OMG My scorpion gave birth! What should I do????!!!!
Most of the scorpion available in the pet trade are mostly wild caught or being keep communally
It's not odd to find that your Scorpion suddenly gave birth after keeping it for 1year because their gestation period can range from 8-13months depending on their diet, environment and other factors
So this is what I do when I notice my Scorpion gave birth last year

Step1: Leave the mom alone until she finish giving birth
» Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... «

Step2: To feed or not to feed?
» Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... «

Step3: Separating the scorpling
» Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... «

They are still quite fragile in 2nd instar and tend to die when they molt to 3rd instar
The key is to keep the substrate damp (Not wet!) and make sure your scorpling is hydrated to keep them survive
With this method i have successfully raised 30 scorpling to 2nd instar out of 31 scorpling, 1of them died cause felt from the mom's back

FAQ
Can I feed my scorpling before they molt?
» Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... «

When can i start feeding my scorpling?
» Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... «

What should I feed to my scorpling?

Disclaimer:
This method is only apply for Heterometrus and Pandimus Sp, for other sp, they need different care
For bark scorpion can refer to: http://www.mtsociety.com/forums/index.php?topic=290.0
For desert scorpion can refer to: http://www.mtsociety.com/forums/index.php?topic=291.0

Captive breeding is the process of breeding rare or endangered species

wat sp. we nid to preserve them?

if they are really rare or endangered species we cant simply get them and do captive breeding

If im not mistaken result of inbreeding scorpion is not as bad as in mammal
Once in a while, new blood line shld be introduce
And i heard inbreeding cause the number of offspring to decrease
Not really sure bout tat

Captive breeding can mean breeding any animal captively so we can release them back to the nature or we can have supply of certain species without taking them from the wild

we dont nid to breed the AFS and liocheles coz we can see them everywhere

my fren and i are now trying had on centruroides magaritatus

lester's Orthochirus S.Negebensis are 2 female, cant do mating

i think ryo should save his 10 Hottentotta Hottentotta and breed them

Basically from wat i know cross breeding between same genus is possible
Going over the genus border line is not possible cause the operculum opening does not fit the spermatophore from other genus
But dun quote me, i din really research on it as im not interested in creating a "un-pure" creature

QUOTE
There is 7 reports done by scorpilogists of different species starting the mating dance, 4 of which from different genera. Only 2 was an actual spermatophore dropped, between a Euscorpius and Androctonus pair. In the Androctonus pair (A. australis male x A. maurectanicus female) there was 42 hybrid young produced.

BUT, A. austalis and A. maurectanicus do NOT meet in the wild at any given time, their distrubition does not over lap. So while it HAS happened, it won't happen in the wild.

Scorpions also just "know" that even if they did hyrbidize in the wild, that it would not be sucessful. i.e. matrality, serility, or decreased fitness of hybrid offspring. This is Postzygotic barriers.

And prezygotic barriers are things about the mating itself/where the scorpion comes from. i.e. speices specifc pheromones, anatomical characteristics, courtship behavior, and differences in seasonal phenology range and habitat.

So you can do it in capitivty, but it will never happen in their natural habitat. And if it doesn't happen naturally, I don't see the point of making happen in captivity.

And spacehawk, I think Brian means if you make a B. jacksoni/B.gigas hybrid it will eventually breed again and soon there will be as many hybrids as pure B.jacksoni and B. gigas. So if you *do* hyrbidize, at least don't sell the young and don't breed them again. If you cross breed it should be only for a scintific stand point, and even at that I do not agree with it 100%.

some updates.

have house all the scorpions into the containers.
upon closer inspection i have to conclude that all of lester's scorpions are fat. i have never seen such fat scorpions before.

the "mama" is still giving birth. i have decided not to put her into the maternity ward since i'm worried she will be more stress out and starts to eat more of her youngs.

the other female is in the "maternity ward" and is doing fine.

the rest of the scorpions which are all males except for 1 that i couldn't sexs are house communally and i see the same "asking for permission" behavior as i see in my longimanus.
they would vibrate the tail and if he/she is accepted then they can share the hide.

the longinanuses are also doing well and are eating again.
they seems to like temperature in the upper 30 degrees.

i would like to add that spinifers are way bigger then longimanus.
don;t know if they pinch harder then the longimanus.

will find out when i have the time.

eastwing' again i asked of you get an afs if you are interested in having a scorpion.
it will save a lot of your time and also who knows even your life.

the enlcosure is devoid of any decorations has a water dish and a food dish which has 1 or 2 mealworms inside.

they will go out when the room is dark and the conditions are right.

then they will go out. if it is not necessary then they will not venture out of the burrow or hide.

a good way to know if the scorpion has been walking around is to clean your water dish and inspect it the next day and see if there are any trace of substrate in them. if there are then it means the scorpions are walking about when we are sleeping or away.

k.fai not only mealworms but crickets also can. like me i can;t find crickets here so i feed them meal worms.

and sumtimes i will hunt for house lizards, i don't fee the whole lizard but just take the tail and i let go of the lizard so i can have a new tail when it regrows.

but don't use traps to get the lizards, u have to use the rubber band technique.

only true kampung folks know how to use that technique. just to stun the lizards and not kill it.

i thing that amuses me with scorpions when they are exploring the tanks is that they like to knock on the wall.

it is like they are trying to find a place where the wall is thinner so that they can punch a hole through it.

the desert hairy is also expensive.

the yellow fat tail is too dangerous.

the deathstalker is dangerous.

P. imperator is not that expensive but it is like getting a very big spinifer.

haih. difficult to make a choice.

and by the way does anybody have any information on who is selling live dubias.

when selecting a sp to buy we must consider a lot of factors.

any animal in fact. let it be a cat or a betta fish we must put a lot of thought into the purchase.

if you have seen natures destruction and the consequences from its destruction due to the greed and idiotic behavior of human Ryo, you will tremble in sadness and anger.

how many times have i been angry when i see stray cats and dogs die because of human pleasure. how many times have i witness forest being choped down and burn in the name of modernisation and profit.

i just really hope that people will take natures conservation seriously before it's too late.

get one of those things sold in any hardware. its like some type of chemical that attracts the ants to eat it and cover them self in it bring to their nest and kills the rest. Used that and so far so good. thanks a million to people in here.. (cant remember who proposed me to used it)

There is a very sad news to tell today.

My centruroides margaritatus died...

Every week, there is a woman come and clean up my house,my mom hired her.
Early in the morning i had to wake up and let her clean up my room, After i washed up my self i wanted to go out and have my breakfast, i go in my room to take my wallet.when the moment i near the door i heard the sound something dropped onto the floor and bounced and then drop agian.i rushed inside my room, i saw she was taking up the tube look container.my CM was inside! It fell down from a 160cm high cupbrd! I take it up and see.
1 of its claw had broken due to the collision, i not sure its bcoz of it collided with the soil or bark or the wall of the container. The cm look weak and finally it died at about 11.15...
Its my false to put it above the cupbrd but not inside the cupboard wif the other invert. Should i stop keeping the invert due to my carelessy?

weh. if you put ur aircond to 29 degrees better to turn it off la.

our room temperature in malaysia is rangin from 24-32 degrees. if you put 29 then better to turn it off.

if you are having the same problem as i am which my room don't have a fan just put your scorpions near a window so that the enclosures will warm up a little.

the aircond can be kept at 24-26 degrees. that will be ok.

my aircond is set at 22 degrees now but enclosure temperature are around 26-28 degrees.

get urself a bunch of thermometer to get a data sheet of your room temperature fluctuation.

U can try getting vaseline from pharmacy and apply a ring of it outside ur enclosure so the ants cant climb on it
Or u can use ant powder which is most effective imo

From wat i know, scorpions from temperate climates need to stimulate the season using the cooling period method which i included in page 1 but im not sure if we need it in our country cause i have not heard anyone using such method when breeding their scorp...

Lester.. u sure have alot of tennis size scorps...
and as for K.Fai... dont worry man.. i lost many scorp and the feelings are the same. But i hope u'll learn something trough this. i dont want to say bad things but act this as an experience.. am expensive one though. Dont rush things of getting a new scorp. only u are ready and have researched sufficiently then get it. I remember my 3rd scorp sp was a HH and was thrilled but died ofter 4 days. Molt problem. so be carefull next time and dont feel hard on it.

Added on July 12, 2009, 11:21 pmits not cheap to import scorps from overseas... make sure you have many people to join ur purchase unless ur damn rich then its ok. The cost of the scorps is one thing but the price of shipping is another. And make sure you purchase more than 1scorps coz of the shipping cost.. its not value for money if u only buy 1 scorp and what if it DOA on the way... u'll butn all ur money... my no cent...

from ur description i can tell its mites.
all u cn do is quaratine the scorp from all ur collection. scrape and burn the one u can and tomoror do the same with vaseline. and watch ur scorps behaviour.. and obviously update us. If any signs of weakening try to give food and water. if the mites still there u could try again or give it to some one who has the equipment to do such surgery.. mine was full of mites.. so ur not the only one. I know how u feel...

Arr... Pretty much confirm its mites now
Juz leave it in the container, u can add substrate but bone dry coco fiber with a water dish inside if im nt mistaken
When prolong usually the mites will dry of dehydration or drown in water dish

But i prefer another method which is scrap them away using vaseline and cotton bud

i'm sorry man. what i can see there is mites...
those pics to me confirm its mites.. coz i had the same prob. dont place ur scorp in an empty container place some thin layer of substrate on it. and leave it be. u either can scrape some off and burn them or leave till u get vaseline tomoz. oh if u decide to make some surgery on ur scorp, dont place it on the same container with the same subs. change to a new subs and clean ur container then place ur scorp in. dont panic... we cn help u on this issue.

Added on July 13, 2009, 2:00 amcrape them off with paper.. then afterwards burn the paper. i really hate those mites. if only we can find some springtails..
oh yeah water dish kinda a good idea. the scorp may notice the mites are on him, so they dunk them self in for hours to drown the mites... that could work.. or the opposite..

Swt surgery pulak, sound so serious tongue.gif
I suggest leave it now, if scrap later they get off on the substrate or floor or outside the tank susah a bit
Use vaseline can stick them on it easily and drown them
But be very careful not to apply on the booklung

u got it there mate.. because there is no suficient moisture in the tank... the mites attracted to the moving thing that has nutrients and moisture on it.. so they attached themself and multiplate... and eventually ur scorp dies... if not done anything..correct me if im wrong..

mites.

i wonder,

what are the factors that contributes to a mite infestation of the tank and scorpions?

this is the first time that i saw a clear picture of a mites infestation on a scorpion.

thank you hyorinmaru for the pictures.

all these while i was observing my scorpions to see if there is any abnormality on them.

Usually they comes along with wild caught stuff
If u dun have any wild caught scorp i think it shld be safe
They stick on ur scorp absorbing the water and nutrient from it
Eventually ur scorp will die from dehydration+lost of nutrient and perhaps stress

Its a wildcaught scorpion Hyourin. It comes preloaded with free parasites. Do what you can to save it. But don't stress yourself over it. The learning curve is by far more important.

P/s: Mites are overrated - only in Malaysian forums. The open wound that is the Fear of the unknown is often fueled with more than generous amounts salt, chilli and cuka. Sometimes to the point where the owner of the animal stresses the animal inside out just to remove things that are just superficial. You're dealing with living thing, not quantum physics.

take out the uneaten food. That should work... each time u gave food to ur scorp make sure u take out its waste and uneaten food. it prevent the ants from coming in. or u could use one of those ants powder sold in hardware shops.. works wonders for me..

Added on July 13, 2009, 2:40 pmor vaseline on the enclosure... around the top or bottom of the tank..

Hi. Nice to meet you all. I'll intro a bit about myself first, I am a reptile keeper but recently decided keep more than just that..
So I was choosing between either tarantulas or scorpions, =P, but in the end I ended up with a scorpion.

So I did my research and purchased a Urodacus Manicatus ( Black Rock Scorpion ), and I have had it for about 3 days.
Now he's got his own burrow and everything which is so cool tongue.gif

The only thing I noticed is that he hasnt eaten yet since he came, any tips on how to get his appetite going?
He/She ( dunno yet ), is about 2.5 cm long and is staying in a plastic container with about 6 cm of coco peat substrate.
Also, I did a false bottom setup.

About when do you think I should start feeding him and how often?
Thanks in advance. smile.gif

U r welcome,Farhadd.
@unfazedgamer- where the hell did you get the scorp... lucky you... about feeding its not really rocket science. u can feed it anytime as long as they want to eat. some of us like to feed our scorps regularly (untill they're the size of a tennis ball e.g Lester.. lol) and some feed their scorp every 2 weeks or so.. so its not wrong to not feed ur scorp as long as it eats.. for me i feed them once a week (coz got tons of crix) i never let them be too skinny..
@HyourinMaru - er.. its obvious the vaseline wil b full of subs coz its sticky what.. what i do is scrape the mites away then apply vaseline to the parts where i cant get them. After leaving for some time wipe it clean... carefull of its booklungs.. when u scrape them off make sure they are in the vaseline and stick to it..

I tot after apply vaselin then straight away put it into its tank is not ok tongue.gif
I apply more vaselin cos the mites is at the smaller area and later going to apply to its bottom part.
ANW...how to clean its anus part?I'm afraid dat vaselin may block the anus.
And the hardest part is the tergate which my scorp always move and those mites stay hidden.

I live in Australia currently and that's why I'm able to purchase that specific species. =P
If everything goes well with this one, might get a Urodacus Yaschenkoi.

But still taking care of this one for a bit first, btw, for a water bowl.. is it really necessary?

you can place the vaseline and place the scorp on the container but with nothing on it, if u are going to still do some surgery on it.. for the anus use a satay skewer but must be very gentle. for me i think paper is the best for the nut and cranies...

you are one lucky guy over there.. we dont have much species then Spinifers and Longimanus..
i think it is neccesary.. it does not need high humidity but it might want to drink alil.. just give it a bottle cap for storing water.. put it on the side..

Just out of curiosity, if I put the bottle cap onto the ground instead of embedding it into the ground,
will it still be able to climb and drink?

well it can climb but i think it should be embedded and place some small rocks in so it wont drown it self. its a semi desert species so it dont need much humidity. But i've read in a website, its a burrower so provide it some larger rocks so it can burrow under it for its hide. may i know what substrate ur using? and i hope ur scorp live well to adulthood.

As long as it's legal lol. Then sure man.
Pets here are relatively expensive, the craziest being fish...
One normal goldfish costs around 12 dollars =.=

I bought my U.Manicatus at 25 dollars.
U. Yaschenkoi and U. Elongatus more expensive.

i think for a scorpling at the size of 2cm at the price of 25dollars is rather expensive.. as they are common in australia.

congrats... and its not breed.. the mum gave birth.. breed is when they have some sexy time.. (u get what i mean)
as for the mum.. dont disturb her or else she will eat her youngs one by one.. so just leave her.. if u want to see her just see her at a distance..

But the price of feeders here are very expensive even though they come pre-gutloaded and stuff..

Those in my siggy is my top favourite, i do have other wishlist but they are easier to acquire so i din include in siggy
Regarding the stinnger nola, every scorp have only 1stinger with 1venom gland
If those are stinger mean the 2 tail segment got venom gland tongue.gif

Added on July 14, 2009, 1:54 amAlacran Tartarus remind me of Lychas Scutilus..
the Opistophthalmus karooensis is such a beauty...look at their colorization.. but if someone do have these i dont think they can live long in a lab or someones house.. i think it need more attention to humidity, temperature and bla bla bla...

Added on July 14, 2009, 1:56 amthe theory is that the male let them self be eaten to spread its genes and hoping that the female have stronger broods. Hoping that she rejects other males. well these applies to spiders but some say same with scorpions..

if she groomed her self dont worry.. she must have eaten them up...

*
Er i dun think male scorpion "let" themself to be eaten, they tried so hard to escape as soon as possible....

Found this in MES scorpions
QUOTE
On average, a little more than one scorpions out of three will not be likely to rocreate another time. We supposed that at certain species, the sacrifice of the male would be useful to nourish the female, which would cause to increase the number of young to be born.

I think its safe to assume the female eat the male in order to acquire more nutrient to prepare the developed of the young scorpling in the future

Still,i think i can feed her cos the place dat i applied vaseline hav a distance to where she always use to grab things. smile.gif

normally the spider eat up the male when mating is to make sure the process go longer

it show that reproducing the next generation is more important to their own life

furthermore the female spiders are now fulled and dont have to hunt before giving birth

I have noticed that if my substrate is 100% coco fibre.. it doesnt work very well for burrowing..
What is a substrate that is good for my scorpion to be able to burrow successfully?

Thanks..

U shld be able to get excavator sand at ur area
Or u can use exo terra sand, spray it and let it dry under the sun b4 using so the burrow wont collapse

It will be fine, dun attempt to help it unless u found them on substrate
U haven see scorp with over 80 babies, they cling on all the legs, under the mom, at the metasoma and they are all fine

my other gravid female from lester is acting really strange. she won;t eat, she keep sitting on top of the bark that is the entrance to her hide.

i wonder, is she going to pop soon?

my male spinifers have followed the longimanus attitude of hiding inside the burrows and dig as deep as they can.

aaaaah. while hyorinmaru is having problems with mites. i'm having problems with flies.

just checked on the female and saw 3 dead baby scorpions in the substrate. i guess she was moving around in the enclosure.

i notice the babies were moving so i presume that they were still alive. to my surprise it was the maggots that were moving.

how can the flies get into the enclosure when it is sealed and neted.

i'm thinking of getting a carnivorous plant to help me with the fly problem.

The one from Lisa rite?
I believe she said so because her specimen was found on the drier area but there are some that live in more humid environment, juz like the hottentotta hottentotta
Cause she know where her one from so she know the environment to stimulate in captively
Now wonder lester one from the drier part or the humid part hmm.gif

it is th esame maggots from before. the flies are very round in shape and have stripes on the body. really2 small flies. as usual just scoop all the effected substrate and out the windows all of them go.

the mother is still giving birth. has anyone notice a particular smell when a spnifer gives birth. it smells like amniotic fluid.

i can presume that as long i can still smell the smell or odour then she is still giving birth.

i can;t see her. she is well inside the hide. sumtimes i wonder if i have to change the hide design for me to see them more clearly.

since i can;t see her so i am presuming she is still giving birth. i cant't say for sure if she have stop giving birth nor can i say she is still birthing.

and hyorinmaru, this is the female that gave birth in the parcel.

Scorpion that have babies on their back are very defensive
Experienced it from my AFS and Hottentotta  cool.gif
Do tell me more bout ur research
Have u tried mixing both?
The one from Lisa rite?
I believe she said so because her specimen was found on the drier area but there are some that live in more humid environment, juz like the hottentotta hottentotta
Cause she know where her one from so she know the environment to stimulate in captively
Now wonder lester one from the drier part or the humid part  hmm.gif
Got ventilation hole= Scuttle flies can go in
Usually if i have dead 1st instar, i only see round mites eating them  sweat.gif

nothing. having 2 hetrometrus species i have concluded that they share almost the same habits.

if they have a chance they will burrow and stay in there until you are frustrated and dig them out to see them.

sometimes they will eat and eat and eat but other times they just don't even care if the meal worm is passing in front of them.

Added on July 16, 2009, 3:12 pmi just throw in a meal worm or two and let it be in the tank. the last time i checked 1 of the meal worm already turn into a pupea.

rain forest average temperature is about 22-36 degrees depending on your position from the equator.

with the global warming effect it could be more.

enclosure temperature for my afs are around 30 during the day and 22 during the night.

humidity is high at around 80-90%.

power feeding.

i'm trying to power feed my meal worms.

change the substrate from oats to a mixture of tiger susu biscuits and oats with a ratio of 70/30.

don;t know what will happen but the biscuit is really jam pack with vitamins.

how can i seperate already. the other one is in the stomach already.

i'm starting to see the logicalness in keeping medium and small size scorpions.

my table is full to the brim with scorpions already and i have to get ready to separate the new born spinifers when they reach 2 or 3instars.

then there is the other female also getting ready to pop. and that also a few more new scorpions will be born and have to be separated once they are ready.

if small scorpions then can easily keep in small containers. a lot of small containers is easier to handle then a few very big containers.

what if we feed the scorps to make them grow faster and stop powerfeed them when they reach a certail instar... will it b ok? i mean the life expectancy... as many would say power feed them will decrease their life expectancy...

i'm still thinking of either letting them be with the mother which i think is appropriate since nature already intended it that but that means i have to get a bigger enclosure.

i think when the time comes i will buy a nice 2'x4'( i hope it is the right symbol for feet) plastic enclosure and put them in there.

i wonder, are there any spinifers in borneo?

the up coming scorpling and the mother are already in a holding enclosures. the just born scorplings are also in a same size tank. which could fit 2 adults spinifers nicely.

so i think i can still relax abit. it is not the enclosure that is the problem. it is my room space. need to re arrange my room so that the scorpions enclosure get the morning sun rays to heat up the enclosures slightly.

cannot cheapo shelving.

just imagine how heavy a 3x1.5' tank made from plastic that can house 6 adult scorpions with 6 inches of potting soil+sawdust substrate.

time that weight by 4 and you can see the problem.

and that is my point. small containers are easier to arrange.
it also helps if you have small and medium size scorpions too.

ohh. my busines trip to kuching was cancelled.

so this saturday maybe i can see a friend who may have the answer to my problem.

custom made teak wood shelving unit.
