7.1 Setup, A Necessity?

Boys,
Need some advice here. I know 7.1 is becoming the defacto standard in HT systems. I am planning in only a 5.1 (ok, ok, no budget). So I need to know, if I go 5.1, will I be missing a lot in terms of AQ/effects? How many titles support true 7.1 channels anyway?
Thank you.

A proper 5.1 setup will bring you right into the middle of any movie action. However, fly-by sound will sound smoother with the extra speaker at the rear in a larger room (think of the real cinema speakers setup and position). A good AVR will extract the 5.1 into 6/7.1 giving you a more better movie experience.

You need to get a very good dipole if going for 5.1. What you need is a diffuse surround. Normally if you have 2 rows of seat, then 7.1 is necessary. Also, 7.1 will give you a smoother transition of sound from back to front. Most material is 5.1 so you need either PLIIx or THX Surround mode to simulate 7.1

I think besides budget, the mess of extra pair of long cables and the space to hang up the another 2 back surrounds are pulling many HT set-up from adopting 7.1 system. If the back 4 are not positioned at same height, the smooth transition of the surround sound will not be felt too.

If u have dedicated AV room then no problem to go crazy with speakers. Easily can hide the cables.
