Commercially sold Blu-ray discs (BD) come in either 2D or 3D or 3D+2D on one disc (3D/2D compatible) and some combo sets have both 2D and 3D discs included. To play 3D BD, you'd have to get a Blu-ray player capable of playing 3D and a 3D TV for the display (and the glasses).

3D TVs generally are able to "convert" an image into 3D-like even if the source is 2D, however the effects is apparently not as impressive as playing a Blu-ray disc with the 3D picture on a 3D player and displayed on a 3D TV.

A basic Blu-ray player is usually a 2D blu-ray player, with a lower price tag of around RM300 or below. For the 3D feature, the price of the player would be slightly higher naturally. The 3D player is backwards compatible thus it plays both 2D and 3D discs.

The above applies to the playback of commercially bought Blu-ray discs. I guess that is one of the main reasons one buys a Blu-ray player. However, for video files, depending on the type of file you have and if they are in 3D, you may still be able to see it in 3D even without the 3D player, if you have a 3D TV.
