QUOTE(mystvearn @ Jul 16 2013, 08:18 PM) Top gear production cost is £1mil/episode. Not sure if this includes the star's fees. Production usually starts in spring for summer episodes and autumn for winter episodes. Or can I say it could be hard to find replacement that can work closely as those 3 musketeers.http://www.autoblog.com/2012/07/18/jeremy-...hest-paid-star/ Andy Wilman can afford to ask £1mil because what TG generates back is way more than that. After UK airing of new episode, the episode will go to BBC international channel and documentary channel like Dave/Disc Turbo. Aside from that, TG merchandise is a huge thing in UK. Just go to any big supermarket, (well aside from M&S). you can find TG related merchandise like cakes, colouring book, guides etc. Just put TG in amazon/ebay and lots of unrelated stuff come out. TG Magazine is not included in the £1mil budget. It generates its own income. TG Magazine employs different people. Whatever they do on TV, parts of it appear in the magazine. Even the magazine can afford to franchise itself out. You have TG Malaysia. You also have localised shows. TG USA, TG Aus, TG Korea. If TG not performing, BBC will nego lower fees for the stars. So far BBC keeps paying them whatever they wants which means that whatever TG generates for BBC far outweigh the cost One reason why you cannot find the exact details online is because to avoid public light on the stars and maybe anger at the BBC. BBC needs income, but also need to keep its crown jewel in TG. Aside from TG, the only other show which can sustain itself is Dr Who. Sherlock is great, but in order to maintain its appeal you cannot make 20 eps a season. I think when the current set of stars do retire, BBC will be in a headache to find people to replace them. It is about the stars as much is it about the cars. I only see one person from 5th Gear moving to TG. However Hammond is in that position and has about another 10+ years in him. |

QUOTE(mystvearn @ Jul 17 2013, 11:25 AM) Here is the secret to a successful cast on TV. But I just couldn't find the similar humours in other TG shows(US,Australia, etc). The hosts just plain boring or not into my likingYou must have these 3 types of characters. 1. Boss type - JC/Simon Cowel 2. Cheeky good looking type - RH/Paula Abdul 3. Lurus bendul/neutral type - JM/Randy Jackson As long as you have these 3 types of characters, usually the show is successful. If you don't like the judges/cast then those 3 types of characters are not fully into their role. You see this repeated in all other TG shows. All other reality shows. IMO, if one member gone, hard to replace one, need to replace 3. Because, say JC leave show. You cannot bring in new person then suddenly become boss. Fans will not like that-new member already become boss. Same way if JM goes, you cannot bring in new member. Then they say old cast bully new member. Also, you cannot expect new member to instantly gel with old member. Takes time. That odd 10 years is enough to give audience to know TG. TG replaced Jason Dawe very early on, which is fine since people don't know what is TG at that time. Here is an TG merchandise not related at all to cars. You will find this in UK quite common http://www.tesco.com/groceries/Product/Details/?id=262778716 TG UK, however makes it interesting and hence I following the show till now |

Just about when we discussing the same thing:
QUOTE Jeremy Clarkson has become one of the highest paid presenters in the history of the BBC after taking home more than $23 million (14 million pounds) for his work on Top Gear, accounts have shown. Clarkson was paid $13.8 million for his stake in a joint venture with BBC Worldwide which markets the Top Gear brand globally, on top of a nearly $8 million dividend payment. He was also paid $1.64 million for his salary as a presenter. His total pay eclipses Jonathan Ross's $9.86 million salary when he was at the corporation and Graham Norton's, which is thought to be around $7.4 million. Top Gear presenters Richard Hammond, Clarkson and James May. Top Gear presenters Richard Hammond, Clarkson and James May. Clarkson held a 30 per cent stake in Bedder 6, a joint commercial venture with BBC Worldwide, since 2007. Top Gear's executive producer, Andy Wilman, has a 20 per cent stake in the company. Advertisement A BBC Worldwide spokesman said that "no licence fee income" had been used to pay shareholders. He added: "In just five years the business grew its profits fivefold (and its revenue to $245 million), which would not have been possible without the involvement of the show's creative talent." The BBC's accounts, published Tuesday, showed that the corporation spent $329 million on paying presenters and "talent" last year, a slight fall on the previous year. The figures included 14 individuals who were paid between $822,000 and $8.2 million, although the BBC refused to provide narrower cost bands or publish details on who they were http://www.theage.com.au/entertainment/tv-...0717-2q3z9.html |
