My wife had a very bad experience with the unethical conduct of Dr John Tan Hong Guan (of SJMC) this morning.

Due to a recent intermittent loss of hearing since the beginning of her pregnancy my wife visited Dr. John Tan on the above mentioned date. The whole visit lasted approximately 5 minutes. She informed Dr. John Tan of her ear problem and was merely told that nothing was wrong as her ear drum was moving when she blows her ear.

Not satisfied with a mere ‘nothing is wrong’ and without any proper medical explanation/advice given, my wife further informed the Dr that she could not blow her ear as it hurts but rather what she has been doing to minimise the pain was by lying down on one side for some time. Dr John merely repeated what she informed and asked my wife to just lie down since she knows lying down helps. My wife told him it was not possible to be lying down all the time and he just smiled without providing further explanation. He then told my wife all the best to end the session. This whole event and conversation took less than 5 minutes.

When my wife was presented with the bill (as attached), she was shocked to see that she was being charged MYR570.32. As a foreigner, my wife was unsure if it was a mistake in the bill. She called me for help to speak to the Dr to find out the reason for the charges and to seek clarification on the procedure mentioned in the bill that justified such amount.

My wife managed to pass the phone to Dr John. Before I managed to finish my question to seek clarification on the exact procedure that was performed within the 3 minutes visit, he shut me off by telling me “I don’t know what you are asking. I don’t want to talk to you”. He walked off from the room leaving my wife alone in the room unattended.

My wife was stunned by such attitude of a medical practitioner. Such unethical conduct has completely tarnished the image of all the medical practitioners of Malaysia. Due to this experience, my wife has since refused to seek further medical advice from any Doctor in the country and opted to return to South Korea for treatment.

We had lodged a formal complaint to SJMC customer care.

Disclaimer: This is entirely our personal experience with this specific Dr and to share with members of this forum here. It is not meant to undermine anybody's experience (good or bad) with the same Dr.
We had lodged a formal complaint with SJMC and we are waiting for their investigation on this matter. Meanwhile, I am sure there are many other good and ethical doctors in Malaysia that treat patients with respect and care.
