Hmmm, I think my battery is still depleting very fast even when I have 3G, push notification, fetch mail, location service, wi-fi all turned off. I'm trying to jailbreak my phone at the moment to turn off EDGE as well. I did a restore and started it as a new phone as well. Anything else that I could do?

I also got this app from the app store called "BatteryStatus". When I run the app when my phone is fully charged, it shows all the battery duration for different usage and this is the problem, my battery info is similiar to what apple stated on their site for iPhone 3G but not 3Gs. Why is this so? The battery status apps isn't reliable and or my battery itself is having problem?

what apps have you installed so far? I had this same problem too but ok already now

Delete that and see. I havent tested which app is causing the problem but I also have fring. Tomorrow Im going to install back one at a time. Mine was depleting like 10% every hour - scary
Remember to let us know the results.

Please read this about fring - http://www.fring.com/blog/?p=1299

After your restore to new phone you should have not install back all your apps. If not then how to confirm whether the problem is still there or not? Just not using Fring doesnt mean its not doing anything

I just confirmed mine is due to fring last night. This is what I did - I installed back fring before I went to bed and also charge up the phone. I did logon to fring and then go back to home screen. Notifications On.

This morning - cannot turn on iPhone. Now I am going to charge up again and turn off Notification

I tried deleting fring. No other messenger problem in my phone. So I guess my only solution now is wait for the patch from apple  unsure.gif

I like Fring so I tried it again. This time I disable Notifications first before installing Fring. Then I installed Fring and it gave me a message about Notification. I ignore that.

I signon to Fring. Ok can see my buddies. Then click Home button to exit. I got
WIFI=on
Notifications=off
3G=on
Push=on

So far so good, no drop in battery levels during standby mode.

My previous setting was the same but the only different was that Notification was turn on before I installed Fring, then after installation, I turn off Notifications - it didnt help

Hey all, I conducted an experiment and my iPhone 3Gs used up only 5% of its battery for about 9 hours of standby time! wooo! Well, the only steps I took before conducting the experiment was deleting a few apps. I deleted Fring as well as a few other free games (Sorry I couldn't remember the names) and it works. Sorry this may not be a very constructive reply or solution, but like what idoblu suggested, maybe delete fring? or other IM apps then have a test run to see if that would help for battery issues. You can reinstall them anytime right if you're an must-have IM user  biggrin.gif  Give it a shot!

glad to hear that it solved your battery problem. btw i installed back fring and confirmed this time no problems since yesterday. I had installed and uninstalled a few times with always the battery been drained. this time what i did was turn off notifications first then installed back fring. no battery draining problems after that - try and let me know if that fixes it.

btw i also have Yahoo Messenger installed

Does anyone know how I can disable the edge function totally? All my networks have been switched off I still find the E alphabet on the network bar.

follow Maverick's guide -
3. Phone Credit Flying Out The Window? Turn 'OFF' EDGE
Q: How to turn OFF EDGE?
A1: For non jailbreak iPhones, the easiest way to enable Celular Data Network Column is to use ipcc file @ http://forum.lowyat.net/topic/752226. If you cant see the ipcc file via iTunes, enabled Carrier Bundle Support in iTunes 8.2.
A2: For jailbroken iPhone users, you can download 'SBSettings' via Cydia to disable EDGE. You can also easily toggle On/Off for WiFi, SSH, 3G, etc. Take Note: *SBSettings has no icons. To launch SBSettings, slide your finger at the statusbar where your time/carrier is located. This will launch the program.

Even with SBSettings, EDGE is not completely disable. You need to access the Cellular Data Network column. If you dont see the Cellular Data Network, use the ipcc file from http://forum.lowyat.net/topic/752226 to enable it. If you can't see the ipcc file via iTunes, enabled Carrier Bundle Support in iTunes 8.2.

To disable EDGE, place gibberish words to completely disable EDGE connection like below:
APN: iPhone
Username: iPhone
Password: iPhone

the original setting is -
APN: unet
Username: maxis
Password: wap

I recommend just change by adding a single character to it that way there is no need to remember what was the original setting when you need it. You just need to remove the extra character - like this:

APN: unet9
Username: maxis
Password: wap

When "9" is the extra character - just remove the "9" when you want to use data

Has anyone manage to get their 3gs repaired or replaced by maxis?
My set is draining battery at 3% to 4% every 5mins.
I already restored as new phone. After restoring to new it became worse. Turned off push, Bluetooth. I have wifi and 3g on only. Previously not so bad but now getting worse and worse.

guys, the main problem with battery draining are the apps. some apps will cause that to happen. sometimes reinstalling the apps can help. sometimes you need to delete the app. sometimes its the setting for the app.

best is dont install a bunch of apps but one at a time, to see if it causes any abnormal problem.

no need to turn off 3G, WiFi, etc la, if you turn everything off, then better turn off the phone. But I do off Locations as I dont need it and also I turn off Ask to Join Wifi Networks, and also Notifications as I dont need these.

If you are already suffering from battery drain, all you need to do is Restore as a New Phone using iTunes. Then try that and see if your battery last longer. Then slowly add back the apps maybe one at a time or a few.

You should backup your contacts, calendar, notes etc first using something like Microsoft Outlook or maybe your Windows Address Book.

Photos can be easily backup, just copy the folder onto your PC

The rest of the stuff will be backup by iTunes itself but remember to uncheck the box to sync all the apps. We want to sync one or a few at a time to troubleshoot which app is giving the problem.

One more thing, if your phone is sitting idle doing nothing (especially overnite while you sleep) it should drop no more than 2% for a 7-8 hour period. If more than that, something is eating your battery charges sweat.gif
