward.

I'll be using a steel brush to get rid of some part of the old paint. Then intend to remove rusty areas. How did you do it? Sandpaper or some machine? Do share the grit level with me yah!
