i have googled many website to get the best one to myself, i found www.zentao.com/guitar as the best among my search results.... i noticed that there are a lot of websites, keep teaching how to play chords without giving much explanation to the theory parts. i am here to get some recommendation from u all, especially those who self-learning, and claimed that the website they refer is decent.. or get a book will be a more practical move. one thing i dislike about zentao is that it keeps teaching theory without giving some easy song for us to play at regular interval before moving on to the another theory or concept, it makes the entire learning a little bored...hehe Added on July 22, 2009, 1:45 amQUOTE(ilovestitch @ Jul 22 2009, 01:45 AM) i have googled many website to get the best one to myself, i found www.zentao.com/guitar as the best among my search results.... i noticed that there are a lot of websites, keep teaching how to play chords without giving much explanation to the theory parts. i am here to get some recommendation from u all, especially those who self-learning, and claimed that the website they refer is decent.. or get a book will be a more practical move. one thing i dislike about www.zentao.com/guitar is that it keeps teaching theory without giving some easy song for us to play at regular interval before moving on to the another theory or concept, it makes the entire learning a little bored...hehe This post has been edited by ilovestitch: Jul 22 2009, 01:45 AM

It really depends on what type of guitar you're using. Acoustic? Electric? Classical? All uses different types of teaching. Acoustic is more on strumming and chords. Classical is more on plucking individual strings and individual notes (kinda like keyboard instruments, but played on guitar). So in a way, you'll learn more on music theory if you pursue the latter. I am currently using this David Braid's book - http://www.amazon.com/Play-Classical-Guita...d/dp/0879306572 - Which teaches step by step on classical guitar, but it kinda gets boring (cause I'm a bit impatient lol) cause they teach you note by note, even show you the note on a music sheet (so, yes, you get to learn to read from music sheet in the process). You can spend 1-2 hours just plucking this note and that note and still never learn enough to play a song. But comparing this book to books like "Guitars for Dummies" (which I also have a copy), I prefer this David Braid book. The Dummies book is more oriented towards acoustic guitars (they do have a section devoted to Classical guitars, but only one section).

He probably means the chords and their diagrams... if it is the chord diagrams, look at the diagram for 5 seconds, then look at your fret board for 5 seconds and continue until you know how to press...
it is not that hard...
if what you mean is the tuning, i think it is better for you to ask someone who knows guitar to tune it for you, or you can get a tuner and read the manual on how to tune your guitar.
and yes, tuning is important. it can motivate you or un-motivate you from practicing.

without a teacher, the best way is to get a book. it would help if u have abit of music knowledge from previous instruments.

Dummies is well- known by its "lack of information".... Last time my friend bought a c programming book (dummies), the most important part "pointer" (for those who know about programming) was introduced briefly for about 1 or 2 pages.... sad case...
