QUOTE(bgeh @ Nov 1 2009, 03:50 AM)
Not exactly - there are 'virtual' particle-antiparticle pairs that appear and quickly disappear into the vacuum, and there has been experimental confirmation for them (we did not observe it directly, but indirectly)

Welcome to the peculiar world of quantum mechanics, or probably quantum field theory to be more precise.

as Einstein once quote "I, at any rate, am convinced that He does not throw dice"

the pecularity of quantum field theory had always been mind boggling. However as recent progress shown at CERN might shed us some lights to better understand quantum field theory. If, those particle collider able to detect presence of Higgs Boson particle and existence of extra dimension, we just might be able to prove string theory. String theory does explains a little on quantum field theory which basically defining characteristic of a particle based on their vibration. String theory, I believed to be more likely characteristic of universe, as I, myself believe universe is not something happens by accident or by chance (all the building blocks of universe has to be exact). Quantum field theory suggest otherwise. It's unimaginable the probability our universe to emerge in the world of quantum mechanics.
