Fletcher: Defence will be key to United's defence
QUOTE
Darren Fletcher has predicted a more rigid Manchester United will be on show this season.

With Cristiano Ronaldo now settled in at Real Madrid and Carlos Tevez moving down the road to Manchester City, Sir Alex Ferguson has had a bit of adjusting to do this summer.

And, according to Fletcher, the outcome is an orthodox 4-4-2 formation that he believes will be good enough to terrorise opposition at home and abroad.

"We have always been tight at the back because we have a great defensive record but maybe we have been a little bit too expansive at times," he said.

"The ethos of the club is about attacking football. However, you can't be wide open and attacking all the time.

"You also have to be disciplined and I think you are going to see a more rigid 4-4-2 formation this season."

At Wembley on Sunday, Fletcher was right at the heart of that formation, partnering Michael Carrick in the centre of midfield.

Maybe it should not have been a surprise. For, as the close season dragged on, so Fletcher's abilities grew as reasons for United's lamentable Champions League final display were unearthed.

The inescapable conclusion to draw was that United were passed to death by Barcelona duo Andres Iniesta and Xavi because Fletcher was suspended for the Rome showdown, consigned there due to the needless red card he picked up when the semi-final at Arsenal was already won.

Not that Fletcher is about to let the adulation go to his head.

"The only thing people have said to me this summer is that United missed me in Rome," he said.

"It is nice to hear and I did feel I made a big step forward last season.

"But sometimes you become a better player by not playing. People notice you because you are not there. It is easy to sit in the stand. I was desperate to be out there."

Undeniably, last season's was Fletcher's best and most consistent.

The 25-year-old made 42 appearances last term and the vast majority of his contributions were telling ones in a season that ended with a third Premier League title if not a place in Rome.

"There are some great midfielders at the club but I managed to get into the team for the start of the season and stay there for most of it," he said.

"My performances improved because of the continuity of playing most weeks.

"Now I feel as if I am right in there competing for a place in the starting line-up each week, although I can't take anything for granted because there is so much competition."

Nani was subbed at start of 2nd half against Birmingham and then was not even on the bench last night. Any idea what might happen? Something to do with his shoulder injury?

Against teams like Burnley, Nani would had been a better bet than Park since we need his ability to try create something out of nothing. Park won't able to provide us that.
*
Fletcher wasn't on sub either. Same thing last week when PJS and Carrick werent on the sub during the match vs birmingham. Both of them weren't injured.

I think fergie rotated the midfield. Last week's Nani, Fletcher, Scholes, Valencia to this morning's Giggs, Carrick, Anderson, PJS.

I think we really need an out-an-out Attacking Midfielder...
Our Forwards department is strong enough with Roo,Berba,Owen,Kiko, and Welbeck.

Our midfield is now a little off. Pool seemed to have that problem in the first game but they can always rely on bar-brawler to come up with the goods.
For us, we have 2 wingers who still need to prove themselves in Valencia and Nani.
Then we have Fletcher,Ando,Carrick and Scholes in the middle.
Out of this 4,only Ando has the ability to be an AM behind the strikers but  doubt it'll work out well.

Any ideas on who can fill this Attacking Midfield void...?
*
Seriously we need a good box-to-box midfielder. Was hoping anderson to fill the gap but he has not meet the expectation yet. Darren Fletcher has limited attacking capabilities while carrick is more like a decent cm doing the passings all the time. I miss the old scholes wink.gif

Doesn't really matter even if we ain't got the title this season. I support the team and i love watching them playing. Anyway, this season will be a very tough one with emerging tottenham and splendid spending manchester city giving stiff competition to the "big four" epl clubs.

Btw, It's just our second match of the season. Don't give up and I'm looking forward to the third one. The thrill of it tongue.gif

Evra: I will be doing more attacking this season

Patrice Evra has revealed he is under instruction to get forward more often this season.

The Frenchman was noticeable as an attacking force during Wednesday's shock defeat at Burnley.

It was Evra who was brought down for the penalty Michael Carrick was unable to convert and he also sent over an early cross Michael Owen failed to turn home.

As one of the fastest players in the United squad - and someone who has played in midfield at times - it is natural for Evra to take up more attacking positions, especially with Cristiano Ronaldo no longer hogging the action.

"I have been getting forward a little more," said the former Monaco star.

"We always like to play with attacking full-backs but maybe this season we will see more of the left and right backs in the final third.

"When you had Ronaldo in front of you, sometimes it was just tempting to give him the ball because you knew he could make something happen.

"We would overlap at times but usually he could manage on his own.

"Maybe we will attack using more players - more like a team - this season."

The loss of Ronaldo is too fresh to make an accurate judgement on how United will manage without the Portugal superstar.

However, they do need to produce a greater threat to opposition defences than they have managed in their opening two games, starting at Wigan tomorrow.

The Red Devils boast a 100% record against the Latics and it will be interesting to see what formation Ferguson chooses, after electing to play Anderson in a wider role at Turf Moor.

Antonio Valencia seems certain to play against his former club, having injected a bit of life into United after being introduced as a substitute at Burnley.

Owen is less sure of his place after drawing another blank.

The former Liverpool star has not scored since United returned from their Far East tour, which must be a worry for Sir Alex Ferguson, whose assistant Mike Phelan admitted improvement is required.

"Their goalkeeper only made three saves in the entire game, which is not enough," said Phelan.

"We should have done a lot better and it is something we have to correct - and correct quickly."

If vidic's condition is so-so, at least let him play the last 20 minutes smile.gif.

But we'll see if fergie shall set him as first time lineup...and if his performance or condition isn't positive he shall be subbed out during second half.

Wigan vs Man United Player Ratings

Man Utd:

Foster: 7

Pulled a top-drawer save for Koumas' strike.

Neville: 6.5

Did not make much of an impact to be wearing the captain's armband.

Vidic: 8

Gave his usual solid defending for the Man United backline.

Evans: 6

Filling in for Ferdinand made good challenges to deny Rodallega.

Evra: 7

Ran rampant in the midfield and pushed forward to great effect.

Valencia: 7

'Booed' at every touch of the ball, the former Wigan winger gave an inviting cross for Rooney to finish.

Fletcher: 7

Had solid control of the midfield.

Scholes
: 6

Gave a lackluster performance and well-deserved a substitution.

Nani: 7

Out to prove he can fill Ronaldo's shoes, curled a free kick that gave the keeper no chance.

Rooney: 9

Denied in the first half time and again, but came out the break intent on scoring and was rewarded with two.

Berbatov: 7

Played further up front, and gave a beautiful finish to open his account for the new season.

Subs:

Owen: 7.5

Out to make his mark in Man U colours, finished cooly to slot home Man United's fifth.

Wigan:

Kirkland: 6

Made brilliant saves in the first half but was unable to stop the onslaught after the break.

Melchiot: 5

Did not manage to close down Rooney in the second half that led to United's third goal.

Scharner: 6

Gave too much space for Rooney and Berbatov to take shots on goal.

Bramble: 6

Like the rest of his teammates, gave a good showing but was unable to stop the United attack in the second half.

Figueroa: 5

Nervous throughout, Figueroa did not manage to settle in to the game.

N'Zogbia: 6

A chance went begging as the former Newcastle man hesitated in front of goal.

Thomas: 4

Practically invisible throughout the match.

Diame: 6

Gave a good first half but fell short in the second.

Koumas: 6

Made good runs down the flank, cut across Man U defenders with ease.

Gomez: 5

Managed to outmuscle Scholes to the ball several times - never an easy task.

Rodallega: 6

Made several good attempts on goal but was denied by Foster.

I would choose Jonny evans over John O'shea or Wes brown for CB position to partner vidic as i think he has done better in that position. JOS should be handling the right back smile.gif

Reserves: Bolton 1 United 3

United's Reserves made a winning start to the new league season, brushing off the challenge of Bolton Wanderers to post a 3-1 win at Leyland's County Ground.

Craig Cathcart headed United into the lead early on, only for Michael O'Halloran to level soon afterwards. Zoran Tosic nudged the Reds ahead again, however, before Sam Hewson made sure of the points late on.

There were also useful run-outs for Wes Brown, Darron Gibson and Danny Welbeck, all of whom completed at least an hour towards their early-season fitness levels.

Those experienced heads bolstered Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Warren Joyce's side. A week ago, an inexperienced United team won the Lancashire Senior Cup final at the expense of a Bolton side boasting 11 players with first team experience. Here, the roles were reversed as a young Trotters side took to the field.

United were ahead inside three minutes, as Cathcart rose to nod Tosic's corner inside goalkeeper Robert Lainton's near post. Parity was restored seven minutes later, however, as O'Halloran raced onto a Sam Sheridan through-ball and calmly converted.

Although the hosts enjoyed a spell of pressure, it was always United who carried the greater menace, with Josh King and Welbeck leading the line with great strength and verve, and the former laid on the second goal for Tosic just before the break.

The Norwegian striker pounced on a loose ball, steamed towards goal and pulled back from the byline. Although the ball was scuffed away from Gibson, Tosic was on hand to coolly outfox a defender and place his finish in the roof of the net.

Lainton was repeatedly called upon to repel the Reds throughout the second half, either side of a triple substitution in which Tosic, Brown and Gibson were replaced by Eikrem, Hewson and Stewart.

The latter drew a superb block from Lainton, who also excelled to keep out Welbeck and Eikrem with a fine double-save, before Hewson rose to power home David Gray's cross

United: Amos; W Brown (Eikrem 58), Chester, Cathcart, De Laet; Gray, Gibson (Hewson 58), James, Tosic (Stewart 58); King, Welbeck.
Subs not used: Zieler, Dudgeon.
