RM500... you want to play acoustic/classical or electric guitar...

Heya I just bought a guitar (beginner myself) last weekend so I'll share my experience.

First you need to know what style you want. If you like mainstream strumming then it's Acoustic. If you like the individual notes style (like piano) you may want to try Classical. Classical is also known as the spanish guitar, to give you an idea of what kind of music it'll be.

But don't worry too much, you can play classical using acoustic, and acoustic using classical. It's just minor differences. However it's best to pick the ideal guitar for beginners according to the type. FYI classical guitars use nylon strings for the first 3 strings and also have wider necks.

For acoustic I hear that now the Yamaha F-310 is pretty popular. Price around RM400.

Anyway best is just walk into a shop and ask. Just say you want to learn and ask them to recommend. I did that and I got my guitar for rm350 including a padded bag (make sure padded, if you intend to bring it outdoors), a digital tuner (a must, else very hard to tune as a beginner if you can't recognise the note/tone yet), and a footstool (not really important, i think, but i'm just following what guides teach me to do lol).

If you're willing to spend more, you should get a better guitar. I notice my guitar strings go out of tune quite often (altho I'm not sure if it's guitar problem or me) and even the sales guy told me most people buy a better guitar when they go for grading exams. It's a matter of long term, short term, and budget, I guess.

Oh a third style is the electric guitar. This one a bit expensive cause you'll need to buy an amplifier and stuffs. Not sure on how much all these will cost, tho.

Acoustic using classical isn't fun. But you can play classical on acoustic using special 'Silk and Steel strings'.

There are a BUNCH of threads on this. Use the Search function . Google is also your friend.

Best is just to buy the best guitar in your budget that you like.

Lung, try changing the tuners (if it's possible). I know my Ibanez Gotoh 'Smooth Tuners' are amazing at their job.

Oh those screw things are called tuners also? Confusing!

Er... actually technical term is 'machine heads' or 'tuning peg' .

thanks again. i wanna ask some question, did all of you learn to play guitar with classes or just by yourself(just wondering) and also if u learn by yourself how did u learn it

I find it easiest to learn from friends that play.

kind of agree with kelvw, but need to take note of the correct ways of playing the guitar. just try not to develop some unwanted habbits especially chord pressing and fingering scales.

i advise you to get yourself an acoustic guitar with a pick up. that way you can be flexible (just add up some effects then you already have an electric guitar, but you will be abit limited with that - but i think that's ok with beginners). i have a yamaha cx-40 (acoustic with pickup). sometimes i do use my zoom606 with my acoustic guitar.

And strats are all really versatile...I can practically guarantee you the sound is great.,..

I would suggest you go round a few guitar stores to get a feel of what you're looking for. They're possibly some good bargains out there. I do feel that if you're willing to part with a little more RM, you should be able to get a better quality guitar that you can keep playing for a longer period before you decide to upgrade.

I think start with electric is better .. thinner necks, narrow frets, lower action, easy to play .... acoustic needs to be more stright... electric guitar free style lol .

steal or borrow one from a relative. sure got somebody have one.

once you got the best i'll assure u no guitar in this world will ever replace those you bought 1st.

Steal, beg, borrow . Another way is to ask friends. I gave away an old acoustic to my friend for free.
