did you guys read about MonsterVintage.com? this small company sells vintage clothing - they were told by Monster Cable to stop using the name altogether, or if they wanted they would have to pay Monster Cable for the use of the word Monster in the name

u can start a co called Penang Cable then sue the gov for using penang bridge and sue those hawkers for using Penang Char Kuey Teow, Penang Laksa, Penang Chee Cheong Fun, PM of Penang, Penang butterfly farm, Penang Kia, Penang Road, Balai Polis Penang, Penang High Court, Penang International Airport, Penang sports club.... i am trying my best but still cant get as many as the list of ppl being sued by Monster Cable... maybe they can sue tnb for putting up the sign 'high voltage cable'

Actually, it's not about starting a company with a name like "Penang Cable" but about getting trade mark rights over the name "Penang Cable". In practice you will not be able to do it because almost all countries do not allow trade mark rights over geographic names, of which "Penang" is one.

Anyway, the situation in US is prone to extremes. In the cable industry you have Monster Cable trying to bully others. McDonalds is also known for this, as is MagLite. Those big American companies take their brand protection very seriously and the legal system there somehow allows them to partly succeed. However, the legal system in other countries are different and not so easy for US brand owners to pull the same stunts elsewhere.
