yeah.. i admit that it has small keypad...
the other alternatives is Nokia N79
the price is about the same with N82

the specs also almost same but :-
N79
- is using Symbian OS 9.3 with S60 3.2 UI[S60V3FP2]
- has XpressOnCovers[can change back cover,everytime you change the back cover.. the theme will changed too..]
- has nice interface[new Feature pack]
- 5MP camera , with autofocus , LED flash 2nd generation
- has FM transmitter

so when comparing N79 and N82..
- N79 better in video recording[at night[with LED flash helps] and day too]
- N79 has nicer interface[i mean the UI]
- N79 has XpressOnCovers,nice
- N79 has FM transmitter[can hear mp3 at radio,just transmit it from hp]
- N82 better in taKing photos[because of Xenon Flash too]

actually i'm not sure what are your requirements in phone..

basically you say you want phone that has gps and nice UI.

definitely for me nokia smartphone[with symbian OS] is better

so
i recommend you to go for N79 or N85

K800 is good , but you can try newer phone such as K810
other phone such as C702/C510 is about RM 600++

Nokia N82 .. is the best phone for you if you are looking for best camera,..
while go for N85/N79 if you consider stylish phone and new Feature Pack[newer interface]

to be honest, backup is a good idea,
I have transfererred messages, contacts and all datas.. From a K320i to C901,
Amazingly all messages date are still intact.. (same time, same day as originals)

because even if you transfer messages to memory card,
after fw update, the phone will not be able to read..

the only solution is to backup to computer using that software and restore it back to phone after fw updates

just disable the a-gps and use only integrated gps to navigating free,,
