it would appear that this year, having a 4.0 means little, judging from the number of people who got no offers.......i wonder how many matrik students they gave 4.0 this year........last years was 1100 or so......likely lots more, considering they did NOT announce the matrik results details at all this year.......

in common, i believe... hmm.gif

have u tried any other place? the truth is, new institutes/ipts/ipts are mushrooming all over malaysia now & this has given me an impression that the more the numbers, the lower their quality will be... banyak sangat, like everybody is racing to open up a sekolah...

any other place you have in mind?

AIMST is an established university and has rather cheap course, i think around RM 210k if i'm not mistaken.. U can choose that if u want to continue studying in Malaysia..

PIDC is another good place to study, u do a twinning program with Vinayaka Missions University in Salem, India.. I got a friend there right now, freshman and he say it's very nice, just that it's like in a desert or something.. And if I'm not mistaken it's about the same price as AIMST, or that's what he tells me..

However, it's rather surprising that you, a 4 flat matriculation student can't even get your choice of course.. And matriculation is suppose to guarantee your place in local university.. Guess it means a course but not the course u want..

come lah to aimst...i assure you, you will not regret this choice. the dental faculty is managed by the founders/management team from Hong Kong University (Dental Faculty). teaching staff come mostly from the UK & India.

try googling for some of our staff members like Prof FC Smales, Prof Margaret Comfort among the few.

as for loans to mahsa, only bank loans i know of.

Living expenses. Let's talk about degree cost, first year (since it's compulsory to live in the hostel). Hostel fees, will come to about RM450x6 per semester. Includes food and laundry. Cost-wise, it's good. But you might get sick of eating their food after some time.

As for me, I live outside. I'm surviving on about RM600 including room rental, bills, internet, petrol.

This will be slightly harsh, but i feel it's stupid to think like that. Let me ask you a question, do you think a school with funny lecturers and students that do "stupid stuffs" will make good graduates? Be realistic dude, you won't be even thinking of studying at the point. Face the truth.

Of course, it has to couple up with your own initiatives as well. If you're lazy, you're not meant to be in the medicine school at the first place. And you will not qualified for a good institution too. But a good student, if you've entered such a bad institution, it'll ruin your future dude.

So how could you say the quality of institution is not important?

well, that guy was goin there for dentistry, not medicine. so really, dun compare (no offence).... well, if a school/institute is recognised, why not... i still think that... the student itself must be hardworking, maybe u're right and i'm wrong. or maybe if i offended u in anyway, i'm sorry. But i think if a student is hardworking, he or she will flourish/successful/graduate as well ....

Peace~

Now, tell me. What is the difference between medicine and dentistry? Besides the scope of job? Curriculum and entry wise, it is equally tough. I wonder, are you in any of the dental school currently?

A hardworking student, MIGHT make a good student. I've seen many really hardworking student failling proffesional exams. Therefore, i think your study methods/lecturer's guidance plays a crucial role as well.

You did not offend me, but i'm just telling you what is happening in most medical/dental schools currently. Many students entered with burning passion at first, but trust me if the faculty is like what you said "funny" and "stupid", they'll all eventually lost interest. It's just the matter of time. No matter how good the student is.

using my brother's account because i don't have my own..I'm a proud BDS Malaya graduate and currently working in Sabah..sorry to hear u didn't get any place in local U even though u scored 4flat!

talking about my experience...5 years in UM dental school was the toughest time in my life..we were taught basic medicine and surgery relevant to dentistry..and then there's dental subjects where u need to learn and apply/practice on real life people!it was tough but looking back at those years it's worth it!

since I'm studying locally scholarship/loan was not a problem..if it means to pay rm200k+ for a dental degree it's worth it!get your degree, serve government for minimum 3years and open your own private practice then..give your patient the treatment and respect they deserve and you are on your way to become millionaire..i used to do locum in kota damansara with rm100k+ monthly profit!

we are still lacking great numbers of dentist in Malaysia..where i work now there's only 5 officers serving 180k+ population..it's not just about the money in this field of work..it's for me the satisfaction of doing what i like which is to see the world with more smiles biggrin.gif

Yea. Dental surgery indeed promises a good future. But I heard tat after the five years of degree, you still nid to struggle for another 15 years+ b4 everything goes smooth n steady.

wow there's a thread about Mahsa Dentistry here in EE. blink.gif must be hanging around /k/ to often to check here.
anyway ill try answer a few questions here...although some may be like 2-3 months old dy.

QUOTE(zeero @ Jun 26 2009, 10:31 AM)
seriously, i heard mahsa students suck big time... heard stories from my younger sister in sjmc that mahsa students did funny & very tak logic things when handling patients... like nobody ever taught them logic...  tongue.gif

are u joining?
*
might be true for other batches but might just be rumors. i heard a few cases where nursing students failed to take blood, did some stupid things and stuff during. but as for dentistry, i guess there's nothing to the extreme or odd. the first batch are yet to start their clinical practice...so no patient handling yet.

QUOTE(flo30rence @ Jun 26 2009, 11:09 PM)
erm.. as i know, dentistry course student will study in the campus near by um not damansara campus
they do provide hostel.but i think that is optional.
other detail.. i think i need to check it
*
classes are at both campus but the dental simulation lab is at damansara. hostel provided...optional.

QUOTE(alwayshappie @ Jul 11 2009, 05:38 PM)
looks like AIMST is really popular... hmm...
yea, any senior from MAHSA dentistry?
i also wanna know more about this programme, thanks smile.gif
the total fee is RM260K? heard that their MBBS costs the same too, is it?
and how long has MAHSA runs dentistry programme?
*
hi...im a senior from Mahsa dentistry. first batch. so far 2 batches only, the 3rd batch entering this september.
total fee at the moment is still 260k. MBBS program no idea. supposed to be launched already but intakes not in yet.

QUOTE(limeuu @ Jul 18 2009, 06:34 PM)
the naming of the degree matters not........it's the recognition of the same that is crucial........
*
i second that.

QUOTE(alwayshappie @ Jul 20 2009, 04:33 PM)
huh? MAHSA is no longer under trisakti anymore? may i know where u get this info? thanks =)
*
yeah...no longer under trisakti. fully under mahsa. even for the 1st and 2nd batch.

hey...i think it was my blog you found out. haha. at the moment, its 260k. the 350k is from the guidebook which was not made official yet as of August 2009. so coming intakes this September, the fee should be 260k.

hey guys , i got my offer letter from mahsa for this sept intake.

I spoke with one of the senior Lecturer there and he told me this , which is very shocking.

Not one ( NOT EVEN ONE ) , (maybe UM and USM got la) .. dentistry faculty in malaysia is recognised yet. Not even aimst , IMU , PIDC and MAHSA.

I considered IMU and AIMST for quite some time ..

IMU= good campus, new facilities, nice place to study BUT fees freaking expensive. overpriced

AIMST= Good campus, good facilities, good lecturers, from what i heard.. but they cannot accept me because it's full ..

and i heard most of the foundation students also come to mahsa to study dentistry.

so i decided to go to mahsa.. it's relatively cheap.. although dun have campus environment.. but i heard the dean has connection , which means can get the recognition faster then other UNI.

I spoke to one of the seniors there ( a girl) .she said although it seems tough to study in that environment. You will eventually get used to it and enjoy the course.

So people, everything taken in account here . I hope I didnt make the wrong choice to study in MAHSA.

If u check list from MDC, the only recongnised dentist courses are from public u(USM UKM UM), as for private institute, all are new >.<. But then when u ask dean or lecturer in private institute, they say should not be a problem, as long as their students perform in their intern. So best of luck!

it's a new course, so is not YET recognised by mdc........the recognition process takes place usually when the first batch is in the final year.......

and don't worry, no msia medical or dental qualification is not recognised, no matter how lousy it is........they will bend/change the rules to recognise.......they did this before........

she's not that sure cz she teaches physics students only..she's still new there actually..

this is just my opinion, if u wanna take courses like medical lab or nursing, u really need to find a college which emphasizes on a lot of practical thingy.
learning theories alone is not enough. based on what i heard, mahsa's and masterskills' nursing students got problems when going for their practicum. it's because they are lack of practice. compared to students under gov funded institution.

but again, this is just what i heard.. smile.gif

This is a repost of what my friend blogged about taking dentistry in Mahsa. Not to flame, cause any hate or purposely badmouth the university, but this is the sad truth. Forget about what those course promoters/receptionist/adverts tell u, this is the real thing happening. How true is this? Well I'm dental student there myself. tongue.gif

i guess i've never talked about my course seriously before. so this is it. anyone who's interested in taking dentistry in mahsa university college.. this is what you'll have to consider before u decide.

1. you'll have to be ready for last minute changes. EVERYTHING is last minute.

2. you'll have to be able to take up the stress of failing. over and over again.

3. you'll need to be strong enough to withstand shoutings and feeling stupid all the time. not that i've encountered so, but i've heard them. from the seniors..=)

4. will you have a life? for the first year, yes. but as it goes on... it'll dissapear.

5. ready to pay "saman" if you're gonna have a car. for there will be no legal parking space. NONE.

6. if you're gonna take the bus transport provided. good luck~

7. those who plans to stay in the hostel. this is the best part. you must be a person who loves cockroaches to love that place.

8. food's the most important thing? its fine. but for five years? have fun..

9. be ready to give up on all you're clothes. and buy only formal clothes. oh wait, let me be a little specific on this. the mahsa dental faculty definition of formal is, no sleeveless, no cleavage, no dresses, not even formal dresses, not even below the knees skirts, no open toe shoes, no flowered closed shoes, no high heels, no whatsoever hairstyle for the guys, and of course, best is.. you wear a baju kurung.

10. if you're not good at tolerating stupid behaviours. trust me, you'll have to. cause you'll be classmates for five years. and everyone will need any help that you can get. so best is. no enemies. and that's the most f***ed up part. however much you hate the person. you'll have to smile at him/her (her in my case) everyday in class........@.@

11. if you're ready to see lecturers going against each other. lecturers being bias. no ideal system. where the highest authority on the faculty doesn't give a sh*t about the students. if you enjoy the laziness of the faculty staff, how retardedly retarded they are. stupidness of the lab assistant. then yes, mahsa's the best choice.

the above are all facts. note that, THEY ARE ALL REAL TRUE FACTS OF MAHSA.

but you'll get through them. nothing biggy. cause at the end of the day, you'll have you're friends to complain to. you classmates to share you're burden. laugh about it. get angry about it. and cry about it. there's also a handful of awesome lecturers to make life there less sucky. so don't worry. you'll live.

And yes...I've lived through it.

Heyya, I understand your fear as I was in your position 3 years ago.

I'm currently a dental student in MAHSA. In my 3rd year. All I can say is that I don't think I have any regrets joining MAHSA. We just had our first batch of graduates. Most of them are already attached to different hospitals. Some in Hospital Kuala Lumpur and some all over Malaysia as housemans and dental officers.

The lectures are pretty good compared to some other unis because as our lecturers scolds us all the time 'YOU STUDENTS ARE SO PAMPERED, HERE WE MUST GIVE YOU POWERPOINT SLIDES FOR EVERYTHING'... So most of the time we will get lecture notes.

I heard from a classmate of mine who used to be in IMU, at IMU they just talk, leave the classroom, and your textbook is your companion.

AND OUR FACILITIES ARE PRETTY DAMN GOOD. Haha, after visiting the dental campus in Pusat Bandar Damansara (we have 2 campus, the dental students have a campus of their own)... I have to admit, the facilities are what made me join.

We have 250 students (each intake is 50 students maximum) and so we have nearly 200 dental clinics, meaning one dental chair for every student after year 2 studies. Because we get to treat patients after we finish year 2. So we get the best facilities.

Haha I RECOMMEND YOU VISIT MAHSA DENTAL CAMPUS to help make up your mind. See for yourself and you can ask the admin people to let you speak to a student then we can really tell you how we feel.

Also, I need to remind you that MAHSA dentistry usually have very full intakes, so I recommend you inquire early and check it out.

And also, we are already accredited by the Malaysian Dental Council (this is the MQA site for accredidation and all of MAHSA's course! CHECK IT OUT!):
http://203.106.19.130/mqr/english/eakrKPLi...m?IDAkrIPTS=236

As you can see, it's stated there we have fulfilled MDC's requirements.

Anyways according to the minsitry of health, they are going to stop private insitutions from opening new dental courses because there are too many dental graduates now. And also, we are the first few college to produce dental graduates with our first batch graduating last year.

I hope this helps clear some doubts.

But I always recommend going to visit all the other universities you are interested in ie. AIMST, Segi, etc. AND COME VISIT MAHSA!

And yes, I have to admit we have heard complains about our nursing students when they go to hospitals for their placements.... But so far, even hospitals have complimented the dental students to be better than some of the new medical doctors. HAHAS I don't mean to be proud, but MAHSA's dental students kick ass. We are also the course in MAHSA to have the prettiest girls wink.gif But our nursing students memang hopeless. So tell whoever's sister that MAHSA dental students are some of the best, just other people from different courses memang hopeless -.- I heard the nurses even cried in front of patients cause they don't know what to do. BUT DENTISTRY STUDENTS ARE NOT LIKE THAT. Because our dental faculty is very strict. If we screw up, we have to face consequences.

But did you know our Pharmacy course is an external (2+2) UK Nottingham course and Physiotherapy is from Northumbria? Meaning if you graduate, you get their degree and you degree is therefore more recognised??

So if I were you, I would also consider Pharmacy, then I get to school in the UK for the same price also HAHA.

Anyways, hope this clear some doubts.

Don't worry, I don't work for MAHSA or help promote them. I just wanna clear the name of MAHSA's dental students from all the horrible rumours. School pride! smile.gif

Our entry requirements have been increased because of more students applying... So be sure to check that out too.

But like I said, go check out other schools because that will help yourself decide better.

Good luck with your future!

PS: Like the guy mentioned above, there will be a lot of things to complain about in MAHSA ie. no parking at the medical campus, no good food, last minute changes. BUT BUT BUT you'll meet amazing classmates (LIKE US) and our lecturers SAYANG us a lot hahahas cause the dental school is a very close group. So our lecturers really care for us (like in highschool) and it is very personal smile.gif

So you will complain, you might suffer, but when you go through it, you'll go through it with friends and awesome lecturers. And when you graduate and get a good job, you'll just laugh at all the sufferings and remember the good times smile.gif

there's no housemanship for dental officers. i'm surprised you as a dental student got confused with this

in other words your lecturers are bad because they go ahead and spoonfeed you with lecture notes?

this is all political. don't ever take MQA's accreditation as a sign of quality.

Instead of telling us to go to such a jammed place to see what your facility is like, perhaps you can share it with us through pictures or proper descriptions.

Their new campus at Saujana Putra is very impressive. A 9 storey block dedicated for dentistry faculty with close to 500 dentist chairs. The dentistry students will all be transferred over here. Hope those from MAHSA can confirm this.
