Does anyone know how I can disable the edge function totally? All my networks have been switched off I still find the E alphabet on the network bar.

follow Maverick's guide -
3. Phone Credit Flying Out The Window? Turn 'OFF' EDGE
Q: How to turn OFF EDGE?
A1: For non jailbreak iPhones, the easiest way to enable Celular Data Network Column is to use ipcc file @ http://forum.lowyat.net/topic/752226. If you cant see the ipcc file via iTunes, enabled Carrier Bundle Support in iTunes 8.2.
A2: For jailbroken iPhone users, you can download 'SBSettings' via Cydia to disable EDGE. You can also easily toggle On/Off for WiFi, SSH, 3G, etc. Take Note: *SBSettings has no icons. To launch SBSettings, slide your finger at the statusbar where your time/carrier is located. This will launch the program.

Even with SBSettings, EDGE is not completely disable. You need to access the Cellular Data Network column. If you dont see the Cellular Data Network, use the ipcc file from http://forum.lowyat.net/topic/752226 to enable it. If you can't see the ipcc file via iTunes, enabled Carrier Bundle Support in iTunes 8.2.

To disable EDGE, place gibberish words to completely disable EDGE connection like below:
APN: iPhone
Username: iPhone
Password: iPhone

the original setting is -
APN: unet
Username: maxis
Password: wap

I recommend just change by adding a single character to it that way there is no need to remember what was the original setting when you need it. You just need to remove the extra character - like this:

APN: unet9
Username: maxis
Password: wap

When "9" is the extra character - just remove the "9" when you want to use data

That was quite bad ... When they launched the 3GS promoting the better battery life i expect it to be better then the Iphone 2G.. my previous Iphone 2G battery can last me 4 days standby with mild usage ...

But then again, 2G does not have the features and functions of the 3GS. So, 'poorer' battery life is to be expected.

browse from ur iphone this site and install it(there will be a button disable edge&3g) http://iphonenodata.com/ ...surelly it will disable edge and 3g....working for me....save my 3gs battery and never have a huge payment for my postpaid again.

the E only indicates there was Edge in that area....dun worry. it wont drain

My battery drains 1% every 2-3 minutes non-idling.

No app opened. No wifi. No 3G. No music. Nothing. Brightness and volumn on default settings.

Certainly need a replacement for it.

Can anyone confirm with me whether turning ON the alarm would drain battery faster?? Cause normally throughout my whole sleep, the battery would drain ~1-2% only... But if I use a Wakeup alarm.. The battery would drain ~3-4%...

Oh yea and another thing... I've been diff things about Auto brightness ON n OFF to save battery... I think having it ON saves more battery.... What do other ppl think??

i think apple is upgrading their FW regarding battery drain. Maybe they will release it in FW 3.1....FW3.0.1 show nothing much in battery improvement....may be a bit kot...still my i3gs can stand one to two days till full drain. but drain faster than my i3g

There's no battery improvement at all in OS 3.0.1. It just fixed the sms vulnerabilty. The coming update, which is the 3.1 has battery improvements.

With all this discussion on battery drainage, wasn't iphone 3gs was suppose to solve all battery problems? Even the sales tag is "better battery lifetime".

No offense, I just think most of you guys didn't disable the push notification.

Gyver, I think we know how to turn off the push function. But seriously, this has got to be a firmware problem. Most of the phones were fine before the update.

Whats the point of buying a smartphone if we have to turn off all the services? All the suggestions only point to turning this off, turning that off which really defeats the purpose. I don't know how you guys can accept buying a phone that markets itself as a do-it-everything phone which after you purchase, you are suggested not to use any of that. Maybe we shouldn't even turn on the phone, just let it sit in our pockets to look pretty.

I had a iPhone 3G and had most services turned on, the phone could at least last me for a day. Ever since I got the 3GS, the battery has been horrible. Even with everything turned off, the phone is depleting 1% every minute, for just sitting there with the screen locked.

I've restored the phone, redownload the firmware and reinstalling, create a new profile for the phone and nothing worked. It must be the 3.0.1 firmware.
