hi there,
i'm actually thinking of setting up my own mini cinema at my house.
The following things i've listed down in order to do that:
(i) Sound System
(ii) Set projector
(iii) Sound proofing..
Anything that i left out? any recommendation? which brand of speaker, projector etc. what are the estimated costs involved? I really dont have any idea on how to start with.
Thanks

I think RM40k to RM50k should get u a decent setup RM5k - AVR (Denon / Onkyo / Marantz) RM15k - Projector & Screen (Panasonic / JVC / Infocus) RM15k to RM20k - 5.1/7.1 Speakers (Too many brands ) RM2k - BD Player RM5k - Cables & some BDs The balance depends on reno cost of room This post has been edited by ronnt88: Jul 14 2009, 12:56 PM

Thanks Another thing to consider is your room setup. Are you going to have a dedicated room for your mini cinema? Or are you putting in your living hall? You also need to set a budget. As ronnt88 mentioned, 40k to 50k will get you a very nice setup. But if you don't want to spend so much, I think 20k to 30k can also suffice. The main thing that will eat your budget is the projector and screen.

Thanks someone mentioned 50k is quite accurate ........... depending on your specs ... the 2 most expensive items would be your Projector set and the soundproofing renovation ..... soundproofing is hard .... but not impossible (just impossible to do perfectly in Malaysia) .... for best quality and cost saving .... is DIY imho i think it's cheaper to get a LCD tv, sit near and have mid-range sound system (since Malaysian homes are NOT SOUNDPROOF - contractors made thin walls) most of us doesnt have the experience of building a dream HT system .... maybe you should try other forums for more details .... http://electronics.howstuffworks.com/home-theater.htmhttp://www.hometheaterforum.com/forum/

We did sound proofing for GSC cinema before. Doing one now for another cap kapak cinema in KK. Remember to subtract 150mm from your walls for the sound proofing That means your room is about 300mm(1 foot) smaller on the sides...

But after that you can kaw kaw turn up the volume and the other room also cant hear. But dont forget your floor and ceiling... if not the vibration from the floor will go down and if you in condo then the fella downstairs will you... You need to sound proof the ceiling and floor(if you not on the ground) too... sound proofing is the most expensive part of the project... I say screw that part and let your neighbours enjoy yout HT too.... This post has been edited by Bishop: Jul 14 2009, 11:37 PM

QUOTE(jchong @ Jul 14 2009, 11:23 PM) Wow, you mean the sound proofing material is 6" thick? What kind of material is it? I bet the soundproofing job would definitely cost a bomb to do so. Since sound is being transferred through structural beams / pillars of a house, it is not an easy task to isolate it. Taking the cost into consideration, I dream of building a detached HT room on the empty land of a semi-d house. No one will complain (go n buy lottery tics now)

i guess this cinema project need to do on staggered basis, considering the costs..
lets start with the main thing first. Projector and Screen..Quite a lot of brands, carrying with different features in the market..latest one equipped with HD thingy, that makes me more blurr..i'm not into something high-end thingy, but absolutely not looking at lower end type, middle type system probably..
Sound system will be my priority no 2, coz once i bought projector and screen, my current home theater can be used temporarily..
Yes, i 'll dedicate a room for this project, next to my kitchen..
Thanks to recliner sofa, its already in my list..not a priority at this moment..
for sound proofing, i did survey how jamming studio setup their sound proofing..i think i can make theirs as my reference..
since this mini cinema, i'm not expecting 100% similar quality with those real cinema..
thanks guys..for the projector and screen, what is minimum/ideal features to look at?

my 2 cents... if you are serious abt home cinema, first phase spend on your room design first..if budget permits, hired one qualify sound engineer which can design such a setup(some may do it part time for you--side income.. ) Room design is very important as if you have a good room setup, chapalaang system will sounds like a million dollar system. Without knowing your room, how are you going to know which system to purchase? Room renovation you will only do once while equipment wise you will definitely upgrade along the way due to poison by forummers here, or the self injected ones HT equipment seller will tell you they can design for you but i say they are not qualify.... happy hunting

a bit out topic..i dont like the latest transformers 2..Somehow i wonder, what type of movies was this. This transformers 2 movie reminds me to these movies:
(a) the Mummy - adventure movies, the pyramid scenes
(b) Alien - robot change to human??huh!
© Startrek - the mission to destroy earth
(d) National Treasure - treasure hunt that need to solve clues, puzzle, look back at history..
(e) fantastic four - secret collaboration between special unit squad and mutan, to save earth from unidentified wild creation - that special unit squad doesnt contribute much!
(f) terminator 3 - the mission to kill specific person..
you may want to add..hehe

When you say "standard projector" you mean those used by companies to show presentations? For one, HT projectors have higher resolution (especially full HD type, 1920x1080). HT projectors are also more geared towards black levels and color accuracy, because these are important for HT use.

Yeah, setting up a home theater is not entirely an easy job but it also depends on your own taste and standard, and of course how deep our pocket is. The first time I got myself a projector (a 2nd hand unit), I nailed a RM35 4'x8' matt white color plywood on the wall as the screen, while Sony HTiB handled the audio. So in total, my first time so-call theater cost me RM2535. I did enjoyed it that time. Then slowly, changed items by items.
