I plan to buy thi amp

My worry are I don't understand the explaination below :

1) Unfortunately at this price, there are compromises. For one, the HDMI interface on this receiver serves as a switcher function only and does NOT support audio or OSD functionality. In actuality, you are better off using component video on this receiver if your sources are all limited to 480p and perhaps run the one source you have that is 1080p directly into your display via a separate HDMI input.

If you interested in 1080p upscaling and HDMI OSD support and audio processing, then this receiver is not for you. We’ll check out some of Pioneer's budget priced models with 1080p upscaling soon and let you know what we think.

It's that mean that if I have PS# or bluray player next time, I can't have surround just can get stereo only coz now I'm using HOme Theater pioner player non HDMI connection to TV and to make pic better I bought pioneer player with HDMI connection ( 410 ) BUT when just can get the stereo sound ONLY

PLS any opinion

It means

PS3 or BDP -----HDMI----->VSX818--------HDMI----->LCD for video
+
------OPTICAL-->VSX818---------->Speakers for 5.1 sound

you need 3 cables, 2 HDMI and 1 optical.

or

PS3 or BDP -----HDMI------------------------->LCD for video, mute the audio
+
------OPTICAL-->VSX818---------->Speakers for 5.1 sound

so you just need 2 cables.

But if it said the HDMI at VSX818 does not support audio then what is it for?

Only a few days ago (Offer ended at end of June) , Harvey Norman was selling the complete set (VSX-818 + the complete Pioneer Speakers (the 2 front Big Speakers (looks like wood) + the Center and 2 surrounds + Big Sub-woofer) for the price of only RM2,499/-.

Anyway Pioneer have already come out with the cheaper AVR VSX-519 which has the feature of HDMI Repeater, that means can have Lossless LPCM sound through HDMI (good for PS3). However it doesn't have the auto-Calibration MCACC feature.

The higher VSX-819 however has both the MCACC and also the TrueHD and DTS-MA decoders built-in (good for normal BD player but too bad PS3 can't bitstream HD audio).

If I remember correctly a repeater means the opposite, i.e the unit will not use audio via HDMI

It's normal in the entry level models (for all brands) will not take in audio via HDMI and you need an optical connection (i.e dd/dts only)

apparently the new one (VSX-819H) does. Product webpage says it has DTS HDMA and DD TrueHD decoders and the manual doesn't say you have to to connect the optical for audio.

I think it's stupid - not to mention confusing - to have HDMI without audio capability and they should abolish this practice from now on. Perhaps lower end receivers do not have the processing power to handle TrueHD/HDMA but they should still be able to get the DD/DTS core via HDMI

You are wrong. HDMI switching (pass-through) is the one that doesn't have audio, like the 818 model.

The 519 HDMI repeater can accept and play decoded Lossless LPCM HD audio, but the unit doesn't decode Bitstream Loslesss HD audio. So like I said this model should be good for the PS3.

Affordable also rclxms.gif

But... not future proof if PS3 break down few years later. However by that time prices would already have come down so can buy new AVR with built-in HD lossless decoder then.

I think the latest PS3 Slim can stream the HD Audio via HDMI.

Dig up 5 mths old thread , but stll a bit blur biggrin.gif

All above comments referring to old PS3 before New PS3 Slim was launched.

Anyway for your benefit the 3 diff Pioneer models are for diff purposes (still applies now to New PS3 slim) :-

1) 818 - Can't accept Lossless LPCM or Bitstream from PS3 (HDMI only acts as a switch) - Already Obselete
2) 519 - Can accept Lossless LPCM from PS3 but can't decode Lossless Bitstream (no HD decoders onboard)
3) 819 - Can accept both Lossless LPCM and Bitstream (Got True-HD and DTS-MA Decoders onboard)

Hope that helps smile.gif
