vy nicely done eric!!! now i wonder why there isn't much interest in this brand... given that the specs & features are tremendously much better than its competitors. some more @ cheaper prices!!!

Any members can provide any info??

Is it coz dis brand juz came to the local scene???

Added on August 7, 2009, 6:18 pm1 main reason i cud think is due to the service/ or lacking customer service faciilities.. It seems that a lot of notebook purchasers are very particulars on after sales services..

For example ppl are so excited when dell upgraded the XPS 16 with the ATI 4670 card.. seems like its heaven send!! Given that the GX725 comes with ATI 4850 a much better card @ similar price, nobody pay attention to MSI..

Hem, why??

1. The brand has been around say 4-5 years already. But due to the lack of advertising etc, not many ppl know about MSI laptops.

2. Well, usually the place that sells this notebook offers warranty service as well.

3. Like before, Dell is an established brand, so ppl trust Dell to offer better quality and aftersales service.

Well, I do hope that I created this thread, more ppl will understand more about MSI and perhaps jump onto the MSI bandwagon.

main problem with MSI is the after-sales service indeed..

they dun ve it's own service center to deal with all these problems... usually, it's the local distributor who does the job...

so basically, it's a bit like the case of Sager...

I think it's slightly better than Sager. At least there are local distributors.

It will take sometime for MSI to have their own service centre locally.

I always liked their laptops for the overclock button as it would be useful in gaming like those desperate times that you need slightly more performance for gaming.

This wonderful machine GX725 cost around 5K... juz check with its main distributor media forte for more details bro... however, a lot of the forum members don't really like it due to the "perceived" problems in servicing this machine..

Onli way is for some nice owners provide feedback, then we will know for sure how 1) reliable the machine is, and 2) servicing issues...

Well, as I said before, mine is also a MSI.

Minor intermittent problems like randomly hang happens. But lately I noticed that my WiFi adapter is dead also. Since mine is an older model, and the WiFi adapter is of the Mini PCI type, looking for a replacement will be harder.

Keyboard, touchpad and screen are still fine. Screen has no dead pixels whatsoever. Oh, since I used to plug in and plug out of the audio jack a wee bit too rough+often, it is also dead. Using an external USB sound card to power my speakers.

not all countries with repair service are done by MSI...

for one, Malaysia and Singapore are not...

yes, it's a great machine, but that's the risk to take...

The reason I bought this laptop is for work purpose... Weird blink.gif ...
Nice spec actually... Been eyeing this laptop early this year...
Ok la for the price less than RM5000... rclxms.gif
including freebies: gaming mouse and MSI design laptop bag..
For me.. is worth the investment... biggrin.gif

The Spec:
MSI GT725 | C2D P8600 | 500GB | ATI Radeon HD4850 512MB GDDR3

Main drawback for this laptop... Heavy... 3.5kg... sweat.gif

The build... better than Acer... (no offence guys... this is my opinion)...
I found out ok... giving scale - I will rate 8/10...

Weird about MSI - Malaysia will always left out from their market radar... sweat.gif

My point is that before buying this model, MSI have already begin promoting GT729..
Did ask the seller about this latest model but it seem they (seller) doesn't know that this new model exist...

That's the prob. And in terms of warranty claims, it will be a bit tough.

Thank god mine did not give me any major problems.

Running solid after 2 years of rough usage.

They have a Laptop Service Center already?

Here's a list I found ->

» Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... «

As for the extended warranty period, AFAIK, MSI Malaysia does not offer that. I could be wrong.

wink.gif

added -> what model was ur acer? my friend has a 5000-series acer he bought 4 years ago. still running strong till today..

Yup.. same situation as me...

Outside from Malaysia - MSI laptop quite a strong brand.. especially in US and Europe.. (not to forget Singapore)

Haizz... Look at the positive side... at least we are unique... brows.gif

MSI are now promoting their netbooks... hope they can establish themselves here in Malaysia...

any msi wind user realize that your wind can overclock?..i just found in bios have setting DOC.can set 8%,15.
first i dont know what is that..then search on google..i found that is for overclock or turbo mode your wind atom processor..
i try it..and its work...i set 15%.the max in bios..after boot window then press fn+f10..automatically popup out sad turbo on..then check in cpuz..it show 1880mhz from 1660mhz..on turbo mode the power button led also change color to orange..
to make this thing work need run on power from plug..on battery is does not work.

So far only saw 1 review saying the fan problem. but the GT725 is the benchmark/comparison for all the high-end graphic laptop.

Running 7 on my VR320x.

Not bad, but 7 can't load the default drivers for the X300.

And also for the Ralink WiFi.

But the rest is fine.

this my mom's lappy, she buy coz priority at weight n thickness also she want a slightly power compare a netbook.. here's my comment:
- does not come with any external DVDrom
- the keyboard really look cheap (u press in the middle of it the whole keyboard also like being press)
- but the MSI logo behind got backlit light
- only got 4 cell batt, if 8 cell can last 8 hours if i not mistaken.. the batt really thin.. not usual batt
- the left part which at ur left hand loc, will feel a bit warm, but acceptable..
- if using w7 should increase a bit..
- only have 1 slot for RAM
- the SPEAKER is surprising loud, at review they said it the weak point, but after i test a max vol can overrun with my k40ab speaker.. but lack at bass sound, but the treble n mid sound is louder then my k40ab..
- the ventilation place is share with left speaker, so that why it's dosent hv proper ventilation for it.. (that the cause the heat at left side)
- the vista score is
cpu: 3.6
ram: 4.9 (2gb)
graphic: 3.4
gaming: 3.5
hdd: 5.2
- to reformat as easy as press F3 button b4 enter OS.. n all the driver will install itself.. take around 20-30min not sure exactly how long..
- the mouse include kind of special coz the usb socket also can place inside the mouse which the cabel is retractable (like vacuum cabel mechanism self retractable)
- but i notice the lappy it's a bit late to detect USB (even a mouse, but still acceptable)
- the package include the bag (but it's like file holder, so cant place the mouse n power adapter) so my mom ask another bag for free.. she got lenovo bag..
- the package also come with small piece of smooth clothes for cleaning
the conclusion
- my mom like it a lot, n the spec can run her SPSS (statistical software dunno for what) software smoothly, n it's light n thin.. thumbup.gif thumbup.gif

X340
• The Latest Intel® Core® 2 Solo processor technology (ULV SU3500 1.4ghz) 3mb cache n 800mhz FSB quite ok..
• Genuine Windows Vista® Home Premium (oredy got inside the hdd n include all the ori vista cd etc)
• 13" 16:9 Wide Screen Display (1366 by 768 pixels resolution)
• Advanced Power Saving Technology (use Fn button, got gaming/movie/presentation/office/turbo battery/ECO off mode)
• WiMAX™ Wireless Module (optional) (this features not yet check, maybe have maybe not)
• HDMI (High-Definition Multimedia Interface) Output
• Built-In High Resolution Mega Pixels Webcam (which is 1.3mp)
• 802.11b / g / n Wireless Lan with Bluetooth (optional) (both got Wifi n Bluetooth)
• The Most Complete Expanded Interface
- 320gb 5400rpm HDD
- Mobile Intel® GMA 4500HD (dedicated 32mb) up to 781mb

this my mom's lappy, she buy coz priority at weight n thickness also she want a slightly power compare a netbook.. here's my comment:

Well this brand is not as famous as Sager which is known for gaming laptops but their gaming series are pretty good and nicely price. Hope more people will get to know about it. Another is the warranty. I heard some bad things about it before this

not much difference unless you play Full HD resolution. 729 well got some sites stated using dual core and some put quad core Q9000 if it was i7 then would be better

Truthfully, its almost the same that i thinks there is no comparison between those 2. The single card (not SLI one).

frankly, i think MSI shud be more decisive in their business strategy in terms whether they want to play the notebook game or not.. they are half heartly intro gaming products but stopped in between by not having sufficient machines for the sellers to sell.. example, ppl interested in the gx725, but all we can find is gx620 or gx 720.. np but these old models are mostly sold @ 4,999.. this is ridiculous pricing!!

Moreover, most sellers said they don't hav gx725 in stock due to low demand for gaming notebooks ( my fren spoken to media forte) in kl - then i am wondering why alienware can sell their MX15X & M17X at much more higher price than GX725??? some more we know that alienware got buyer as can be shown in the alienware thread..

Therefore, i believe it boils down to idiot MSI stupid policies, THEY DON'T KNOW WHAT THEY WANT TO DO IN THE NOTEBOOK SEGMENT OF THE INDUSTRY.. hav a nice weekend, cheers bros & sis!!! smile.gif

I feel it could be media forte at fault here. Earlier I did email them for info when it will arrive. They just gave a timeframe like mid june. Later on they never even bother to inform if it actually arrived or not even when I did call that person who even gave me his own number.... for the stock well I did heard that 729 is due to low market demand and hard to produce high quality monitors....duno what crap is this though

is 1GB GX260 card better or HD 4850 512MB? this will help me decide MSI vs Sager. have read al the posts here, and i agree that if MSI had some good standing in malaysia with support, it could be good. until then ppl will always be reluctant and scared to buy one.

Well RAM cannot compensate for the graphics card tongue.gif Their selling point was the superior 4850 which is a very decent card priced very competitively. So I guess those new models will have a tough time selling unless they kill off GT 725

Today I just went to Lowyat and Digital Mall PJ, looking for CX700 model.

I saw the CR700 at PC fair but do some research from internet and find out that CX700 using better graphic card.

But after spend an hour in Lowyat, I didnt find any MSI notebook display in any shop that selling notebook, not even one.

Really disappointed.

you mean Wind U100 netbook can be modded to become touch screen?

does it void the warranty if we do so?

I'm thinking of getting one too, but the model only has 2gb DDR2 400 and I am planning to install win7 on it.

am just wondering if any U100 users here upgraded the ram?

i think....ya, will void the warranty.

i just bought my Wind U100 plus at ViewNet (the hypermarket one),
the price RM1199,the price including upgrade to 2gb ddr2 667 n some accessories.
n come wit OEM Win XP.

u can install win 7, if u dun want xp.
but remember the win xp is ori (they didnt give disc...just recovery disc only)

but u can dual boot. ( i thinking to do that now)
keep ur win xp. just install another OS.
then boot the OS u want.

Sure I know what is winds la.... so famous.... so nice that you can get so nice laptop for free..... what did first place get then? I heard there was a tournament which pays first place 100k USD? cooling fan is pretty useless actually unless you get those like from coolermaster..... we can't expect plastic which cannot conduct heat to dissipate heat right? it will get stuck and the heat will build up

Pasang 2GB Corsair DDR2-800 Gaming RAM on my VR320X.

If the Corsair alone, it won't boot.

If with another stick of DDR2-667 RAM, can boot, but only detect 2GB.

hmm.gif

And with both sticks, randomly getting BSODs..

@Devil94,

As a reseller, this MSi lappy never give me headache. No prob so far. Among the best selling now is MSi Wind U130X. This is some pic of my customer MSi U130X. smile.gif

» Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... «

Added on February 24, 2010, 9:42 amNOTE: Some Info for MSi Fans

MSi U130x currently is a latest netbook from MSi besides U135. But mid of March, the will be U130. Different between U130x and U130 is :

U130X
160Gb Hard Disk
3 Cells Battery
Free Dos
Market price is RM1099

U130
250Gb Hard Disk
6 Cells Battery
Windows 7 Starter
Market price is RM1299

If got prob to install from external dvd, just enter BIOS, go to save & exit menu. Under that menu got boot override option. So choose ur external dvd drive in that option.Sometimes its marked not as external DVD drive. But, it will marked as USB key smile.gif

@Subrok007, for GX model,i think there is GX733,GX720 model only and latest one is GT740 smile.gif

Market Price:
GX733 = RM4499
GX720 = RM4999
GT740 = RM6999 (Core i7 with ddr3)

Just bought the CX420 about a week ago. The build quality is very good. Feels very solid and I like the looks of the 'Color film Print Technology'. I just do alot of surfing and dont play games much so it runs very quiet and cool (in low power setting). Probably can get around 2-3 hours on the battery.

I feel its value for money as the specs are quite decent for the money I paid:
CPU: Intel Core i5-430M
VGA: ATI Radeon HD5470 with 1GB DDR3 VRAM
LED Panel: 14" HD 1366x768 (Glare Type)
RAM: DDRIII 2GB*1
HDD: 320GB
RF: 802.11b/g/n
BlueTooth
Chiclet Keyboard

I found there was a lot of flex and give when typing on the keyboard. I didn't like that cos if you type a bit hard you can see the keyboard area being depressed. The build quality of the CR400 doesn't seem as solid as the CX420. I recommend you take the CX420 instead. Far better build quality and specs for just a little bit more money.

May i know how the CX420 audio? acceptable or too bad? Heard someone said the sound is too soft.

Can upgrade to 4G ram ? How much approximately (if you know)?

Did they give u any free gift?

How u pay? Cash in one lump sum or installment? Can pay by credit card(so can take bank installment package)?

Sorry to ask so many Q, I am planned to get one on this coming PC fair. TQ.

I made a mistake about the CX420s' sound cos I was listening to a very soft video clip. The sound volume is definitely acceptable.

Yes, can upgrade to 4GB RAM (price is approx RM150).

Free gifts includes MSI bag, cooling pad, mouse + mouse pad, cleaning kit, kensington locking cable.

Pay by credit card in one lump sum is additional 2%. Credit card installment package is additional 5% (I think).

The price of the MSI CX420 has now dropped to RM2099 at amega.com.my. Go to Octavo at Digital Mall and use this info to bargain for a lower price than this.

Good luck. rclxms.gif

It is NOT cheap! It is inexpensive. Cheap means lousy and this laptop is NOT lousy! tongue.gif This CX420 is inexpensive cos for the money you pay you are getting specs & performance level comparable to other brands costing up to 30% more! rclxms.gif

Give MSi another year or so. It seems they are now hitting the market(Malaysian and International) very aggressively.

Latest MSI Laptops Take Market by Storm
Highly Recommended by World Media

During the world’s three major computer exhibitions held during the first half of the year, MSI unveiled a strong array of 30 notebook computers. Now that the laptops are hitting the market, media around the world have had some highly positive write ups about them. The GX740, for example, is a gamers’ dream machine which has been awarded Editor’s Choice several times and is being oohed and aahed for its awesome presence and performance. The stylish design and extended battery life of the thin and light X-Slim X350 laptop and the Wind U160 netbook have also made them Editor’s Choice. The Wind U160 has been extolled as the best netbook on the market.

30 models hitting market: In order to realize its goal of becoming one of the top ten global names in laptops in 2010, MSI rolled out 30 NB models at the world’s three biggest computer shows during the first half of the year. These exhibitions included CES in Las Vegas, Nevada, USA; CeBIT in Hanover, Germany; and Computex in Taipei, Taiwan. These NB computer series caught the attention of the global media at the shows and have been snatching one award after another ever since. The Wind U160 and X-Slim X620, for instance, received Germany’s iF Product Design Award for 2010—the design world’s equivalent of an Oscar, and the X-Slim X360 was named Buyers’ Choice at Computex. These NBs have been receiving rave reviews by the world media almost as soon as they hit the market.

Ultimate performance

GX740 gaming notebook: Right after hitting the market, editors of many internationally renowned high tech mags, such as I4U, are not only recommending the GX740, they were unanimous in their praise of the GX740’s exceptional performance. Superior multimedia makes the GX740 more than just a gaming machine, it makes it MSI’s flagship for performance and multimedia. The editor of Tweak Town put it this way, “I really like the MSI GX740 gaming notebook… for the price, it performs very well. This machine is also very adept at multimedia.”

Leading the pack

Wind U160: The British media had nothing but good things to say about MSI’s U160 which received Germany’s iF Product Design Award for 2010. It stands above the rest in terms of performance and stylishly innovative design and it has the longest battery life of any netbook on the market. After testing it, Hexus said MSI’s U160 is the “thinnest-ever netbook in our review sample - equipped with a useful six-cell battery - weighs just 1.2kg, making it small, ultra-thin, ultra-light and suitably portable in every sense.”

Guys, any idea which booth in PC Fair / Kedai (Except Octavo - bit far) will most likely have MSI-CX420, it seems everyone is just selling the CX420x (tak ada OS punya) or Malaysia memang tak ada CX420 but only CX420X.

Pening.......

Isn't it better if you have the option of choosing whatever OS you want to install on your laptop? There could be substantial cost savings if you install Linux or even MAC OS if you so choose. I am not sure about the MAC OS, pls consult some sifus here if this MSI could support MAC OS.

The sticker on my laptop reads CX420 and it came with Freedos. Don't know what you mean by CX420X.

hi guys. Just stumbled here by chance n got interested with msi brand. Previously i too being skeptical with msi. Most prolly bcuz it was in the shadow of other more popular brands like dell, acer, compaq n all. But being popular does not mean better at all, rite. So, does msi performance wise and durability is on par with other brands. I've read dat cx420 was nicely built n price wise too. Any one compare dis to a same specs laptops, like acer 4741 or compaqs cq42? Dun shoot me as im just a curious noob looking for a value buy.

adz83, a bit of trivia for you. Back in the early 80's when the clone IBM's came on the Malaysian scene, the original IBM desktops & notebooks was the king of the hill. The price was rather exorbitant so not many people could afford them. The most saleable notebook then, that the above average man-in-the-street could afford, was the NEC. It was as much a status symbol as the Motorola brick. In those early days of the Malaysian notebook scene nobody would touch an Acer with a 10 foot pole. Their reputation was that bad! Acer persisted and they got their volume going so everybody talks about Acer since they have significant market share.

MSI was for a very long time OEM manufacturers of laptops whilst concentrating on building their reputation with their motherboards. When they noticed how good the demand was for their netbooks that they were making for others they decided to try their hand at marketing it under their own MSI brand. They are now very aggressively marketing their notebooks globally and some of the models have been receiving rave reviews all over the world. People are only now beginning to take notice of MSI notebooks cos for a long time they did not have any significant market share because they were not really into selling notebooks, only motherboards and being OEM manufacturers. Quantity and quality are two entirely different things. You see many Proton Kancils on the roads. That doesnt mean its a better car than Porsche that you don't see too many of. tongue.gif

Go and see the CX420 for yourself. It is solidly built. The specs you are getting for the money you pay is good value for money. Not only that but I find the CX420 aesthetically stunning. It will turn heads.

I am not in anyway associated with MSI. I just happen to love their products. Two weeks after I bought the CX420 I also bought the MSI Wind U140 netbook that is now on promotion at Courts for RM989. Check out that netbook at Courts. It will give you an idea of MSI quality.

Good luck! biggrin.gif

thanks wongpeter for the explaination. rclxms.gif so, by this i can conclude that MSI was just as ggod as other brands, rite? and i see the only main factor for the inpopularity is the only fact that they doesn't have a service center here. rite? warranty does a plays a big part huh?

I had the same reservations back then as you have now. Before I bought the CX420 last month I was doing a lot of legwork going here and there to check out the different brands. Having seen the CX420 I still needed to check out about the service part. I also wanted to know if accessories esp the battery was easy to purchase. I made a query regarding the availability of spare batteries on MSI website and they replied very promptly that I could go to their service center @

MSI Service center-Acacia IT Service Center
(Total 22 repair centers in Malaysia)
No:100, Grd & 1sf Floor, SS14/1 Subang Jaya,47500 Petaling Jaya,Selangor Darul Ehsan
Tel:603-5635-2600

If a product is well built you don't have to worry about the warranty. If it is poor quality even a 3 year warranty is useless cos your laptop will be spending more time at the service center than in your home!

wahlaueh, swapping the gpu?! I don't play games wan, only surf the net whole day in the integrated Intel graphics mode (actually not whole day lar, only 10 hours or so and then watch a lil porn!) kakaka. Anyway I watch movies in this mode is still ok, smooth, no need to switch to HD5470.

Seriously though, I am running win7 ultimate 32bits (somebody told me that most programs are written for 32bit and if install 64bit win7 may have lotsa problems with applications in future). I just put in the cd and win7 ultimate installed everything by itself. Only thing is I had to go look for the dial-up modem driver on MSI website. I installed that too..... not sure if there is a 56k modem built in. (just in case the wi-fi ko and I can still dialup for email). All the drivers worked perfectly 'out of the box', wi-fi, bluetooth, sound etc.

Battery life is 2.5 to 3 hours or so. I am using Intel graphics mode and not the discrete Radeon HD5470 gpu. It is switchable graphics mode. If you play games then can switch to higher gear using the HD5470.

The screen is ok for me but the angle of view is critical. So if you look at the screen at a greater or lesser angle will be less sharp. I think there is a term for this type of screen. (maybe its nematic, not sure) The screen must be tilted to correct angle for sharpest display.

I am talking about the vertical height of the head in relation to the display. I can't imagine anyone using a laptop and bobbing his head up and down! Why would anyone do that?! Most laptop displays are like that, there is an optimum angle, give or take a couple of degrees, where the display is at its clearest. You will have to check it out 1st hand cos its almost impossible to describe. Just go look at a couple of different brand's displays and vary the angle of view. You'll get the idea soon enough.

Anyone is using CR410 ? The graphic use is Ati Mobility Radeon HD4270, but there are no specific driver for this card or any /thread/ or /discussion/ regarding this card anywhere in google.

Can i know about it capability? Benchmark score?

Note : When i said specific driver, the driver that i can use is only those of 42xx series.

You can just use the driver for HD4200/HD4250..
HD4270 is just a higher clock version of those..
