nothin wrong with asus lar ...heats? think most laptop r the same though =.=,(used a few brands) but asus for me, sorta does not need a cooling pad...thats wat i think lar >_<..using X59GL :3

I was facing the same problem as yours, but at the end I choose to purchase a pricier U80V mainly due to its weight (2.15kg), longer battery life (up to 6 hours), backlit keyboard (including touchpad)and cool design (some people don't like glossy finish). All other aspects are the same. It all depends on your needs. For me, my main criteria is mobility, so I dont mind to sacrifice another RM400. Based on my needs, I would formulate it like this:

F81SE+ RM400 = U80V
            RM400 = lighter + long battery life +backlit keyboard +cool design

So, it depends whether your needs require you to have these extra features or not.

The ambient light sensor in U80V is so awesome! I just learned to turn it on by pressing FN+A key.

My room is very dim, so i have set my screen brightness to minimum (by FN+F5) and had the keyboard backlit set to Off (by FN+F3).

When the Sensor is ON, nothing happen to the Screen Brightness, only the keyboard backlit Auto Turn ON to mid level brightness.

Then I switched on my torchlight and pointed it right on top the sensor, the Keyboard Backliit AUTO OFF and the screen gradually grows brighter til maximum, the Touch pad horizontal dotted line also grows much brighter when touched.

In Room temp 26 degree celcius, the U80V has been up and running with light applications such as Firefox, winamp, thunder for 4 hours plus, the heat on the palm rest n keyboard area is almost non-exists. This machine runs very COOL and Quiet. I also touched the left airvent, the warm air that flowing out of it just felt a little bit warm and the air volume felt is just a minimal, very different from another notebook here i.e. the air is actually HOT and stronger flow/higher air volume.

Just a simple description on the User Interface aspects above. Hope it will be of a little help for those who's considering this model.

Overall, I rated this model: Highly Recommended.

The second review above, the chassis was divided into 6 area where infra red heat detection device was used to measure heat level.

Under Battery Saving Mode in Asus Power4Gear interface with LCD brightness set to minimum and the rest all in default settings in the Battery Saving mode i.e.

- Power Saving Desktop eg. wallpaper auto set to a White background with Asus logo in the middle of it
- Windows Aero theme disabled n reset to Vista Basic theme
- Windows Sidebar auto disabled
- Windows Taskbar auto set to Autohide mode
- WIFI adapter, PCI Express set to Maximum power saving mode
- Minimum CPU stage set to 5 %
- Maximum CPU stage set to 60 %
- ATI PowerPlay set to Maximum power saving

I have tried websurfing thru wifi connection without the keyboard backlit, the battery lasted for approximately 5 hours 30min with room temperature of 27 degree celcius. During the period, i was only running Firefox 3.52 with no other applications.
