Female hedgehog hissed and clicked at me today when I went near her cage. She's NEVER hissed or clicked at me before.

I've isolated her in a really quiet spot in the house to get her comfortable with her new environment even though she's just about 12 days into her pregnancy.

It could be a false alarm but all the signs seem to be there.

Smelly urine, change in temperament, weight gain, increased appetite.

i wish i could help but i am not a vet. If i were u, i will stop feeding mealworms and only feed RC36. Last time i bought many mealworms and keep it in container for my fishes, some of my fishes died. After that i stop giving mealworms. Even now i am still scared to give to my hedgie. I bought mealworms and freeze it in freezer.

That looks like a lot of vomit.

My male hedgie vomited before (once or two only) and it was probably because he ate and drank too fast.

If the vomiting recurs, definitely needs vet attention. smile.gif

Hi, fellow hedgehog owners.

I have a female hedgehog, aged around a year or more. Her name is Gypsy. My housemate is considering buying a male hedgehog, maybe I can tell her to get one around Gypsy's age. I'm just wondering if we could put the two hedgehogs together? We're prepared to face the hardships of breeding and caring for the hoglets, but do we need two cages? One for females and one for males?

Please help me with suggestions.

Possibility of breeding is 100% if you decided to house them together.
I'm not sure about housing it together right after both hedgies were mated, but from what the other forummers did, they separated the male & female after assured that both were successfully copulated. Because the pregnant female tend to be very grumpy & it's their nature too being territorial & solitary

If you've prepared enough the knowledge of breeding them, I wish you all the best in producing the prickly fella icon_rolleyes.gif

Like Salt&Pepper mentioned, they will definitely mate if you put them together.
My male hedgehog sneaked into my female hedgie's cage one night and now the female hedgie is pregnant, which is something I didn't want to happen.
It's a taxing issue because you're going to be worrying about the mother's health and the babies' survival after birth.

I suggest that you Google on breeding hedgehogs as you can obtain a lot of useful information about breeding and the dangers involved. smile.gif

Yes, you need two cages because hedgehogs are solitary animals. They do not get lonely.
One important rule is to remove the male after breeding because the parents will eat the babies if the male is around after the birth.

Thanks! FYI, Papoy & Noodles are siblings blush.gif
Guess that you know where they inherit the cuteness rclxm9.gif
He used to bite me around 4 times. But now he never bite me. He learned that whenever he bite my hand, I used to act crying painfully. The last time he bite me when he thought that my hand was mealies. It's my fault because I didn't feed him earlier before goin to work, end up he gobbled up the mealies & accidentally bite my hand.

Shiny quills, after the final rinse with drops of baby oil.

I noticed that he lost quit many quills recently. I checked the quills & no sign of mites as the white ball remain intact at the end of it., but he has quite a flaky skin, so I decided to bath him with drops of oil. After I bath him yesterday, I found that no dropped quills at all inside his box.  icon_rolleyes.gif
Home sweet home. Welcome to my crib!
