I see philosophy as a parallel universe, only this one is in the mind. It has many links to the physical universe we all live in but it has many links outside of the physical universe too.
Is something we could not name it, prove it or to acknowledge it....Is all about understanding....however, with a risk that one day we might reach our peak of our potential to fullly understand this existence

It is another kind of knowledge...arrangement of data we get knowledge...connection of knowledge we get equations (truth)
Equations i believe is another type of knowledge with higher level of complexity that create most of our acknowledge knowledge...Is something we could grasp a piece of it through understanding...but coulnt hold it tight

What philosophy do is try to connect everything together...to make sense of this highly immense existence...to contain this way beyond universe with mind.....to seek Another kind of status or position where we are in this existence

Our brain is the map of this existence...and philosophy help us to read this map or as well as to complete it

Added on August 4, 2009, 12:54 pmJust my defination...U can disagree with me....But plz post ur defination as well...I prefer ur own defination...Not the defination we found in wikipedia

Wikipedia defination:'Philosophy is the study of general and fundamental problems concerning matters such as existence, knowledge, truth, beauty, law, justice, validity, mind, and language. Philosophy is distinguished from other ways of addressing these questions (such as mysticism or mythology) by its critical, generally systematic approach and its reliance on reasoned argument. The word is of Greek origin: φιλοσοφία, philosophía, "love of wisdom".'

hmmm, that basically means that philosophy 'is a theory based on knowledge-gathering process that has not be proven yet as fact' ?

Does this 'philisophy' connects with those 'philospher' of the past such as Aristotle?

yes i will, usually what i do is discuss it with other philosophers around the world...exchanging idea and knowledge...i prefer this way of learning...I was once been a joke when i ask them which philosophy's book to read 1st... they said a piece of paper and pencil is way too good enough to start philosophy...Only when i have contribute my orginal thoughts then i will be good enough to start reading philosopher's idea...Because usually amateur of philosopher just tend to follow the idea of other philosophers before even construct their own thinking

It's kind of funny how you open a thread specifically for another person.

Well at least it's refreshing... to find someone who's mind does not merely echoes commonly accepted views.

I'd say philosophers don't let other people tell them what they should do or how they should think! Or course, most of the time they are also labelled as having very hard head biggrin.gif

Folks,

1) In order to talk about Philosophy, a person needs to be capable of THINKING.

2) Philosophy is the THINKING behind THINKING. It is the construction of a MODEL behind the THINKING.

3) Philosophy is the SEARCH for the answer of the 3 questions:

A) Cause -> Past

B) Existence (Being) -> Present

C) What it will be -> Future

4) For example, in term of time, Western Philosophy think in term of linear time. Eastern philosophy think in term of circular time. The model of thinking behind time is different.

5) As per (4), if you are NOT multi-lingual aka knowing a language beyond English, you CANNOT break the linear time model. In English, you have to THINK when something happened before you can even say about this. It is a linear time based language. Hence, it is VERY DIFFICULT to explain circular time in English.

6) Mandarin / Chinese is a language based on circular time. There are NO TENSES.

In this case, philosophy is a model on time and how time behave. Aka, the thinking behind the thinking. And, this model is used to construct language.

He means there must exist an understanding of the time of the incident before you can choose to describe them in either past, present or future tense.

For the Chinese Language, such steps are not necessary.

What the point of opening a thread when you want to discuss with a particular person? Isn't it better to PM or instant message with him?

communist892003,

What languages do you know??

Do you know Chinese??

In order for me to explain to you, I need to know what you know.

This is easy to understand for someone that know both English and Chinese.

communist892003,

Let's take a very simple example.

Say "Sky is blue" in English and Chinese.

In English,

"Sky is blue"

"Sky was blue"

and so on. You had fixed the time when sky is blue.

But, if you said it in Chinese, there is NO INDICATION of time when this had happened. In fact, time is IRRELEVANT.

As in EVERYTHING in English, it is VERY HARD to hard and said anything without knowing its place in time. However, in Chinese, it is the REVERSE. It is EASY to say something without specifying the time.

The language reflect the different philosophies. In English, time proceed linearly. You cannot go back. In Chinese, time repeat itself over and over again. Hence, in Chinese, history is studied extensively because its belief that event repeat itself.
