To the average person, scorpions appear to be bizarre, unusual, and downright frightening creatures.
However, beyond an almost alien and formidable appearance, there is a fascinating and impressive creature.

Scorpions are among the world's most misunderstood and feared creatures, and this fact is certainly one of the biggest
obstacles against gaining support to conserve these animals. Human fear of scorpions is mainly derived from that fact
that scorpions have the ability to inject toxic venom. However, scorpions are not as dangerous as many people believe.
Out of the 1,500 scorpion species found around the world, only around 25 species are equipped with a venom that is powerful
enough to be lethal to humans.

Scorpions have venom as a means to quickly kill or immobilize prey. Scorpions can and do control how much venom they inject
during a sting as the venom is crucial for subduing prey. If the scorpion depletes all of its venom it will take several days to
restock the supply. Due to these facts, scorpions may not want to waste their valuable venom during defensive stings.
Stings occur in which no venom is injected, these are known as 'dry stings.'

Scorpions are not malicious creatures that stalk out humans to sting. Scorpions are also not usually aggressive creatures,
but rather wary, timid, and retiring. Most people are stung by scorpions when they accidently step on them, stick their hands
or feet into places that act as shelter for scorpions (such as under rocks, under debris, etc.) or when someone intentionally handles them.
Taking precautions such as always wearing proper footwear outdoors and never sticking your hands or feet into places that
may act as potential hides will greatly reduce the chances of receiving a scorpion sting. Common sense and caution outdoors
with help alleviate confrontations between humans and wildlife.

Scorpions are brilliantly resourceful and resilient creatures. Their superb ability to adapt and survive has allowed them
to withstand over 430 million years on the earth.

Human actions, however, have begun to drastically change the environment. The natural world is being destroyed, altered,
and degraded at an alarming rate. Scorpions are not immune to this. The following outlines the many human-induced threats

Legions of scorpions die on the roads every year. When driving through roads that cut through scorpion habitat, slow down and
be watchful for any roadbound individuals.

If you see any products that contain dead scorpions in them (trinkets, scorpion vodka, etc) do not buy them. Even if you try to justify
that you did not kill the animal, you are supporting the demand and another scorpion will have to be killed to replace the purchased item.
Refusing to shop at stores that stock these items is also beneficial.

Do not use all-terrain or off-road vehicles to drive on sandunes or through fragile desert habitat. Although deserts seem like harsh and
rugged places, they are actually sensitive environments that can be easily damaged. Using such vehicles can degrade delicate scorpion
habitat.

Raising awareness about the issues that cause population declines in scorpions is important as these creatures are very beneficial.
Scorpions are extremely valuable components to natural Eco-systems, as they play complex roles of both predators and prey.
Scorpions also act as natural gauges for environmental degradation. When scorpions cease to turn up in habitats that should support
them, it is a strong indicator that the environment has been severely degraded. In this respect, scorpions act like 'the canary in the
coal mine' for certain natural habitats.

Scorpions are also valuable to medical research. The venoms of several different species are being looked at as they may be instrumental
in the creation of new antibiotics and various cancer treatments.

They prey upon a wide variety of animals and insects and all have the ability to sting. Even though a sting can hurt, very few scorpions are dangerous to humans. Keeping scorpions as pets is becoming increasingly more popular. They are relatively inexpensive to buy and require very little maintenance, much in the way of set up, or care. Scorpions can be easily found at pet shops, reptile shows and online dealers and breeders. If you are looking for an interesting and unique pet a scorpion makes an excellent choice. Before buying a Scorpion, it's important to know where they are origin from. Rainforest sp. like Heterometrus and Pandinus Sp. should be keep in humid environment to stimulate their natural habitat as much as possible. Others Desert Sp like Hadrurus Arizonensis do well in bone dry environment. Desert species are one of the best Arthropod species in conserving water. A waxy coating on their exoskeleton makes it impermeable to water (in both direction). Water intake of most desert Scorpions are acquired from their food so one should not be worry too much bout desert sp. being dehydrated. Bark scorpion on the other hand would need a vertical bark place in the enclosure as they like to spend most of their times hanging on the bark. Some species like the Rhopalurus Junceus even molt upside down on the bark, relying on the gravity force to molt successfully.

Feeding scorpions in captivity is simple. A healthy scorpion will eat almost anything small enough for it to grab. Gut loaded crickets and mealworms are an ideal source of food. Crickets and mealworms are readily available at pet stores and online and are inexpensive. Gut loading is the process of keeping the insects well fed so they pass along additional nutrients to your pet. You should feed your scorpion every few days to a week. If you have a communal tank make sure you provide enough prey for everyone to eat. If everyone is happy and well fed the chances of fighting or cannibalism is reduced.

The amount of food in the scorpion’s diet should be monitored to ensure a healthy pet. A healthy scorpion is not too skinny or overly fat. The age of the animal is also a factor in how much it will eat. Young scorpions will eat almost continuously, since they are growing rapidly. Sometimes a scorpion will refuse to eat for long periods of time. Do not be alarmed. Healthy adult males have been known to take long fasts lasting months.

A shallow, sturdy water dish should be provided. If you have a communal colony it is a good idea to provide more than one water dish. The dish should be no more than half an inch deep. Fresh water should be provided daily and the bowl cleaned regularly

Caution: Avoid feeding your scorpion with wild caught insect as they may carry insecticide/pesticide or germs that can be harmful to your scorpion

The best rule is to never handle you scorpion. Handling your scorpion is not recommended. There is a possibility of being stung or grabbed by the scorpions pincers. There is also a chance of losing, hurting or fatally injuring your pet scorpion. Scorpions can move quickly and will look for a dark place to hide. If it gets away it can run under furniture, air ducts, and other places where you may not be able to retrieve it. If a scorpion runs to the end of a table it won’t stop and will fall. A fall can easily injure or kill your pet.

If you need to rehouse a Scorpion you can try gently pushing them into a vial/cup by using a paintbrush before transferring them to their new container .

As scorpions grow their hard exoskeleton becomes too small for its body so they must grow a new one. The new outer skeleton forms beneath the current one. This process is called molting. It is a stressful process for the scorpion that can take up to twelve hours and requires a lot of energy.

Right before molting a scorpion will go into hiding for a few days and refuse food. Like a spider, a scorpion will shed its old skin leaving behind an exact replica of itself. The shed is translucent and can still fluoresce. The newly molted scorpion will be white and extremely soft bodied. When it is in this stage it is extremely vulnerable. If you have scorpions in a communal tank pay close attention to your newly molted scorpion so it is not injured.

A scorpion will molt an average of six times before reaching adulthood. After it reaches adulthood it will no longer molt. Depending on the species, a scorpion reaches adulthood between six months to seven years of age.

All scorpion species possess poison or venom. Scorpions use their venom to kill or paralyze their prey so that it can be eaten; in general it is fast-acting, allowing for effective prey capture. Scorpions are relatively timid creatures which are preyed on by a variety of larger predators, most of which can easily outmaneuver the scorpion and tear off its stinger. Some have even developed an evolved immunity to the venom so the scorpion can be devoured whole. Thus, when confronted by a larger creature, scorpions will generally run for the nearest cover.

As with any species taken from the wild, a captive breeding project should be undertaken to produce a viable healthy supply for the future. There is an important lesson to be learned from tarantulas keeper- captive breeding is a necessary part of advancing the hobby. Because Mexico has completely closed the exportation of animals, several species of indigenous tarantulas would not be available if a few visionary avocational keepers had not undertaken concerted captive breeding programs.

Upon the first few minutes the male are introduced in the female enclosure, the male begins to explore his new surroundings and sense the female's presence. Some (perhaps all) females emit sex pheromones (volatile chemical substance) that inform the male that she is nearby and receptive. He begins juddering, rapidly moving his legs and shaking his body, sending vibrations through the substrate.

The female recognizes his presence through these vibration and leaves her hiding place. She rushes at him in a mock attack; sometimes striking with her metasoma, the telson safely tucked under. They move apart, and a series of additional mock attacks are initiated. In some instances, the male stings an intersegmental membrane of the female's body, leaving the aculeus embedded for as long as 20minutes. If venom is injected, it likely anesthetizes and calms her, ppreventing normal aggressive, cannobalistic tendencies.

Facing each other, he grabs her pedipalps with his, and they dance about. This promenade à deux continues (usually lasting 5min- an hour) until the male, using his pectines, finds a suitable surface on which to place his spermatophore. Immediately the pair unclasps. The female remains over the spermatophore stalk for a few seconds, swaying back and forth. The fertilized eggs usually take between two to eight months to develop. In the African rock scorpions (Hadogenes troglodytes), the females may be pregnant for almost a year and a half before giving birth. In most scorpions, the young develop within special sacs within the mother’s reproductive tract, where special organs connect the developing young’s mouth directly to the mother’s digestive system, where they obtain nutrients and water. This arrangement is different from other live-bearing arthropods, which usually do not provide maternal nutrients to the young. Livebearers such as cockroaches are ovoviviparous, which means that the eggs are retained inside the body until they hatch, but the young are nourished solely by the egg yolks and do not obtain nutrition from the mother’s bloodstream. Scorpions, by contrast, are truly viviparous, a method of birth that is seen in the mammals but not in many other life forms. Some theory suggested, the more the mother scorpion eat at her early gestation, the more scorpling she will produce in the future

The newborn scorpions are known as "first instars". They are small, white and plump, looking something like a fat beetle grub with legs and a tail. They are completely helpless and cannot sting or feed themselves. They remain immobile, clinging to their mother's back until they undergo their first molt, about a week later, emerging as "second instars". At this point they are no longer white, and possess functional claws and stings. After reaching second instar stage, the babies become more active, and the mother will feed the young with bits of food she has caught. They will leave the female occasionally and wander off for short distances, always returning to her protection if threatened.

Parental care is very important for young scorpions. Youngsters that get separated from their mother when they are still in first instar stage are doomed to die from dehydration. Although other adult scorpions may occasionally capture and eat a youngster, this is rare in most species. However, it is always prudent to separate a pregnant scorpion and isolate it in its own cage to raise its young.

Some species from temperate climates will need about a month or 2 of cooler temps (around 50F) to stimulate a Winter cooling down period. After the cool period bring up the temps to 80-90F and slightly increase humidity. Humidity can raised by slightly misting enclosure. Be very very careful when doing this with the desert species. If it stays too damp for too long it can cause bacterial infections such as mycosis. The misting should be able to evaporate within a day.

Species from warm climates will not need a cooling period.

Be sure to use an enclosure that has adequate space for a pair of scorpions. An even larger area is needed for a communal set up which goes without saying. Also you must include a hard flat surface such as a rock, piece of wood etc.

One species of Devil Scorpion (T.Serrulatus) has no male; it reproduce by parthenogenesis. Parthenogenesis is an unusual form of reproduction where offspring are produced without the need for sperm to fertilize the egg. Some Asian population of a widely distributed scorpion. Liocheles Australasiae, have reproduced parthenogenically. Although common in insects, it is rare in arachnids. As more research is done and additional observations are made, it seems logical that other scorpion will be found to be reproducing by this asexual method

Sometimes the scorpion babies will drop off from the mother back and will most likely die of dehydration later on. The mycoses are fungal infections which benefit from a rate a little high signal of moisture to develop on the primarily desert scorpions. One often finds these mycoses on Hadrurus, Androctonus in the form of brownish or blackish spots, more or less small. They nothing but do increase with the wire of time, and are propagated quickly until the scorpion dies. These spots are easily visible on the yellow scorpions, but much less quickly detectable on scorpions to which the color is close to the black. These mycoses can be treated with market products in pharmacy and used for man, but in proportionings much weaker. One can also get, always in pharmacy, of the parahydroxybenzoate of methyl, diluted in alcohol, which one locally applies with a cotton stem. The simplest remedy is to give a good ventilation to the terrariums and to decrease vaporizations.

These attacks appear as spots, more or less regular, and of different colors from the white to the black. These spots become holes which bore the carapace of the scorpions and proliferates then in the organism of this one. Death occurs always afterwards of long month of waiting. They touch especially the scorpions living in wet medium, the specimens most often reached are Pandinus. They are the result of a proliferation of bacterium generally due to a bad hygiene of the terrarium. We indeed noted that the breeders giving of the mice (alive or defrosted) to their scorpions were reached of this case, and that the others never noted this problem. The mice are very seldom finished, also the time which the scorpion takes to eat this mouse benefits the bacteria to multiply above. No, this is not true. The largest scorpions of the world are usually quite harmless for humans and use their pincers as defense in stead for the stinger (and venom). Dangerous scorpions are usually less than 10 cm in length (with the exception of a couple of Parabuthus from Southern Africa, which grown more than 10 cm in length.

Scorpions are unusual long lived compared to other invertebrates. Most scorpions reach maturity in 1-3 years (some species take longer time), and live for 1-3 years as adults. This means that scorpions can live from 2-6 years, but there are few life span studies. Some species can undoubtly get older (like the slow growing Hadogenes. It is important to note that scorpion growth is dependent on several factors, like temperature, food access, reproduction (mated individuals tends to die younger than virgins), stress etc. Scorpions get older in captivity than in nature. Females live longer than males.

Scorpions come in many sizes. The longest scorpion is probably Hadogenes troglodytes from southern Africa, which can reach more than 21 cm in length. Long scorpions are also found in the genera Heteromtrus, Pandinus and Heteroscorpion. The rumour about an Asian Heterometrus measuring up to 30 cm is probably only a myth, as it has never been verified by reliable sources. The heaviest scorpion is probably Pandinus imperatur, which can weight more than 50 gram (adult females). The smallest scorpions are found in the genus Microtityus, which only reach 12 mm in adult lenght. There are also other small genera, some of them recently described because of they cryptic way of life. Most scorpions are 4-12 cm long. A couple of fossil scorpions, e.g., Brontoscorpio, may have been as much as 1 meter in length.

The best scorpion for a beginner is an Emperor Scorpion (Pandinus imperator) and Asian Forest Scorpion (Heterometrus Spinifer). These Scorpions are big and very docile, perfect for the beginner in the hobby.

The belief that scorpions commit suicide by stinging themselves to death when surrounded by fire or alcohol is untrue. The venom has no effect on the scorpion itself, nor on any member of the same species (unless the venom is injected directly into the scorpion's nerve ganglion—quite an unlikely event outside of the laboratory). The misconception may derive from the fact that scorpions are poikilotherms (cold-blooded): when exposed to intense heat their metabolic processes malfunction. This causes the scorpion to spasm wildly and this spasming may appear as if the scorpion is stinging itself. It is also untrue that alcohol will cause scorpions to sting themselves to death.

Just leave her alone until the process finish and maintain the humidity

Eventually after giving birth, usually the mom will consume 1 or 2 of the scorpling to recover her energy
While most people argue that we don't need to feed the mom after the process but i hand feed mine with a dead cricket directly in her pedipalp and I have none of my scorpling being consume by the mom
The next thing to do aftter feeding/seeing she eat her baby is to left her alone with the babies until they eventually molted in 1-2weeks time
Before the baby molt, they dun need to eat nor drink so don't worry

Do not remove the baby from the mom's back, they will die if they fall off from the mom's back
If you happened to see a scorpion on the substrate you can try dropping it back on the mom's back but if it doesn't work, you may want to try this:

How to see if the scorpling have molted or not?

Few days after the babies molted they will eventually begin to leave the mom back
You can now start separating the babies from the mom by scooping them up with a spoon into another container
House the babies in a container with damp Coco Fiber substrate and maintain the humidity
You can choose to house them individually or communally
Each way have its own pros and cons so its up to you to decide

No, their chelicarae are not developed yet in this stage so they can't eat
In this stage they don't need to drink or eat, they rely on the nutrient in their body until they molt

Few days after they molt to 2nd instar
Do not feed them straight away after they molt as they are very fragile in this stage,
they need time for their exoskeleton to harden up

You can start with beheaded mealworm, just behead it and throw into the container and leave it
If by the next day its still there then take it out and try again
Soon after few weeks they should have no problem with a live mealworm
Cricket drumstick are also another good alternative
