Edifier has released a high end earphone this month - H260. By the support of Edifier, information regarding the H260 is easily available. And after one week of usage (for the burn-in), we'd like to present the review of H260.

The most widely-circulated question about the H260 is wheter it can easily trump the other earphones in the sub RMB 500 category. Before we get to there, let's check out the H260.

From the pic above, the H260's packaging is quite different from the other Edifier headphones. They have addressed the problems in the previous packaging. In the case of the H100, although the paper box was very attractive, the headphone casing was totally unattractive. It's a very outstanding change in the H260.

For the headphone casings, the H260's has underwent detailed design. The build quality has improved, the design is not bad and it feels light in the pocket.

We feel the H260's packaging improvements are significant. This aspect is very important towards consumers now. Of course, no matter what kind of user you are, you will be concerned about the usage of the H260. We will now talk about the H260 earphones.

(2nd page, canal earphones, comfort is the biggest question)

As you can see, it is not hard to guess that the H260 is a canal earphone, and for canal earphones, comfort is the biggest factor for consumers. Because canal earphones create a silent enviroment, and everbody's sensitvity is different, you will have some early incompatibilities with them.

When we first tested the H260, it was quite a tight fit (on medium rubber plugs), but after 30 minutes or so of getting used to it, there was some changes. Although we may feel that using smaller rubber plugs may be more comfortable, there will be big differences in performance due to the gaps. So, medium rubber plugs are the best size for most people. The big rubber plugs, many people wont have the need for them.

Besides comfort, we must confirm that the canal earphones create an enclosed enviroment. If it's too loose, there is no way to accurately gauge the performance. Comapred to the previous earphones from Edifier, we feel that the H260 has improved in terms of comfort, but not exceptional. We will use the following picture to show where the real problem lies.

Not too long ago, we reviewed the Sony NX1, we found out that the comfort of canal earphones can be affected by the material of the plugs. Smaller and thinner plugs can be more comfortable, but under the same dimensions, smaller plugs can be almost as good as big plugs in creating an enclosed enviroment. But, of course, smaller plugs are more comforable and a strong have hear-?-? effect although they degrade easier.


(page 3, sound quality test, how H260 wins the Sony E888)

Although many forums say that the H260 defeats all other earphones in the sub RMB 500 categroy, but due to limited conditions, [the author] only has a RMB 300+ Sony E888 and a Sony NX1 which was reviewed not too long ago. Both Sonys cost around RMB 350, and has surpassed H260's price by over 50%. Although we have no means of proving that the H260 is capable of surpassing RMB 500 earphones, but we can have comparision of the H260 and E888.

Sony E888's reputation is quite big for a RMB300+ earphone, brand also not bad. So how does the H260 stack up to the opposition? We use the Ling Long soundcard as a testbed.

Under the Ling Long 2, both earphones perform splendidly, as both must surpass the quality of normal earphones. We easily found out that the H260's sound quality distinctly surpasses the Sony E888. Of course, the H260's sound is not perfect.

Let's talk about the bass first. Canal earphones produce good bass easily, and the H260's bass depth, punch and clarity are not bad. The E888 is not capable of the H260's bass qualities. The E888 gives out a thinny bass. But, [the author] feels that the H260's bass might be overpowering for light music. But for Jazz where the recording is exceptional, the H260 performs very well. From the perspective of reproducing music as closely to the original source, the H260's bass has punch, but there are some ??.

Treble - the H260 is not hard on the ears, but picky on recording quality. For lower quality recordings, the treble can be quite noisy and undetailed. The treble for the H260 is much better than the E888, it is quite detailed. Only for the midrange does it sound a bit thinny. The midrange on the H260 is not rich enough, artistes sound younger than they are. This is one part where the H260 loses to the E888. But, the E888's midrange is altered, especially for human sounds, which is quite unreal.

Conclusion, the H260's treble, midrange, bass, soundstage(?) and muscial qualities are exceptional. As a RMB 200 product, it is a value buy. But for the movement of sound, it is quite hard for canal earphones to achieve this. Compared to international brands, the H260's price is very attractive and everyone should go test it out. Even though the H260 is a high end product from Edifier, it is not the best.

Conclusion

Everyone may not understand how did Edifier suddenly improve in the earphone department. By understanding the earphone market in the RMB500 - 1000 category, it's not about the design, wheter your are Edifier or Sennheiser. As the components are the same, they both are produced from one of the many domestic earphone factories.

We'd like to tell everybody currently AKG, sennheiser and (Metal 3 point?) have sucky low end earphones or maybe they dont invest in the R&D/put effort. They just use the packaging and brand name to monopolize the domestic market. When the H260 goes onto the market, you guys should really give our domestic brand earphone a go.
