i dunno to post in which thread...so i guess to make new thread.... QUOTE Former England manager Sir Bobby Robson has passed away at the age of 76, having finally lost a long battle against cancer.
Sir Bobby Robson's last public appearance, at his tribute game at St James' Park on July 26.
Robson, who distinguished himself first during a lengthy tenure that put Ipswich Town back on the map with FA Cup and UEFA Cup wins in 1978 and 1982 respectively, took on the England job and led them to the semi finals of the World Cup in 1990.
A spell on the continent included jobs at PSV Eindhoven, Sporting Lisbon, FC Porto and Barcelona before a return to his North-East roots at Newcastle United in 1999.
The County Durham native was taken to the hearts of the Geordie nation as he led them back into European football while playing a brand of football that won the hearts of many a neutral. Robson's controversial sacking in August 2004 is often said to mark the beginning of Newcastle's current problems.
Robson was an England international as a player, where he served Fulham, West Bromwich Albion and briefly for the defunct Vancouver Royals, and featured briefly at the 1962 World Cup.
He had been a cancer sufferer for 18 years, suffering five different bouts of the disease. Last Sunday saw Newcastle United stage a charity game between former English and German internationals from his original 1990 World Cup squads and other special guests in aid of the Sir Bobby Robson Foundation.
"It is with great sadness that it has been announced that Sir Bobby Robson has lost his long and courageous battle with cancer," read a statement released by Robson's family. "He died very peacefully this morning at his home in County Durham with his wife and family beside him.
"Sir Bobby's funeral will be private and for family members only. A thanksgiving service in celebration of Sir Bobby's life will be held at a later date for his many friends and colleagues.
"Lady Robson and the family would very much appreciate it if their privacy could be respected at this difficult time."

Sir Bobby Robson was one of the nicest people in football, either as a former player or manager. Sir Alex rates him so highly that he has so much respect for him, this coming from one of the greats in football management speaks volume...
May God bless his soul...

This was his last public appearance photo of Sir Bobby at Newcastle United's St James Park: You guys can see clearly how ill he looks... But what amazes me was he was still able to lay a smile for everyone. A great man. This post has been edited by schmeichel7: Jul 31 2009, 09:11 PM

The fact that he was still managing a club when he's 70 speaks volume about Sir Bobby. He's truly a legend, survivor of 5 cancer cases and fighting them for the past 18 years while still managing top class football clubs.
Its hard to believe 4 days ago he was still being wheeled into St James Park. Its almost like he was giving his final goodbye to the fans. But yeah, he looked quite ill in the picture.
Anyways, rest in peace, Sir Bobby Robson.

Sir Bobby was probably one of the first managers I knew by name. That was back in 1990 during the World Cup in Italy when I first started watching football. He also made Newcastle a decent team to watch, and I really do believe that karma had a role to play in Newcastle's downfall since his sacking.
RIP Sir Bobby. You're a real class act.

Sir Bobby Robson is one of the managers from the EPL that I remember well. I liked listening to his post match interviews when he was in charge of Newcastle. He was always honest in his assessment and was quite witty as well. Truly one of the few true gentlemen to have graced the game.
RIP.

The time when I first started supporting Newcastle United was during Sir Bobby Robson's era He was a real nice guy on and off the pitch, brought in some awesome players too like L.Robert and J.Woodgate. He made Newcastle a force to be reckon with, unlike now. Really miss those good times
RIP Sir Bobby

He's one of the managers that I really adore back in the days when he was still managing Newcastle. Even if they're playing against Man Utd.

One of the last remaining traditional football managers has passed on. Brought an England team featuring starts like Peter Beardsley, David Platt, Paul Gascoigne, John Barnes, Peter Shilton, Chris Waddle, Terry Butcher and Stuart Pearce all the way to the semi-finals of Italia 90. Unlucky to lose to Germany on penalties as Shilton dived the right way each time. It was the last time I remember England being a powerhouse. It was also the dawn on a new era as new age managers took over and players slowly drifted apart. They weren't encouraged to socialise and mix about anymore. Training was now serious business and there was no fooling about. Where are England now again?
A true gentleman he was. I enjoyed watching his interviews and listening to his insights. RIP.
