thats because in malaysia, you have to get your mechanical engineering degree first, then Masters specializing in acoustics.

sound is a very mechanical thing. sure theres the e&e part, but when you handle w acoustics, ure talking alot about the air, the material structure and properties, waves and impulses.
Malaysians tend to think its only music, hence the number of musicians/singers who sign up for the course not entirely sure whats in store for them. its one thing attending your class in college, another game once you r out working. hehe.

i graduated as a mechanical engineer, with my final year research on acoustics. I believe music background is also a must. Not just the ability to play music, but subjects like a wide knowledge on instrument tone, playing styles, techniques, music arrangement.
