Protein powder or not, we don't know but one thing for sure, top level footballers have to lead a pretty clean life in the sense that the food intake, the drinks, their lifestyle and etc all are optimised. Was reading an article that Robin Van Persie don't eat meat after a game coz his recovery is slower after taking them. The days of boozy night of the top players are gone i guess, and no ciggies for them too, that is if you want to play till you're 30's. Thing is, these players are like machines nowadays, a change in lifestyle will result in a 2-3% performance gain in their gameplay.
Just a point to note, i dont think players actually need to build up their body. They are just that fit, you'd be amazed at their fat percentage and heart rate. Besides, they don't need to bulk up on their size just to be good, football is not all about who's got the most muscle. |

Its all down to a player's commitment. Fat Ronaldo let himself go abit too much and developed a fecking huge one pack. Still a class player mind, one of the best in the world back in his Phenomenon days. Cristiano on the other hand worked like a dog trying to build up muscle into his body to complement his pace with power. The rate at which he grew was exceptional. When he first arrived he looked like a scrawny teenager. In 06/07 opponents were basically bouncing off him. He's known to like English pie and we've seen videos of him chomping down on pizzas and burgers after a match, but his build is probably one of the most impressive in the league.

QUOTE(Mr Kong @ Jul 25 2009, 12:13 AM) Lets say your some skinnybone ... if you were ask to play in a physically demanding competition, and you don't have body mass .. how are you gonna hold your ground when a big size opponent come running to you.Of course the only way to build body mass is to eat ... the traditional way is eat protein rich food. |

On this topic, I think they have to be professional about what they eat, drink, shag and so forth. The thing is that some might say they are not supposed to smoke or drink, but there are plenty of them who does, even in their haydays. Gazza is one, Teddy Shringham is another, Didi Hamman is another that I can remember. Apart from that, most of them would drink champagne rather than beer or hard liquor, reason being champagne is easier to be broken down by their body, and of course, made them look 100 times more classy than say a bottle of scotch.
Like giotto said, the days of them downing a pint or 10 after a match / training session and whatever is gone, most of them don't even drink. On your question on protein pewder, i am sure that they do take some sort of supplement to help as most of these are quick fixes, but of course, it doesn't beat the real thing, milk and meat. |

Champagne? Ah non more so than 'Champagne Charlie' eh? Maybe that's why Souey was a nut on the pitch. He was drunk most of the time.

![]() Micah Richards! But anyways, the demands of the gung ho EPL physical play, definitely every player needs to bulk up on their muscles. Else, you'd be flying all over the place. Imagine Sol Campbell or Micah Richards coming at you at full steam, you'd literally fly. Much like how Rooney literally made one of the Malaysian players flew a good 1.5-2 meter away when he unsportingly body checked the Malaysia dude during the Man Utd's 2nd game on Monday. At the same time, you can't be body building when you're playing competetive football. Excessive muscle might make you a little less flexible and eve if you're half a second slower to react, its gonna punish you during the game. Not to mention the excessive muscle equals to more weight. When you're heavier, you're slower, its as simple as that. Which is why clubs have physio and team doctors that will assess your optimum body weight, muscle mass and etc. Players got to watch their diet, as simple as that. I remembered reading an article about Vidic and how he loves the English fish and chips but sadly he can't eat them and that shows how committed he is to being an athletic person. Similarly, Robin Van Persie doesnt eat meat after a game coz he says that helps him recover from matches faster than usual. |

I read from somewhere that Berbatov smokes. But by and large, the standards of the EPL and the world game demand nothing but the best from players, coaches and club dieticians. These guys are like robots, every inch of their bodies built and developed to perform 100% on the pitch.

Mike,
Heard that your solid body is a result of years of strict diet and weight training regime. Every inch of your body is built and developed to perform 100% on the futsal pitch. |

I do think players in the EPL have to work harder on their strength.. EPL is tougher than other leagues..
